Molen "Geertruida Cornelia" , Gorssel / The Netherlands

The permit to build the mill was applied for in 1893, but construction was not completed until 1895 due to the death of the applicant. In addition to the mill, in 1896 a mechanical grinding device was added, powered by a petroleum engine of eight horsepower. The engine was replaced by a diesel engine in 1921. The windmill came to a standstill in 1935 due to a broken rod. Both rods were removed: one rod (sawn into beams) is still in a neighbor's shed, the other rod ended up in the Dutch Open Air Museum in Arnhem. The motor mill took over the work of the windmill until 1972.

In 1999, the entire mill complex with miller's house and mill was restored. The mill was officially opened in 2000.

History from Wikipedia :

An application to build a windmill on the Common was denied in 1799 when the applicant, one John Watney, failed to produce plans for the proposed mill when requested. In 1816, Charles March, a carpenter of Roehampton applied for permission to build a windmill. The request was granted the following year and the mill was built. The mill stopped working in 1864, when the miller was evicted by the Lord of the Manor, Earl Spencer, who wanted to enclose the common for his own use. The miller insisted on removing most of the machinery so that the mill could not be operated in competition with his other mills at Kingston. The main mill building was rebuilt with brickwork to provide living accommodation.

The enclosure of the common was strongly opposed by the local people, who successfully got the 1871 Wimbledon and Putney Commons Act passed, handing the care of the commons to elected and appointed conservators. In 1892, tenders for the repair of the mill were sought by the Commons Conservators, and Messrs. Sanderson & Sons tender of £240 was accepted. Royal Wimbledon Golf Club contributed £50 towards the cost of the repairs. During repairs, it was discovered that the main Post and Crosstrees were rotten and Sandersons proposed converting the mill to a smock mill, at a total cost of £350. The work was reported as being complete in November 1893. The original Patent sails were replaced by a shorter set of sails with fixed shutters. After the loss of a sail in the 1920s another set of sails with fewer shutters was placed on the mill.

During World War II, the mill was camouflaged with a drab green scheme to reduce its visibility and one of its sails was removed, as it was in close proximity to army camps set up on the Common. The mill was repainted after the war ended, but the sails were stopped in 1946 due to excessive wear in the gearing. In 1952, the mill was inspected and a list of repairs drawn up. After a public appeal in 1954 to raise funds, the mill was restored and the sails turned again on 25 May 1957. The mill was restored again in 1975 and turned into a museum. In 1999 a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund enabled the Patent sails to be restored to working order. The museum, initially only on one floor but extended to two in 1999, depicts the story of windmills from their early origins up to the present day, using models, examples of machinery and tools of the trade. A room from one of the smaller apartments is preserved to illustrate how the building was used as accommodation. It is no longer a working mill, but a finely detailed model shows the machinery as it was in its working days.

On 2 August 2015, a sail fell from the mill, damaging the base below. The collapse of the sail was caused by long-term water ingress. The sails were restored in 2016.

In the service of the famous Kew Gardens were, of course, many botanists and horticulturalists, many of whom traveled and collected plants 'round the Globe. But also engaged were non-academic collectors who often were sent on hazardous expeditions on behalf of Dame Flora. Such a one was Anton Pantalaeon Hove (or: Hoveau) (fl.1785-1829) of Poland. He'd been the only applicant for an advertised job to find plants in India.

On his way there Hove collected wherever his ship made landfall. And so in 1786 on the northern coast of what today is Namibia (at Angra Fria, just below the Angolan border; that place has not infrequently been conflated with the Bay of Angra on the Azores) Hove found 17 Pelargoniums. Of those 17 only three - among which Our Plant - survived the voyage back to Kew.

It is said to flower in July - if that's July in Namibia it's the chilly season, and it would seem fitting for it to blossom here in Amsterdam just now...

I took my mom out with me today. The mission - A Great Gray.

I am thrilled to report MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

FYI: After careful deliberation, I have decided to contract out my Mother's excellent scouting abilities. She is 87 years young and she works for cheap. She is always up for an adventure! She will gladly accept various tokens of appreciation - a small Tim Hortons coffee, one cream, a toasted, cheese tea biscuit with jam and a bag of spicy chips. She also likes a Honey Crisp apple but you must cut it up. Stimulating conversation is a must but you cannot dump her out into the ditch if you do not agree with her political, religious or any other controversial views that WILL arise during the scouting services. All interested applicants please apply!

