PORT ADELAIDE EARLY CLOSERS. MESSRS. JONES BROTHERS' PICNIC, Herald, Friday 7 February 1902, p. 8: "The employees of Messrs. Jones Brothers, drapers and tailors, of Port Adelaide and Semaphore, tendered a complimentary picnic to the members of the firm on Saturday afternoon, February 1. Drags and wagonettes, prettily decorated, were in waiting at the St. Vincent Street premises at the closing time. The principals, with members of their families, were accommodated with seats in the front drag, and the procession, headed by the Port Temperance Brass Band, after parading the streets—handbills being distributed en route urging the public to shop before one o'clock on Saturdays—started for Tea Tree Gully, which was reached after a most enjoyable drive of an hour and a half. Refreshments were at once vigorously attacked; about 130 sitting down to a splendid luncheon. After submitting the loyal toasts, the chairman (Mr. E. Nottage) proposed the health of the firm and success to the Saturday half-holiday system. He said the object of the gathering was to celebrate the first anniversary of the birthday of their Saturday half-holiday, and to express the gratitude of the assistants to the employers for their determined efforts to provide and maintain the great boon of a Saturday half holiday in the face of all opposition. ... Sports, cricket, and games were indulged in, and at 7 o'clock the Port Temperance Band gave a "Continental" to a large gathering. A collection was taken up in aid of the Children's Hospital. Port Adelaide was reached about 9.45 p.m., both old and young having had a most enjoyable day's outing." - trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/110198976
