Ants work together to transport their food

This image really has quite a bit going on in it if you are an ant. This guy looks like a circus performer on this loosely hanging batch of flowers on this dandelion. For post-processing info, check out my short blog at www.digitalladysyd.com/?p=4695.

A throwback photo, taken in 2013 in Belize, which was my long-overdue first-ever trip to a tropical forest. This is an army ant soldier (Eciton hamatum) locked onto my left index finger. These soldier caste individuals have large mandibles that are great for chomping vertebrate enemies (in this case, a photographer), but useless for feeding themselves -- they actually have to be fed by the smaller, less-armed workers. By the way, if the mandibles aren't enough, they can also sting. According to Alex Wild (the entomologist and photographer who was one of the instructors for this photo trip to Belize, and who "gave" me this army ant finger-decoration), this genus of ants is also interesting for its small, globular eyes; the genus is descended from a subterranean, blind ancestor, and have actually re-evolved eyesight. Fascinating creatures.

Leaf cutter ants are basically tiny farmers—they cut up leaves and haul them back home to grow their own food from fungus.

Captured while hiking in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.

Believe these to be birch trees and I have always loved the irregularities of the bark. While trying for a pic, I notice an ant has managed to photo bomb my pic.

Ants not on a mirror. Decided to try a diffusing surface to put some honey on (piece of plastic milk bottle) - gives a much kinder light than a mirror

Maybe Camponotus sericeiventris?

Found on trailside vegetation. One of the researchers at the reserve had baited the vegetation with urine to attract leps. This beauty was drawn in.

Water dragon by the pond

Australia is fighting, and losing, a battle against the Fire Ant invasion brought in on goods from overseas. Recently an infestation was found in a couple of places in NSW and a dead Fire Ant was found in Tasmania. This destructive species would add both to the huge environmental woes of our native species but also to our love of backyards and BBQ's. Here's hoping we put enough resources into the fight but the ants have several advantages.

On a better note and of interest in that it shows how nature can eventually find some solutions to our horrendous record of introduction of pest species. Can you see? There’s a little ant climbing up to the bright flower, and since I clicked this on a Monday morning, here goes the picture with this title!
