Taken on Carcass Island, Falklands during our cruise to the Falklands Islands, South Georgia and Antarctic Peninsula. They nest in burrows and were generally not near the water unless they wandered off. They showed no fear of people and one can only hope that these areas remain pristine. We were told that we could not get too close to the penguins but they were free to wander anywhere. Sometimes they did come close, but they had the right-of-way!

The selfie was accidental or at least, unintentional, when I went inside this house to adjust something with my remote in my hand... and then I decided that I didn't hate it... and while I generally prefer to cut my head off in photos and shoot only my feet, I kind of like this because it is me, in one of my favorite places.... doing what I do ... windows and props. Kind of my home away from home. (I guess combing my hair would have been an improvement... but it was drizzling, and I was wet... and just trying to finish up and go... home.)
BIG BIRD in a small body.
These little guys are smaller than your thumb, but seem to have NO FEAR! Huge birds like Herons and Egrets run for their lives, if they happen to notice you can see them, a half mile away.
Yet when I spot these tiny little birds almost anywhere they couldn't care less if you see them or not. In fact sometimes they become so curious about what you're up too, the will come land on a branch right next to your head so close there's no way your camera can even focus on them. Some times even Hummingbirds will do that, almost willing to land on your nose to get a good look.
While even flocks of thousands of geese or ducks will scramble for their lives if you merely drive by in a truck a quarter mile away. What's up with that?

I like to see a flying osprey anywhere, but I have a special affinity for seeing them fly by the wooded shores of the lakes and rivers that serve as their summer homes here in central NC.
O wildlife photography deity, forgive us our trespasses (like stressing an animal a bit longer than we should for a photo) and grant us our osprey treepasses!
Firstly, I want to point out that whilst I have been 'lucky' enough to have had some very close encounters with Short-eared Owls recently, NOT ONCE HAVE I FELT OR HAD THE NEED TO CLIMB OVER FENCES NOR TO TRESPASS ON PRIVATE LAND IN ORDER TO DO SO. It seems some people are willing to do anything to get the photograph though sadly, giving photographers a bad name in the process. This sort of behaviour is likely to move-on any owl that may be present anywhere.
I had to get down particularly low in the grass for this one.

We are still here, just not going anywhere interesting or taking many photos. I've bathed and groomed the girls this week, Evie & Margo have had a light trim, Margo not yet, only paws & face. She's good at being bathed now & getting used to the hair dryer, makes life easier :)
I spent several dawns at a location formerly known as a set of sewage lagoons, recently rechristened as a conservation area. I have stopped now, mostly because a number of species have recently fledged young or are about to have them, and I have no interest in stressing the birds. Because of their hidden and shoreline-placed nests, and their exposure to Hawks and Herons and a number of land-based predators, these birds have enough trouble and my plunking myself down in the middle of it all seems contrary to my views about the relationship between photographer and subject.
A few weeks ago, however, I had a lot of fun observing the shorebirds that had arrived here. I know lots of people do not experience Killdeer as shorebirds, but that is how they live and behave here (as the French name indicates, they are in the Plover family). This bird was not alone in marching up and down the shoreline, pulling all manner of insects from the water and the mud below it. Based on the level of hunting and socializing, the Killdeer enjoy this habitat.
I try to arrive before the light, and then settle down on the edge of the water. The Killdeer were in the process of selecting mates, and seemed unconcerned by my presence. Anywhere from ten to twenty were in the wetland at any one time, and they frequently flew to the other connected cells in what was, as I mentioned, sewage lagoons.
The primary compositional challenge I have (assuming the birds arrive each spring) with this and other contained wetlands is the reflection on the water. I liked this image in part because the bird is pointed toward open reflection of the sky, leaving the small area of reflected trees behind the bird. I liked that effect. I also like the debris at the bird’s feet, and how it interacts with the water.
The flowers are smaller now and only a couple of buds. Nearly finished. 40c/104.6F today. Not going anywhere. Hope the veg don’t get burnt to a chrisp.

Dutch cheese farmers traditionally brought their cheeses to the market square in town to sell. Teams (vemen) of official guild cheese-porters (kaasdragers), identified by differently coloured straw hats associated with their forwarding company, carried the farmers' cheese on barrows, which typically weighed about 160 kilograms. Buyers then sampled the cheeses and negotiated a price using a ritual system called handjeklap in which buyers and sellers clap each other's hands and shout prices. Once a price is agreed, the porters carry the cheese to the weighing house (Waag), and scale of their company.
