Not to be confused with Purple Ray.
A violet ray is an antique medical appliance used during the early 20th century to discharge in electrotherapy. Their construction usually featured a disruptive discharge coil with an interrupter to apply a high voltage, high frequency, low current to the human body for therapeutic purposes.
Nikola Tesla introduced his first prototype violet ray at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893.
A typical violet ray device consisted of an ungrounded, electrical control box that controlled the interrupter and housed the magneto coil, and an attached bakelite or other handle housing which contained the high voltage coil and an insertion port for attachments. Glass, evacuated tubes of varying shapes and for different therapeutic uses could be inserted into the bakelite handle to apply the resulting current to different parts of the body.
Violet ray treatments were said to cure everything from lower back pain to carbuncles. From an antique Master Violet Ray manual c. 1920 comes this treatment advice:
Brain Fog - Use Applicator No. I over forehead and eyes. Also treat the back of head and neck with strong current in direct contact with the skin. Treat the spine and hold the electrode in the hand. Ozone inhalations for about four minutes are also of importance.
Catarrh, Nasal - In this condition the Nasal Tube is used within the nose with a mild current within the nasal passage, two to five minutes on each side, followed by an application with the Surface Electrode externally over the area of the nose. Use Ozone Generator.
Cheese in a can whatever next!? I bought it just to photograph. Apparently spray cheese has been around since the 60's but I have never seen it before or even heard of it.
This is what it says about it:

The Browning farm ,Cowherd Road , Marion County, Kentucky. ...( Best viewed LARGE)........ After two afternoons I finished cutting most of the second growth locust saplings down , working by yourself gives a person time to think and it seems that everything here has a story. My father always told that when my grandfather purchased a thirty five acre addition to the farm in 1904 , this field " the locust thicket " was badly eroded with several gullys running through it. My grandfather went to his father,s farm and dug up several hundred locust saplings probably the same size as in the photo and planted them in the gullies to hold the soil.
They grew in size and in the mid 1960,s I remember Kelly Mattingly cutting most of the trees to be used as fence posts. This left a few scattered across the field for the cattle to use as shade from the sun.
I don,t know what the life expectancy of locust trees are, but two years ago we were down to a few scraggly limbs per tree. The bulldozer was on the farm taking out some fence rows so had him to finish off the trees left in the "locust thicket". Then due to a mix up with the chemical applicator the field did not get sprayed nor planted last year.
I guess this all turned out well. The ice storm destroyed a lot of our shade trees, now we have some saplings from the trees of my GG Grandfathers farm to plant as shade trees. I left ten of the better formed ones standing to transplant.

This is the base of an Egyptian perfume bottle that was a special gift from a close friend who just returned from Cairo. The musk oil inside is a special treat. Although the ornate glass top and applicator are beautiful, the base shadow is what I was trying to photograph for this theme. Height of item shown is 1-3/4”, total height of item is 3-1/4”.
Looking out from a snag in the yard to see if the coast is clear.
We had a Cooper's hawk in a tree and the red-breasted wasn't going out until it was sure it was clear.
The hawk left without breakfast.

It may carry the resin in its bill or on pieces of bark that it uses as an applicator. The male puts the resin primarily around the outside of the hole while the female puts it around the inside. The resin may help to keep out predators or competitors. The nuthatch avoids the resin by diving directly through the hole.

Perhaps one of the first of several dozen images I took 57 years ago: 1966 or 67.
My younger brother was three or four, I twelve or thirteen; I had quite luckily gotten the Polaroid Swinger "Sentinel" model for Christmas. It was a big deal.
I don't imagine that the adults of that time or today would consider Polaroid's effort to be of archival quality ,or anywhere near the integrity of regular film.
I can remember the motor buzz as the flat film came out, peeling the backing off, and putting a clear gloss layer on the image side with an applicator that came with film packs; you can see the remainder of the glossy coating on the unretouched picture.
I am happy beyond my words to have this image ,and that I had the interest to take it long ago; unlike the 620 contact prints I later developed and fixed, this one survived.
I am nine years senior to my brother Dave, and as time would have it ,we are the last two living in the family we grew up with. .

Many Avengers have survived into the 21st century working as spray-applicators and water-bombers throughout North America, particularly in New Brunswick. Forest Protection Limited (FPL) of Fredericton once owned and operated the largest civilian fleet of Avengers in the world. FPL began operating Avengers in 1958 after purchasing 12 surplus TBM-3E aircraft from the Royal Canadian Navy. Use of the Avenger fleet at FPL peaked in 1971 when 43 aircraft were in use as both water bombers and spray planes. FPL was still operating 3 Avengers in 2007 configured as water-bombers. The company sold 3 Avengers in 2004 (C-GFPS, C-GFPM, and C-GLEJ) to museums or private collectors. The Central New Brunswick Woodsmen’s Museum has a former FPL Avenger on static display.
Normally we don't have red-breasted nuthatches in the summer.
They are around in the cooler weather looking for a quick meal.