My daughter graduated from Stanford last Sunday adding a major in Management Science and Enginering to her three golds in World Rowing Championships (among other athletic achievements in rowing). Next stop: Olympics, Paris '24.

It's worth mentioning that the year she applied there was above 47.000 applicants to Stanford. Only 1700 where admitted. Annual fees, tuition plus allowances, are around 100.000 USD/year at Stanford. Esther enjoyed a full scholarship thanks to having reached the top 5% in the USA academic rankings (SAT, ACT), besides her outstanding athletic achievements, let alone having successfully undergone all Stanford's demanding selective procedures.

Should anyone ask me... yep, I'll say that we are pretty proud of our daughter although being the parents of this type of critters isn't as easy as it could seem LOL. Thanks to all of you my friends who have been following her achivements over the past few years, showing your support. I owed you this pict.

Information from Wikipedia

Wimbledon Windmill is a Grade II* listed windmill situated on Wimbledon Common in the west of South London, and is preserved as a museum.

Wimbledon Windmill was built as a hollow post mill, with the drive to the stones passing through the centre of the main post. It was a hollow post mill for its entire working life, but was rebuilt as a smock mill when it was preserved in 1893. The mill has double Patent sails and is winded by a fantail. The windmill has an octagonal brick base of two stories, above which is a conical tower formerly housing the main post. The cast-iron windshaft carries four double Patent sails, and a 6 feet (1.83 m) diameter cast iron Brake Wheel with about 60 wooden cogs, which formerly drove the cast-iron Wallower carried on a cast iron Upright Shaft. A Spur Wheel at the lower end of the upright shaft would have driven the millstones on the upper floor of the mill. The conversion from Hollow Post mill to a Smock mill was done by Sanderson's, the Louth millwrights.

Isle of Virgin Mary Parga

This green islet is right in front of the harbor of Parga, at a very short distance, which you can even swim. The Virgin Mary's Island owes its name to the Panagia Church with its characteristic bell tower, which is located there. At the highest point of the island there is a beautiful French castle, built by the French conquerors in 1808 during their stay here (1797-1814), in order to control the small ships at the port, which were not visible from the castle. From this castle has survived the enclosure, the gate and the fortress, all drowned in the green of the island.

Elizabeth Videka-Beaulieu, Kindness – Prospect St. and Pearson St.

The last few years have been trying for both individuals and communities. While it can become blindingly overwhelming at times to focus on the strife, I have found it crucial to recognize and celebrate the ways in which we have come together. “Kindness” is a visual representation of some of the quiet moments of unity I have witnessed in the Burlington community. The hope is that the images throughout the mural will remind those who view it, that no act of kindness is ever too small.

Burlington’s public art program is once again opening submissions for the annual Local Artist Program. Six artists will be commissioned to create a variety of small- to medium-scale artworks that will be used as utility box vinyl wraps throughout the community.

All applicants must be residents of Burlington.

Angela Paparizo, manager of arts and culture, said it’s an especially important time to support creativity in the community.

“Art plays a powerful role in bringing people together. As we begin to embark and adapt to a post-pandemic life, artists play a crucial role in reflecting upon and expressing our shared experiences. Artists are encouraged to submit artwork that focuses on inspiring and uplifting the community during this new phase of what continues to be challenging times,” said Paparizo.

This is a design-only commission, as the City of Burlington will be responsible for the fabrication and installation of the vinyl wraps. Burlington artists may create a new artwork concept for this project or reformat an existing artwork. Successful artists will be required to submit a high-resolution digital file of their artwork concept.

“I am excited to see this year’s submissions for this popular project that brings vitality and beauty to traffic signal boxes around Burlington. It is my hope that Burlington artists will share their creative vision for this artwork that will add to our urban art gallery of wrapped traffic signal boxes,” Paparizo said.

The six locations the artwork will be placed are New Street and Shoreacres Road, New Street and Appleby Line, Lakeshore Road near the hospital, Prospect Street and Pearson Street, Upper Middle Road and Cavendish Drive and Walkers line and Thomas Alton Boulevard.

