Millennium Bridge, London, UK

Spanning the River Thames, the Millennium Bridge is a pedestrian crossing that connects St. Paul’s Cathedral with Tate Modern.

It was the winning design of a collaboration between Arup Group, Foster + Partners, and sculptor Anthony Caro.

The Millennium Bridge, officially known as the London Millennium Footbridge, is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Thames in London, England, linking Bankside with the City of London. Londoners nicknamed the bridge the "Wobbly Bridge" after pedestrians experienced an alarming swaying motion. The bridge was closed later on opening day and, after two days of limited access, for almost two years while modifications were made to eliminate the motion. It reopened in February 2002.

The Explorer's book sculpture is a work that is located in front of the library building of the University of Deusto in the vicinity of the Padre Arrupe footbridge, on the Abandoibarra promenade.

It is the work of the British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro (1924-2013), an artist who represents in it an open book made up of remains of steel anchors, recalling that the docks were located in this area.

The sculpture, a mixture of steel and concrete, is also, in Caro's personal style, a symbiosis between the figurative and the abstract. Its dimensions are 1.63 x 1.90 x 2.05 meters and it was placed on December 2, 2008, with the presence of the sculptor.

Explorer's books is one of the works acquired by Bilbao Ría 2000 as part of the plan for the acquisition of works of art to decorate the Abandoibarra promenade as a new leisure area for Bilbao in the 21st century.

The sculptor Anthony Caro managed to become one of the innovative artistic figures of contemporary sculpture and to be, together with Richard Serra and Eduardo Chillida, one of the most outstanding abstract sculptors of his time. Caro, on the day the sculpture was placed, expressed his satisfaction for the location of his work in the vicinity of Chillida's work, Begirari IV.

A section of Denys Lasdun's mid-60s neo-ziggurat terracing, seen through the steel sculpture 'Goodwood Steps,' made in 1996 by Anthony Caro (1924-2013). The enormous work by Caro is in ziggurat form. The Lasdun is Grade II* listed and still radical for Norfolk.

" But I don't think that sculpture belongs in everyday life like a table does, or like a chair. "

The Millennium Footbridge, which links the Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe Theatre to St Paul's Cathedral and the financial district, is the first new bridge to have been built over the Thames in London since Tower Bridge in 1854. It is a fabulous place to take a stroll and a very worthy addition to London's eclectic skyline. Southbank, London. April 2006.

"The Millennium Bridge springs from a dynamic collaboration between engineering, art and architecture to provide the first new Thames crossing since Tower Bridge. A shallow suspension structure, it is designed to allow pedestrians unimpeded views up and down river. A thin ribbon of steel by day, it is illuminated to form a blade of light at night. Co-architects: Sir Anthony Caro and Ove Arup & Partners."

Great experiment on how to fit evolution theory in a house of God. The result came to me as sacred art connecting people. Also discovering our place in the world. Caro describes humans as primitive and trees as refined. Amazing work of art.
