“MOTHER SHIP – Artist’s drawing shows the Apollo “mother ship” as it may look in orbit around the Moon just before the three Houston astronauts return to Earth. The three men sit in the pointed “command module” or cabin. Behind them is the “service module” that contains the huge rocket that will fire them away from their Moon orbit and return them to Earth. Near Earth the cone-shaped command module will be separated from the service module, and the astronauts will fall to Earth in their three-man cabin.”

Note the large strake - even casting a shadow – on the exterior of the Command Module. To me, the crew looks to be near earth, but hey, earth/moon, whatever...close enough for government work, right?

Unfortunately, there's no signature. However, 1963/NAA would suggest Gary Meyer, in addition to the strong similarity to at least two other works, to include the ‘cut’ pattern of the cutaway views... one of those conclusively identified as Mr. Meyer. I'm counting this as another ‘WIN’!

The verso bears alpha-numeric identification similar to that used by North American Aviation/Rockwell, for the illustrations featured in this latter news/press publication. So I’m assuming this image was possibly used in some earlier similar documentation:

"MEN ON THE MOON -- When America's first two-man team lands on the moon, one of their first tasks will be to obtain a sample of lunar materials as quickly as possible in event they have to make an emergency takeoff. If things go well, they will spend 25 hours on the surface, gathering up to 80 pounds of rocks, dust and other material to be put into vacuum-sealed containers. The artist's concept shows one astronaut gathering samples from a crater while his companion watches from the Lunar Module. Later, the two will roam up to 300 feet from the craft, working on a "buddy" system, to plant several measuring devices on the surface which will radio information to Earth."

By 1966, I would’ve expected hand tools to have been depicted. Artistic license? Or, since it's the contingency sample that “Neil" is grabbing, the KISS principle may have been applied.

Although I’ve been informed (by a reputable source) that this is by Henry Lozano, I still kind of think it’s by Gary Meyer. Actually, who cares, it’s outstanding.

North American Rockwell artist's rendering of the Lunar Module's descent and landing, likely issued either shortly before or shortly after the Apollo 11 mission.

As was often the case during LEM/LM development, this is a circa 1968/69 derivative of earlier artist’s concepts (possibly commencing in 1963), updated/modified to reflect the latest external design changes. Or, as in this case, changes to the local lunar environs. In this iteration, the mountainous background present in a previous version(s) has/have been removed, possibly reflecting awareness of the flatness of the Mare Tranquillitatis landing site. Therefore likely being modified either shortly prior to the mission or shortly thereafter.

Per an earlier issuance with the same LM & mountains still present:

"Apollo Moon Mission Sequence 5 -- With one

“SOUNDING THE ALL CLEAR: Following a successful launch, a tall, slender tower on top of the man-carrying command module of the Apollo Spacecraft is jettisoned by firing a rocket. The launch escape tower is designed to pull the crew capsule free of the Apollo Saturn vehicle should anything go wrong on the pad or within the first few seconds after blastoff. After the first-stage boosters of the Saturn launch vehicle burn out -- about 36 miles up -- the spacecraft could be returned to earth, even in an emergency, by normal reentry maneuvers. At that point the launch escape system is no longer needed so the tower is separated from the command module, which continues its flight. The tower-jettison motor is made by the Elkton, Maryland, Division of Thiokol Chemical Corporation.”

Based on the Command Module being a Block I, I’m guessing 1966/67. As such, note the accommodations made in the Boost Protective Cover for the scimitar antennas.

A beautiful work by Thiokol Chemical Corporation artist, “G. R. Miller”. Not surprisingly, I’ve found nothing on him.
