This Baroque-style Catholic church, completed in 1734, is dedicated to Saint Gallus.

The church is renowned for its unique visibility from the Gotthard railway line. Due to the helical tunnels of the railway, passengers can view the church from three different angles during their journey, making it one of Switzerland's most recognized churches.

Inside, the church features a high altar crafted by Jodokus Ritz, adding to its historical and artistic significance.

While the Pfarrkirche St. Gallus is the primary church in Wassen, there may be other smaller chapels or places of worship in the area. However, specific information about additional churches in Wassen is limited.

The Vogtsbauernhof Farmhouse, located within the Black Forest Open Air Museum (Schwarzwälder Freilichtmuseum) in Gutach, is the centerpiece and namesake of the museum. It is one of the best-preserved examples of a traditional Black Forest farmhouse and offers visitors an in-depth look at rural life in the region over 400 years ago.

Historical Overview

Construction Date: Built in 1612, the Vogtsbauernhof served as a home for generations of farming families.

Original Location: The farmhouse was originally located in the Gutach valley before becoming the cornerstone of the open-air museum in 1964.

Function: It was designed as a self-contained living and working space for a farming family, including accommodations for livestock, storage areas, and tools essential for their livelihood.

Architectural Features

Thatched Roof: The steep, wide thatched roof is one of its most iconic features. This design helps shed heavy snow and rain, critical for the harsh Black Forest winters.

Timber Frame Construction: Built using the half-timbered style common in the region, with a solid wood framework filled with wattle and daub or stone.

Integrated Design: The farmhouse combines living quarters, a barn, and storage spaces under one roof, reflecting the practical needs of the time.

Cellar and Upper Floors: The cellar was used for food storage, while the upper floors housed grain, tools, and sometimes sleeping quarters.

Interior Layout

Living Quarters:

The main living area is centered around a large tiled stove, which provided warmth during the cold months.

Furnishings include handmade wooden furniture, decorated cabinets, and household items typical of a 17th-century farming family.

Kitchen:

Equipped with an open hearth, cooking utensils, and examples of traditional Black Forest cookware.

Demonstrates food preparation and preservation techniques, such as smoking meat and storing grains.

Animal Stalls:

Located on the lower level, where livestock such as cows, pigs, and chickens were kept. The heat from the animals helped to warm the living spaces above.

Barn Area:

Large spaces for hay, straw, and farming tools, essential for supporting the self-sufficient lifestyle of its occupants.

Cultural and Historical Significance

Representation of Black Forest Life: The Vogtsbauernhof embodies the ingenuity and resilience of Black Forest farming families, who adapted their homes and lifestyles to the challenging environment.

Educational Value: Through its exhibits, the farmhouse provides insight into:

Seasonal farming practices.

Social structures of rural communities.

Architectural adaptations to the region’s climate and terrain.

Visitor Experience

Authentic Atmosphere: The farmhouse is meticulously restored and furnished to transport visitors back to the 17th century.

Interactive Exhibits:

Seasonal demonstrations of farming tasks, such as plowing, bread baking, and flax processing.

Reenactments of daily life activities by museum staff in period clothing.

Guided Tours: Available in multiple languages, offering deeper insights into the history and architecture of the building.

Connection to the Museum

The Vogtsbauernhof serves as the foundation of the Black Forest Open Air Museum, which has expanded to include several other historic farmhouses, mills, and outbuildings relocated from across the region. Together, they form a comprehensive showcase of Black Forest heritage, but the Vogtsbauernhof remains the iconic heart of the collection.

Situated in the granite area of the middle Black Forest. Triberg presents an impressive natural spectacle in the form of Germany's highest waterfalls. The waters of the Gutach stream tumble down 163m over many cascades. More than half a million visitors per year enjoy the falls and the countryside around them, with the surrounding mountains reaching about 1,000 m above sea level.

From the many hiking possibilities, we have selected three trails for you, indicated on this sign, which capture the various facets of the region. The three walks proposed are the Cascade Trail, the Culture Trail and the Nature Trail all of which will prove worthwhile regardless of which you choose. Sturdy footwear is strongly recommended in order not to expose yourself to any unnecessary danger.

We urge you to remain on the marked paths at all times.

Triberg Waterfalls are sometimes claimed (as on the sign in this image) to be the highest in Germany but this claim is actually incorrect, as Germany's highest waterfall is the Rothbachfall, near the Konigssee in Upper Bavaria.

The Triberg Waterfalls are waterfalls, (some may regard them as a series of 7 cascades over a 163m drop in altitude) near Triberg in the Black Forest in Baden-WĂźrttemberg (Germany). They are nevertheless a much-visited attraction in the Black Forest region.

Above Triberg, in the midst of Black Forest, the Gutach river plunges over seven major steps from a gently undulated high plain into a rocky V-shaped valley.

