False Creek is a short inlet in the heart of Vancouver. It separates downtown from the rest of the city. It was named by George Henry Richards during his Hydrographic survey of 1856-63. George Richards named False Creek during his survey of the coast in the mid-19th century. While traveling along the south side of the Burrard Inlet, he thought he was traversing a creek; upon discovering his error, he gave the waterway its modern name. Wikipedia

Burrard Bridge (Background) Vancouver, BC CA

Opened: July 1st, 1932

The Burrard Bridge (also referred to as the Burrard Street Bridge) is a five-lane, Art Deco style, steel truss bridge constructed in 1930-1932 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The high, five part bridge on four piers spans False Creek, connecting downtown Vancouver with Kitsilano via connections to Burrard Street on both ends. It is one of three bridges crossing False Creek.

The architect of the Burrard Bridge was George Lister Thornton Sharp, the engineer John R. Grant. The bridge's two close approach spans are Warren trusses placed below deck level, while its central span is a Pratt truss placed above deck level to allow greater clearance height for ships passing underneath. The central truss is hidden when crossing the bridge in either direction by vertical extensions of the bridge's masonry piers into imposing concrete towers, connected by overhead galleries, which are embellished with architectural and sculptural details that create a torch-like entrance of pylons. Busts of Captain George Vancouver and Sir Harry Burrard-Neale in ship prows jut from the bridge’s superstructure (a V under Vancouver's bust, a B under Burrard’s) Info. as per Wikipedia

The Aquabus, also known as Aquabus Ferries Ltd., is a privately owned and operated ferry service that provides commuter and sightseeing services to locations all along False Creek of central Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The Aquabus started service in 1986

The Granville Street Bridge or Granville Bridge is an eight-lane fixed cantilever/truss bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia, carrying Granville Street between Downtown Vancouver southwest and the Fairview neighborhood. It spans False Creek and is 27.4 m (90 ft) above Granville Island. The bridge is part of Highway 99.

After 3 years I was back in Vancouver (where my son lives) and the first thing I did was strolling along False Creek, the short inlet that seperates downtown from he rest of the city.

What you see here is the building of Science World , built on behalf of World Expo '86. Nowadays it is a science museum.

The architect for the Science World dome was Bruno Freschi.

In the foreground three of the many small ferry boats that operate continuously on False Creek. These tiny ferries have stolen my heart, especially the ones of the False Creek Ferries fleet. :-)

The two sides of False Creek are full of interesting builidings and urban structures. For me however, it's the aquabus that's the most memorable! Aquabuses are those cute colourful boats providing ferry services for residents on both sides of the Creek. In this photo, I reduced most of the picture to almost black and white while leaving the cute boat still showing its colours, thus highlighting the sentiment that the charming boat in colour is the most vivid in my momories of False Creek, Vancouver BC.

The Granville Street Bridge is an eight lane bridge in Vancouver, British Columbia. It spans False Creek and is 27.4 metres above Granville Island. It is part of Highway 99.

History:

First bridge 1889

Media related to Granville Street Bridge (1889) at Wikimedia Commons

The original bridge was completed in 1889. It was a 732-metre long low timber trestle. The navigation span, near the north end, was a trussed timber swing span, tied with wire ropes to a central wooden tower. It was largely designed by the CPR, and cost $16,000. In 1891 the bridge was widened on both sides for streetcar tracks, except where the tracks converged for the swing span.

Second bridge 1909

Media related to Granville Street Bridge (1909) at Wikimedia Commons

The second bridge was completed in 1909. It was a longer, medium-level steel bridge with a through truss swing span.

Third bridge 1954

On February 4, 1954, the current Granville Street Bridge, costing $16.5 million, opened. A million cars would cross over the bridge in its first month. The city of Vancouver funded the bridge itself as Mayor Frederick Hume said "no formal assistance given by any other government body."

The eight-lane structure was constructed on the same alignment as the first bridge while steel plate girders salvaged from the second bridge made barges for constructing the foundations of the Oak Street Bridge.

The first “civilian” to drive over the 1954 bridge was the same woman who was first to drive over the second bridge in 1909. She had been widowed between the two openings, and so had a different name. Both times she was at the wheel of a brand-new Cadillac.

Science World at Telus World of Science, is a science centre run by a not-for-profit organization.

This geodesic dome ( golf ball shaped ) building was constructed for Expo '86. It was opened in 1985 as the Expo preview center and became the Expo '86 World's Fair Centre.

The height is 155 feet tall with a foundation of reinforced steel in a cement slab.

The dome is supported by 182 piles

There are 391 lights and 766 triangles on the Science World dome.

Constructed using 15,000 pounds of extruded aluminium and aluminium panels on the dome. The panels are 1 mm thick and are covered with a vinyl surface.

Science World has a total building area of 10,220 square metres and a total exhibit area of 4,275 square metres. The building’s volume is 36,790 cubic metres.

The air-conditioning system uses chilled water for cooling and gas-fired boilers for heating.

The OMIMAX Theatre seats 400 people

The screen is 27 metres in diameter. The theatre’s sound system uses high-fidelity, six-channel, two-way sound with sub-bass to create an unparalleled surround sound experience.

I read that the 15,000 watt xenon lamp that lights the movie screen is so bright that if it was placed on the surface of the moon and focused it at a spot on Earth, you would actually see its light.

The dome in this image was lit in red in honor of Remembrance Day. Remembrance Day (sometimes known informally as Poppy Day) is a memorial day observed in Commonwealth of Nations member states since the end of the First World War to remember the members of their armed forces who have died in the line of duty.
