Antique Ted (Ant for short) was jolly pleased when Red moved in. He had been feeling very lonely sitting in his big old chair by himself. I first met Red at an antique market (very appropriate). We instantly hit it off, so she was very happy to come home with me. When she and Ant met it was love at first sight.

I had been seeing holes in the ground for days but couldn't find a single cicada. Yesterday, I found the first molted exoskeleton on a tree. By the light of the moon on May 17th and into the early morning hours of May 18th, the nymphs began crawling from their holes in the earth and up the trunks of trees. I observed hundreds of them clinging to the bark or tree leaves, slowly transforming to their adult bodies. Some I observed had deformed or incomplete wings or a missing leg. Others were surrounded by hungry ants, as they molted and were voraciously devoured. This is only the beginning....

The ants were busy working this goldenrod in the evening, I wonder if they were hunting aphids?

In a gerbera daisy. I believe that the ant is approaching the aphid here for a taste of that sweet honeydew..,,
