The race is locally called 'Abeja negra de Canarias' and is related to African not European populations as was demonstrated by the genetic analysis of de la Rúa & al. (2001). Link see below photo of hives above.

Shown here visiting a Kickxia urbanii flower. This has been the single incidence of insect visit I noticed on this common plant in a fortnight! I would be surprised if the bee successfully accessed the nectar deep down in the long spur!