Going to miss my flowers that just pop up when it’s their time to shine. 4 weeks left in our house then we move to a miserable place for 12 months until tenants from our other property move out. They lost their jobs thru our 111 day lockdown during covid. Those circumstances do not allow them to apply for a housing loan they need proof of a regular income which luckily they both have new employment now. And why I say miserable is because this house is cold dark damp no sunshine comes in thru any windows. It’s dreary. Applying for a rental in these pandemic times we were up against at least 200 other applicants each rental. Just by sheer luck this house become available and we did not have to compete against any others. I think the poor real estate lady saw how desperate we were getting. We needed the space for our cars a horse truck and a massive food van. This has the space but nothing else going for it. Should be grateful I know.

GHOST OF THE MOUNTAIN • Dark Country Blues Slide Guitar

- Justin Johnson -

Mount Whitney is the highest mountain in the contiguous United States and the Sierra Nevada, with an elevation of 14,505 feet. The peak is just left of center, I was about 30 miles away as the crow flies when taking this photo.

-----------------------------------------

To climb Mt Whitney you must enter a lottery for permits. with applicants obliged to choose whether they plan to climb in a day or over multiple days. Results will be announced online March 15, when good or bad news will be posted to hikers’ personal profiles on the website. Last year, 29% of lottery entrants got good news. The year before, 28%.

At 14,505 feet, Mt. Whitney is the highest peak in the Sierra Nevada and the contiguous U.S. The most common path to the top includes 6,200 feet of vertical gain from the trailhead at Whitney Portal, 14 miles west of Lone Pine in Inyo County.

It can be dangerous, especially when snow remains on the trail. The Inyo County Sheriff’s Department reported at least four Whitney climbing deaths in 2021 and 2022, many of them “in spring or early summer due to falls on snow and ice.” Despite drought conditions throughout the West, the National Weather Service and California Department of Water Resources officials have reported an unusually heavy snowpack in the Sierra Nevada so far this winter.

“At higher elevations the snow might linger as late as July,” said Lisa Cox, public information officer for Inyo National Forest, in an email Tuesday. “People will need ice axes, crampons, and additional skills (and training) to travel on snow and ice-covered slopes. This shouldn’t necessarily deter people from going, but [be] prepared to turn around before reaching the destination of your choice, a.k.a the peak.”

The trailhead is 8,374 feet above sea level. From there, the most popular route is a 22-mile route up the mountain and back, including a stretch of 99 switchbacks near the top. In all, the trail typically entails 12-14 hours of climbing (and packing out your own waste in a WAG bag, named for Waste Aggregation and Gelling).

U.S. Forest Service officials call the route “non-technical, but strenuous” when it’s free of snow, which is usually from July to late September.

With the amount of snowfall this winter there may be snow and ice through the year.

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that will add a $100,000 (£74,000) annual fee for applicants to the H-1B visa programme for skilled foreign workers.

Trump's order mentions "abuse" of the programme and will restrict entry unless payment is made.

Critics have long argued that H-1Bs undercut the American workforce, while supporters - including billionaire Elon Musk - argue it allows the US to attract top talent from around the world.

In another order, Trump set up a new "gold card" to fast-track visas for certain immigrants in exchange for fees starting at £1m.

Trump's order is due to come into force on 21 September. It would only apply to new requests, but companies would have to pay the same amount for each applicant for six years, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said.

(Ever heard the phrase "cutting off your nose to spite your face").

If America had the skilled workers don't they think they would hire them! Or is there something else behind this - I mean $100,000 plus salary, plus relocation expenses - these "skilled workers" must be something or someone special.

Hope Flynn, Summer Breeze – Lakeshore Rd. near Joseph Brant Hospital

When you think of Burlington, the first thing that pops into most people’s minds is the waterfront. In my opinion, one of the most beautiful scenes in Ontario. The dog exploring the park represents people exploring Burlington events such as Sound of Music, Ribfest, etc. There is always something new to explore in Burlington. Summer Breeze represents the hope that we can explore the beauty of Burlington, enjoy life and appreciate the moment we have on earth.

Hello!

My name is Theodore Q. Spacepants.

My friends just call me Ted.

I cam across an interesting ad on the Inter-Link Help Wanted site.

