The theme for Smile on Saturday for the 6th of June is “earrings”, so I chose this pair of Regency ebony backed ivory cameo earrings.
These came into my possession from my maternal Grandmother. They were her mother’s before her, her mother’s before that and her mother’s before her at least. I estimate that these earrings are from around the Regency period between 1811 and 1820. They are carved ivory profiles on an ebony black background. The yellowing of the ivory is a sign of its advanced age, and their finer detail has been worn by many hands touching them over the centuries: not least of all mine. As a child, I used to use them as miniature pictures on the mantles of the fireplaces of my miniature tableaux I used to set up and play with. I named them Flora and Fauna when my Grandmother told me that they were classical profiles of Roman Goddesses. Flora is on the right and is my favourite. Fauna, with a lightly sterner look is on the left.
Today they sit in one of my curio cabinets, and now that I have had a reason to photograph them, perhaps they will one day turn up in one of my miniature tableaux photographs that I take as an adult, sitting on a fireplace mantle.

The Victorian era is undoubtedly the most influential and influential era of antique jewelry and real estate. As with most real estate jewelry, the era is dominated by the British monarch, in this case Alexandrina Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Empress of India, 1837. -1901. There are 3 periods in this era. In the first place, the first Romanesque period, characterized by traditions, natural patterns in gold and silver, transparent stones that are only used during the day and colored stones at night. The second was the period of great mourning that coincided with the death of Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert Concort. He died in December 1861 of typhoid fever, which was later misdiagnosed, and was actually a type of progressive cancer. Victoria was devastated by the loss, even with rumors of her affair with Irish actress Nellie Clifden. Victoria's mourning period included large dark, dark, and spectacular jewels with plenty of black, jet, amethyst, garnet, and gold onyx. This lasted until 1880, when the aesthetic period of jewelry began. The later Victorians used more complex and feminine patterns and returned to the natural, including many floral and light blue patterns with more decadent stones such as sapphire, ruby, zircon and, of course, diamonds that lasted until the turn of the century. The Victorian era of jewelry spanned many movements around the world, including revivals, such as movements in Etruscan and Egyptian design, as well as Art Nouveau and the crafts that led to the early 20th century.

These elegant antique earrings date from the 1920s or 30s and both are signed Czechoslovakia. The unusual crown style settings are made of antiqued brass filigree leaves. The large center stone is hand cut, faceted Aquamarine glass.
This large glass stone is prong set and is about 3/8" wide. Above the large stone are 5 smaller chatons, all hand cut and prong set as well. The earrings are screw backs and the old brass is in excellent condition with no dirt, blackening or greening. The brass has a lovely old patina from age. The glass stones are in excellent condition as well. All of the stones are present, original, clear and scratch free.
The large stones once had gold foil backs and as it has worn off, light is now allowed to pass through, making the center stone even more brilliant. The earrings are rather petite and measure 3/4" tall x 7/8" wide. The brass screw back wires were hand made and are not uniform in shape, as is the case with almost all Czech earrings this old. The screw back mechanisms are in perfect working order.

In the 1940s, Czechoslovakia set out to prove that they could create colored crystals that rivaled the quality of Austria. With bold determination, these earrings are truly off the chart for a signed Czech pair. Name the color, and it is here !
The earrings are a combination of hand faceted crystals in emerald, marquise and chaton cuts. All of the crystals are prong set in brass metal settings. This eye popping flower design are earrings Czech designers did not want you to miss! The brilliance of these old lead crystals is astonishing!
The earrings are brass screw backs and they measure 1" wide. All of the large crystals are open backed with gold painted backs. All of the crystals are original and present. I have examined these earrings repeatedly under a loupe and I am amazed that I cannot find any chips or facet wear. The earrings are perfectly clean and there is no grime or greening to the brass.
These earrings look as perfect as the day they were made!
