applied science-- obviously the piece of fencing (used as a backdrop
for posters to announce events) must have blown over a time or two
and some smart cookie affixed a counterweight, lowering center of gravity.
maybe it was one of the kids we taught ~grin~

Biomass and the Beast
Data from NASA satellites and lidar observations were used to create a global map estimating the amount and distribution of aboveground biomass (plants and plant-based materials) in the world’s rainforests. As part of a NASA-USAID venture helping developing countries assess environmental conditions and changes, the SERVIR team then determined potential targets for rainforest preservation. These online data are now helping Africa find new areas of unprotected rainforest for conserving and linking great ape habitats. NASA Earth Science’s Applied Sciences Program promotes efforts to discover and demonstrate innovative and practical uses of Earth science data and knowledge. We support applied research and applications projects that enable ways for organizations to apply data from Earth-observing environmental satellites to inform their decisions and actions. Biomass and the Beast is just one of many project highlights in the 2016 Applied Sciences Annual Report now available here: appliedsciences.nasa.gov/