It seems a famous explorer of Aquatic Zones throughout the galaxy was looking for some help. His name was Jock Clouseau, and he was offering a big reward for anyone who could search the waters of their home planet for hydrolator crystals.

Applicants needed to provide their own submarine.

Well, I didn't have my own submarine, but I was able to cobble together an aquatic rover in my workshop. I was pretty sure it would be watertight.

It actually seemed to work pretty well. Exploring the ocean depths turned out to be amazing. I never did find any hydrolator crystals, but I did meet some very interesting inhabitants of the vibrant coral reef. Who knew there was this whole other world just below the surface?

The mural concept stems from my love of birdwatching, bird photography and painting and sketching birds. For many years, especially the last two years during the pandemic, I’ve been watching birds around my neighbourhood. In the winter months birdwatching is something I can do from inside my home and during the rest of the year it can be done in my own neighbourhood. In Burlington we’re fortunate to have many parks and easy access to green space.

The secret world of the STS

If you didn't believe the existence of the STS from the pilot episode last Friday then you probably failed to notice the initial barrage of Explores that have hit Flickr in the last 48 hours and disappeared just as fast proving the stealth quality of this unit. Those that have been intrigued by this new fly-on-the-lens documentary from Flickr will have undoubtedly googled the acronym only to find that a meaningful description does not exist apart from the internet slang... Smirk To Self!

Well our man on the ground can officially tell you STS simply stands for Special Tog Services. A crack force of highly-trained togs who's fearless nature knows no bounds... they go places where Instagrammers fear to tread!

But to know how this landmark series got off the ground we have to go right back in time to June 2019. Only those that understand the workings of the dark web found the application buried in an inconspicuous WhatsApp group "B***'s I** Ph*t* Sal*n" - a classified porthole that few have found! However those that did, applied from all over the world... including Yorkshire. In the following weeks the applicants were fettled down to just 7 recruits, such are the high standards set by the STS.

Everything is on a need-to-know basis and the recruits were instructed to rendezvous at an undisclosed location in Wigan... this turned out to be a curry house and the first assignment. This might seem innocent and non-threatening, but a recruit from a previous intake suffered severe fallout in the field after failing to read the chilli rating on the menu correctly and ordered a Naga! The area is still a no-go zone to the general public and is expected to outlast Chernobyl's half-life.

At this point it must be explained that the recruits cannot be named for security reasons. If they pass the course and wish to join the STS then their identity will be erased until 20 years after their death. For purposes of the documentary they shall be known as Candidate #1 through #7... C1, C2, etc.

Unlike SAS: Who Dares Wins, there are no DS's (Directing Staff) to mollycoddle you through. It has never been disclosed whether the STS have DT's but random messages and instructions are delivered throughout the course... a bit like a Top Gear challenge.

So the adventure begins in a little curry house in Wigan, a popular haunt with the locals as it was packed to the rafters with two customers. C3 was first to find the location and had already befriended the staff by purchasing several pints whilst hoping other recruits had worked out the rendezvous point. Several hours later C1, C2, C4 and C5 arrived. This angered C3 immensely as he was out of pocket before the course had officially begun.

A message arrived.... two more recruits had made it through the selection process and were on their way. An unforeseen interrogation at a camera club meeting had delayed them but they had cleverly avoided questions about the overly packed military grade SUV with onboard slow-cooker. They shall be referred to as C6 and C7 from now on.

The five recruits ate a hearty curry, staying well clear of the potential botty-burners strategically hidden in the menu. The mission lay far away in a foreign land and the thought of the transit vehicles having no opening windows wasn't worth risking the mission from the outset.

A mobile vibrated into life.... C2 answered!

"Shall we stop off at Glen Coe for a sunrise en route to Skye?" a distorted disguised voice asked.

Could this be the DT, C2 thought to himself.

"Yes" he replied without hesitation, not wanting to feel like the runt of the litter at the first challenge.

"Meet at the fluky comp winner's home at 23:00 hrs"... the mobile went dead.

C2 recalled the instructions to the other four recruits. The mood changed and a sense of foreboding was hard to conceal on the faces of the other recruits.

"That's a bloody stupid time to be setting off... we'll never make the stop-off!" exclaimed C3 "count me out, what sort of Mickey Mouse outfit is this".