In Triberg, at the bottom of the falls, the deep valley forms a basin just wide enough for a small town. The steep basin and the waterfalls were initially formed by two faults in the granite and then by glaciers during several glaciations of the Pleistocene.

The upper part of the falls is less spectacular. Here the water is used by a small an old hydroelectric power plant.

Along the Nature Trail we encountered a kiosk where a small fee for entry was required.

Fatschbach Falls originate from the Fatschbach Stream which flows out of Lake Greissseeli, located on the top of the mountain above Vorfrutt. The stream flows over steep cliffs and down from the lake cascading dramatically down the cliffs before reaching the valley below where the Fatschbach Stream flows down the Urner Boden Valley beside Klausen Pass.

This waterfall is located just before the hairpin ascent to Klausen Pass summit begins just after you pass through Vorfrutt.

These falls appear to be not well documented online and may not be marked on some maps, nevertheless it's a striking feature of the area when in heavy flow though not so in my photo.

Heaven's Gate is popular tourist attractions located 18-20 km from Sapa City Centre.

The journey by road takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes by car or motorbike with the route following the scenic National Highway 4D which winds through the mountains passing the Silver Falls while offering stunning views of terraced rice fields and waterfalls until it reaches the famous O Quy Ho Pass, also known as Hoang Lien Pass, or simply as, Sapa Pass. The elevation above sea level at O Quy Ho Pass reaches 2,035 metres above sea level and with a length of over 50 kilometres, the pass is renowned as the "king of passes” in the Northwestern region of Vietnam.

The point where the elevation reaches 2,000 meters is aptly named "Cong Troi" or Heaven's Gate and from this vantage point, visitors can gaze down at the formidable terrain of Hoang Lien Son Mountain Range or simply marvel at the grandeur of Fansipan, Vietnam's highest peak.

The Chärstelenbach River flows into the Reuss River at Amsteg which has its headwaters near Witenwasserntal and flows all the away to Lake Urnersee. (Lake Urnersee, also known as Lake of Uri, is the northernmost arm of Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) in Switzerland.)

On its journey the Reuss River flows through Wassen, our next overnight destination. The Chärstelenbach River begins at Lake Hufisee, high in the mountains to the east of Amsteg.

The Gotthard railway line in Switzerland features several notable viaducts between Amsteg and Gurtnellen in the canton of Uri. One prominent structure is the Chärstelenbach Bridge, which spans the Chärstelenbach gorge near Amsteg. This bridge is approximately 127 metres long and 53 metres high, facilitating the railway's passage over the gorge.

Another significant bridge in this area is the Intschireuss Bridge, located near Gurtnellen. At 77 metres, it stands as the highest bridge in the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) network.

These viaducts are part of the Gotthard railway line, a key north-south route through Switzerland, connecting Erstfeld to GĂśschenen and continuing through the Gotthard Tunnel. The line is renowned for its engineering feats, including multiple spirals and bridges that navigate the challenging terrain of the Reuss valley.

For those interested in exploring the area, the village of Amsteg offers historical insights and scenic views. Notably, Amsteg was bypassed by the railway when the Gotthard Railway opened in 1882, leading to a decline in traffic through the village. However, the increase in car traffic after World War II and the opening of the motorway in 1980 have since revitalized the area.

Travelers can also enjoy the Maderaner Valley High Trail, which offers picturesque views of the region, including the Chärstelenbach Bridge.

These viaducts and the surrounding landscapes highlight the impressive engineering and natural beauty of the Uri region in Switzerland.

The Reformed Church of EnnetbĂźhl was established in 1755.

It is associated with the Swiss Reformed Church, which follows the Reformed (Calvinist) tradition of Protestant Christianity. This denomination is one of the largest in Switzerland and is rooted in the teachings of reformers such as Huldrych Zwingli and John Calvin. The Swiss Reformed Church is known for its emphasis on scripture, simplicity in worship, and a decentralized church structure.

EnnetbĂźhl became an independent parish for the Reformed community. Prior to its establishment, parishioners from EnnetbĂźhl were part of the parishes of Nesslau or Krummenau.

EnnetbĂźhl is a village located in the municipality of Nesslau, within the Toggenburg region of the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. The municipality of Nesslau was formed on January 1, 2013, through the merger of the former municipalities of Nesslau-Krummenau and Stein.

The Toggenburg region, where EnnetbĂźhl is situated, is characterized by its diverse landscape, including flat terrain, gently rolling hills, and jagged mountains. Historically, the inhabitants of this region primarily engaged in farming, with the weaving industry providing a supplementary income. The emergence of the manual embroidery industry led to the conversion of domestic weaving cellars into embroidery workshops.

Today, Ennetbühl and its surrounding areas offer various recreational activities, such as the Schneeschuhtrail Hemberg–Ennetbühl, a snowshoe trail that allows visitors to explore the picturesque landscapes of the region.
