Mokara orchids are hybrid plants, produced by crossing three genera called Vanda, Ascocentrum and Arachnis. They have a growth habit and cultural needs virtually identical to Vanda orchids and belong to a large group of orchids called the Vanda Alliance.
The Orchidaceae are a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants, with blooms that are often colourful and fragrant, commonly known as the orchid family. Along with the Asteraceae, they are one of the two largest families of flowering plants. The Orchidaceae have about 28,000 currently accepted species, distributed in about 763 genera. The determination of which family is larger is still under debate, because verified data on the members of such enormous families are continually in flux. Regardless, the number of orchid species is nearly equal to the number of bony fishes, more than twice the number of bird species, and about four times the number of mammal species. The family encompasses about 6–11% of all seed plants. The largest genera are Bulbophyllum (2,000 species), Epidendrum (1,500 species), Dendrobium (1,400 species) and Pleurothallis (1,000 species). It also includes Vanilla (the genus of the vanilla plant), the type genus Orchis, and many commonly cultivated plants such as Phalaenopsis and Cattleya. Moreover, since the introduction of tropical species into cultivation in the 19th century, horticulturists have produced more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars. Orchids are easily distinguished from other plants, as they share some very evident, shared derived characteristics, or synapomorphies. Among these are: bilateral symmetry of the flower (zygomorphism), many resupinate flowers, a nearly always highly modified petal (labellum), fused stamens and carpels, and extremely small seeds. 31432
They used to be called The Lake Gardens but a few years ago this wonderful place just off KL Sentral was transformed to the Lake Botanical Garden. It's a well-tended place and each season has its specialties; it's High Summer now (34 C.) and most of the orchids are really gone. But I did see this pretty, fleshy-peach colored Mokara sticking out its red tongue at Olymp!
Mokara is a cultivar first registered by Choi Yew Mok of Singapore in 1969, as a hybrid of Ascocentrum, Arachnis and Vanda (which you may know for its exquisite purple color). Mokara is now a favorite with florists all over the world.

This tiny Clearwing Hummingbird Moth was enjoying the Bee Balm nectar a lot. I have Googled how this nectar tastes and I found out that Bee Balm has a minty taste and a flavor similar to oregano. It also has a citrusy aroma.
Hummingbird Moth (Clearwing Moth)
At first sight, it’s easy to mistake a hummingbird moth for a tiny hummingbird. It feeds on the nectar of flowers, hovering with the body stationary, its transparent wings beating so fast as to be nearly invisible, and a long proboscis protruding beaklike into the blossom. In flight, the wings create a soft buzzing, also like a hummingbird.
Identification
Hummingbird moths are members of the sphinx moth family (Sphingidae), which have heavy bodies and long front wings. The wings of hummingbird moths are clear, with a black or brown border, and are nearly invisible when they fly. Males have a flared “tail” like that of a hovering hummingbird.
One obvious difference between the birds and the moths is size. The ruby-throated hummingbird can be 3” long. Hummingbird moths are much smaller at 1-1/2” long.
There are two species that you are more likely to see in Massachusetts:
The hummingbird clearwing (Hemaris thysbe) is by far the most commonly seen. It has an olive back, a red-brown abdomen, and pale legs.
The snowberry clearwing (Hemaris diffinis) is usually yellow and black, with black legs. It also has a black line running through its eyes and down its sides.
Behavior
While most sphinx moths fly at night, hummingbird moths fly during the day. They can be found in a wide variety of habitats, including open meadows, forest edges, and suburban gardens. They feed on flower nectar, dipping in a long thin proboscis.
Life Cycle

Hummingbird moths lay their eggs on plants. The mature caterpillars are plump, and yellowish green (or sometimes brownish), with the spiky tail horn typical of most sphinx moth caterpillars.
Depending on the species, these caterpillars may eat the leaves of viburnums, honeysuckles, snowberry, blueberries, and members of the rose family. They pupate in a thin cocoon in leaf litter, where they remain during the cold months, emerging as moths in late spring or early summer to visit flowers during the warm months.
Food
Adult hummingbird moths feed on nectar, so filling your garden with native nectar-bearing plants is a great way to attract hummingbird moths, as well as hummingbirds and butterflies.

A little dot moving in the garden, turned out to be one of the beautiful tiny jumping Maratus spiders found in many places in Australia.
I like the little white tuft of hair on the end of his third legs, he uses to wave to attract the female spiders attention.
'What's in a name? that which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet,' exclaims Shakespeare's Juliet, professing her love for Romeo no matter what or from whatever lineage he hails.
For our gleaming Metallic-Blue Mud Dauber Wasp things are just a bit more complicated. She was seen walking on the foliage of the orchid in the photo inset. It's an Aranthera, an intergeneric vandaceous hybrid of Arachnis and Renanthera.
Arachnid is the name, too, for the class to which Spiders belong. And far from being interested in the Orchid - even though named for Arachnis - Metallic-Blue was no doubt seeking out her favorite food, Jumping Spiders. I've seen them on many plants but never on Orchids, so Wasp might well go hungry. But her instincts are probably better than mine, who's never been particularly starving for Spiders. I stayed and watched a while until she flew off with no captures...

Last Spring, a few on-sprue German cavalry sabers found their way into my hands, but they all had shortshot blades. I did the best I could -- I saw the curved sprue attachment as an opportunity for a fantasy handguard, and filed the stubby shortshot into a sharp curve that fits a short elven Scoia'tael sword from The Witcher.
The grip is a lathed ODG sprue. I wanted light impressions of rings, but the sprue was slightly off-center during lathing, which turned out to be a happy accident... I got my light impressions, but only on one side of the grip, so they look like finger-holds.
I don't see myself making a Iorveth fig soon, so a forest backdrop it is. I made a little baby arachni for the landscape, but it's out of the shot!
A very rare species endemic to Northern Borneo. We have not yet seen it in situ, however the plant at the Kundasang War Memorial seems to be in continuous bloom as I have photos of it in bloom from every visit to the gardens. It is a hot growing species found low down on tree trunks.

Arachnis is a genus of epiphytic orchids in the Orchidaceae family. There are 13 species in the genus, distributed in tropical Asia. The name of the spider orchid probably comes from the characteristics of its flowers. Its petals are slender and wide apart, resembling the long legs of a spider, while the middle part of the flower can be seen as the body of a spider. Like many orchids, the Latin name of the spider orchid also comes from Greek. The Latin name of the spider orchid, Arachnis, evolved from the Greek word arachne, which means spider.
Not often seen but quite widespread species. Found from China, Taiwan, Assam, Eastern Himalayas, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam

A historically significant vandaceous hybrid, notably well-known for garden landscaping and commercial cut flowers throughout the 1970s.
Wong Leong Fatt of Federal Orchids in Penang is best remembered as the breeder of this hybrid from which several clones were so sought after during the Christine crzae in 1972. He was also the only local breeder who had won the Eric Hottum Gold Medal twice in two consecutive years.