He takes his arm band off... "I request VW...I'm going home!"

The bill is paid and the four leave together wishing C3 all the best for making it through the curry.

When the four arrived at the second rendezvous point, C6 and C7 are all ready there. The two transport vehicles are repacked and the six set off into the night.

And so the STS's search for new recruits continues...

Teadio, Love is everywhere (Beware) – New St. and Shoreacres Rd.

“Love is everywhere (Beware)” is based on street artist Banksy’s work. It is construed as a comradely comeback to his “Love is in the bin” intervention art, which in turn is based on another piece of his own art, “Girl with balloon.” In my work, by filling the scene with balloons, some sprouting out of soil, others already released, I want to strengthen the “there is always hope” thought and help downhearted onlookers visualize hope and its rhythm. The girl in my image borrows Canadian attributes, wearing a winter jacket as opposed to a summer dress. She looks down, focused on the new hope that germinates out of ground, as opposed to looking up to balloons take wing.

I was thinking about posting some more Manitowoc shots but that's been pretty well covered by the rest of the goobs. So here's something a bit different.

WC tac loads scream above a WC local at Valley on the NAPM layout. I'm a member applicant at NAPM and have been enjoying the 18 scale miles of track to run trains around. Yesterday, DanK and I made a run down there to operate his F45 across the layout with some of my power. Kenny also made it down there, and supplied the ore jennys for this shot. It was a good run day.

Staying focused on the positive these days can be easier said than done. Every time I get out for a walk in the forest there is something about the smells of cedars and forest vegetation, the light and the fresh air in my lungs that makes it so much easier to see things with a healthier perspective. It’s so inspiring I often come home full of artistic energy and paint something I’ve seen on a walk. My design reflects the importance of having accessible natural settings for the community to reset, reflect and recharge emotionally. Forests well represent community support and teamwork, which we need to thrive right now.

The Mars One Project

Mars One is a nonprofit organization based in the Netherlands that has proposed to land the first humans on Mars and establish a permanent human colony there by 2027. The private spaceflight project is led by Dutch entrepreneur "Bas Lansdorp", who announced the Mars One project in May 2012. The project's schedule, technical and financial feasibility, as well as ethics have been criticized by scientists, engineers and those in the aerospace industry.

Mars One's original concept included launching a robotic lander and orbiter as early as 2016 to be followed by a human crew of four in 2022. Organizers plan for the crew to be selected from applicants who paid an administrative fee, to become the first permanent residents of Mars with no plan of returning to Earth. Partial funding options include a proposed reality television program documenting the journey. In February 2015, the primary contractors on the first robotic mission had completed all studies paid for by Mars One.

The concept for Mars One began in 2011 with discussions between the two founders, Bas Lansdorp and Arno Wielders. The Mars One organization is the controlling stockholder of the for-profit Interplanetary Media Group.

I guess you wonder why a ski chalet is located here on the shore of Virginia among the rivers, creeks and the Chesapeake Bay.

This is a ski instructor training facility. It isn’t very big because, frankly, not too many beachy young folk in swimwear want to be ski instructors. Also we get very little snow here. A couple of inches at a time.

So how this works is the applicants (or applicant) gets to live in this marvelous chalet to give them the feel of a real mountain retreat.

The training begins with the students putting on their snow suits, helmets (now required by the State when skiing), gloves, etc. Then they put on their skis and proceed to the back of the chalet where there is a rope tow to take them to the top of the roof. The teacher stands a safe distance away on the ground. (Don’t they always!)

Once they are balanced on the peak of the roof, the teacher blows the whistle and the student skis down the slope of the roof. It is more difficult than it looks because 98% of the time there is no snow.

Trees are placed strategically around the roof to help break their fall and to teach them to watch out for hazards on the slope.

After a hard day of training the students get to sit on the screened porch and drink a hot toddy in front of the fake fireplace. Ski instruction at its best.

I only know one fellow who graduated. After his broken legs healed he took a job in Vale, Colorado at a lovely ski resort.

I think this photo might qualify for Slider Sunday, because it is all about sliding. One other interesting point. There seems to be a mummified bird in the window just above the porch roof. It is hard to see the bird because I had to take this picture on the fly (haha) and the focus could be better, if I’m honest.
