I've worked third shift for seven years now. Every morning, I take a few minutes to watch the dawn break. I've probably seen more sunrises than most. Its a magical moment when the dark mysterious night loses its grip and a new day begins. There is a gentle silence, there are rich deep colors embracing you, there is a feeling of calm anticipation that only exist for a few moments between the Was and the Will.

These are my pet rocks I picked up in Norway a few years back. I like to think they are dwelling in a cave here, because that’s what you do in caves. And there may even be a troll sleeping somewhere nearby. I like trolls. Not the internet variety!

Anyway a friend told me that they didn’t like puns about stones. My sediment exactly! the one on the left, Apollo, is the shy one, I think he wishes he was a little boulder. Did I mention I picked these guys up quite cheap? They were on shale. But I do like them, I never take them for granite. Though I did make the mistake of mentioning to send them home once, they looked petrified! They forgave me though and we started with a clean slate , and now have a plutonic relationship :)

Happy new week all

As it is so often the case, beautiful motifs are difficult to achieve. I found this beautiful Apollo butterfly above Lake Lungern (Canton Obwalden) on an extremely steep slope. That I could photograph it so close was probably due to a cloud that covered the sun. I had observed before that these butterflies fly less without sunshine and like to sit down. But maybe this is only my subjective impression...

(Parnassius apollo)

In Herculane Resort, Romania

After the conquest of Dacia by the Romans, Hercules baths were built. Herculane Spa resort is one of the few Roman baths which has kept the original function until today.

During over 160 years of Roman dominion, Hercules baths became known throughout the empire.

The cult of Hercules was deeply rooted in the conscience of the Romans. He represented the perfect balance of physical strength and spiritual creative energy.

Later, during the Austrian occupation, the baths were used frequently by administrators and solders. Here is the women's bath, also called Venus Bath. Apollo Baths museum opened recently and needs more serious restoration.

Shot at the HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON

.

According to the ancient Greek myth, Apollo mocked Eros, who decided to take some revenge on the God of music, poetry and the arts, so he shot him with the golden arrow of passionate love, while he shot the nymph Daphne with the arrow of hate.

Apollo pursued Daphne who ran away from him. When he finally reached her, she begged her father Peneus to have the Earth take her in so as to escape the embrace of the passionate God. She was so turned to a gorgeous plant, taking root in the ground, the plant Laurel. Apollo was heartbroken but swore to hold her forever, wear her on his head, hence the poets and artists were crowned with laurel leaves, φύλλα Δάφνης.

Apollo rendered her evergreen, her leaves never decaying.

This is a copy of the famous sculpture by the Italian sculptor Bernini. Daphne is turning into the laurel tree, as Apollo is touching her.

It is also one of the statues decorating the gorgeous HANGING GARDENS OF BABYLON palace on sl.

The apollo butterfly is the largest butterfly in Germany and unfortunately also the most endangered one. It is classified as critically endangered. There are only some very small isolated populations left. Reasons for the massive decline is again loss and destruction of habitat and the use of herbicides in agriculture. Photographing these beautiful butterflies was long on my bucket list. I really hope that the conservation measures will bring this unique butterfly back from the brink of extinction.

Office building, built in 1939. Architect: Dirk Roosenburg.

(Wp).

One of three waterfalls on Rattling Run. This was my first time here. I only made it to the first waterfall this time, but I will be back soon.

If you make the hike, access via Rock Furnace Trail. Take the trail down the beaten path until you reach a random park bench. Make a right at the park bench and follow the lower trail. It's very rocky/difficult to navigate with handheld gear. Trekking poles and a secure backpack with your gear will get you there with ease. Waterproof / water resistant boots suggested.
