This is another shot in the series of delightful pictures that I got out of Tulip gardens, Skagit Valley WA. Take pictures in a tulip festival is very challenging because there are 1000s of pictures already taken and you have to make sure that you are not adding to the already existing pool of pictures. So I took only pictures that I thought were not commonly seen in a tulip festival set. Enjoy and let me know your comments. See the entire series here.

So after the spring obsession, I went back to home studio and took some smoke shots again. I tried a couple of different things today. First to shoot steam instead of smoke. Steam unlike smoke is not thick enough so it produces a streak that is not very hard or I should say full of grains. So poured the hot water away and inserted some incense balls inside the cups. These balls were already lit before I dropped them into the cups. As usual the cups and the smoke or different pictures.
Strobist Info:
I used a Canon 580 EX II at 1/8th power and 80mm zoom. I used a Canon 100mm macro lens on a Canon T1i body. I also used snoot to direct the light on the smoke. The smoke was later inverted and colorized in Photoshop. To see the detail setup and how to do this shot? go here.

I was able to make the two drops collide with each other and form this pattern. I could not get this manually done even after going through so many different exercises. Finally I had to succumb and get myself a time machine to do this. I'll write more about the set up and the time machine and the drip kit in days to come. Keep coming back for more droplet shots.
Ever since I saw the "Light Fare at the Bar" post from Strobist website, I wanted to try this. So I mailed my mentor Marv Heston and asked him if he will be interested in trying this. He was immediately ready for some experimentation and we set out to reproduce a similar effect. I should tell you how much fun we had doing this.. Read more with additional pictures

I have been thinking about taking a picture like this for a long time and finally got a chance to do it last weekend. This was taken during my vacation to Olympics. The weather turned out to be awful making us stay indoors most of the times.

I had an opportunity to visit Palouse one last time before I leave US and move back home. If you had been following my photographic journey, you might very well know that Palouse is one of my favorite places to visit to take pictures. Pictures from both of my previous trips have been very well received by a lot of viewers. So I would not want to let go of this chance of photographing the harvest season. The initial plan was for me to drive alone. When I was talking about this to fellow photographers Siddharth and Vinayak, they showed immediate interest to go with me. I was excited to have a photography company. Vin later put a FB message and asked for models to join our trip. Read more with additional pictures here - A MUST SEE
In a quest to make the landscape shot something different, I carried pieces of cloth that I can somehow get into my composition. It worked out pretty good. I have a funny story behind this. I was so preoccupied with getting the shot right that I missed where the cloth fell. I was searching all over for almost 10 minutes until someone from our group helped find it for me. I was worried if I did not find it and if the cloth got stuck in the tractor while harvesting it would have been an unnecessary pain. Glad I was able to find it.
I'm back again to Eastern Washington - My favorite place to photograph in Washington State. Hoping for a wonderful time tomorrow.

This questions is still lingering in my head. Although my main interest is to come up with some creative conceptual pictures, I love doing landscape, macro, portraits, weddings, street and experimental photography. I wish I could tell what type of photographer I'm and I feel jealous when I see photographers who have decided this. At the end of the day I love what I do and I feel time will be eventually give me an answer. Since its too early for me to really decide on one thing. Do you also feel the same ?
PS: I know there is a flare in the pic, but I like it in this context. This shot was taken on top of Steptoe Butte.

As promised here’s my setup details for pictures of objects coming out of water. I’m going to let a secret out at the end. Read more of the secret with additional pictures.
Strobist Info:
This is a very basic setup until you do the magic in post processing. I used a Canon 580 EX II shot through an umbrella from the floor pointed towards the fish tank that was placed on a table. Behind the table and just below it I used another flash pointed to the background which can be any color. I used white mostly and for some shots red as you can see here. I pointed my camera towards the surface of the water from an angle of 45 deg. Now I used remote triggers for the flashes and also my camera. The remote trigger has a 2 second timer and I would switch it on and insert the object into water.

I'm still a little obsessed with the blossoms. May be because of the inner happiness that the worse weather is behind us and more sunny days are ahead of us. I shot some more blossoms again today and updated the series here.

I have been thinking about this shot for a long time and finally found out a way to make these smoke rings. I'm still not satisfied with the way the rings turned out but this is good for the first try here. Once I can consistently get good rings I will write about the setup to get the perfect rings. For now enjoy the pic and let me know your comments.
Strobist Info:
For the train picture I used a Canon 580 EX II at 1/8th power and 80mm zoom shot through the umbrella from subjects right side. I used a Canon 100mm macro lens on a Canon T1i body. For the smoke picture read detail setup and how to do this shot? go here.

Another tea pot picture. Really having a creativity block. Have to come up with something new. Until then you guys have to put up with my smoke collection. I did not go with white back drop this time for a change.
trobist Info:
This picture was a little tricky because of the Pot's ceramic surface. I used a 580 EX II shot through an umbrella and placed close to the pot pointing from the top. I placed a reflective white sheet on the other side to fill the shadows. I used Canon T1i and Canon 70-200mm f2.8 lens for the pot and canon 100mm macro for the smoke shot and later merged them in PS.

after making it to the front page of Flickr. Man after so many attempts it feels so good making it to the front page.

Ok coming to this picture here. Tried something with the dragon toy. It was a challenge to keep his mouth open. Because you have to press the latch at the bottom to make his mouth wide open like that so I used a transparent rubber band and wound it around the tail and then later cloned it out in PS. My wife tied a thread around and suspended the toy in the air which helped a lot. Again this is two pictures merged in PS.

I'm trying to get consistent and better smoke rings from my setup. Here's some more smoke rings. As promised I'll let you all know how I got the rings when I get better at it. Until then keep visiting back and fav the pic if you like it.
Strobist Info:
For the bottle picture I used a Canon 580 EX II at 1/8th power and 28mm zoom shot through the umbrella from above the subject to avoid glare. I used a Canon 100mm macro lens on a Canon T1i body. For the smoke picture read detail setup and how to do this shot? go here.

This is a straight out of the camera shot. There is no editing involved. 3rd day into the vacation and had some great shots from Slot Canyon today.
The old lady in the pictures went near the light and gave this pose for just a little bit. She did not stay there for more than 10 secs because she was obviously in the frame for lot of photographers. I loved getting her into the frame. Made it more interesting than just with light streak alone.
I'm still on the road and will be uploading only rarely when I find a chance and some time. I have so many pictures to go through and edit when I get back next week.

Hi, I have fell in love with kids and baby photography for the number of different expressions they provide us. it makes photographing them a piece of cake. The cute little model here is Saanvi for whom I did a portrait session with her parents. They loved the series of pictures that I provided them.

This is one of the pictures from my recent wedding assignment with friend and mentor Jennifer Tai. Its a Filipino wedding and I love the money dance in it. I tried a high key effect here and you can see the entire collection here.
This is another strobist work. There were few lilies at home and I wanted to take a picture of them but wanted to be a little different so I shot it so many different ways and finally decided to use storbes. With strobes I was trying to light the background and the lily with different background colors. I was still not satisfied. I wanted something really different, so thought of snooting the light from below(behind the lily) and filing the upper part just a ted to give some light and got this glowing effect. Please leave your valuable comments and let me know what you liked and what you did not about this picture.
Strobist Info:
To understand this imagine the picture upside down. I was using a 580 EX II through an umbrella to fill the top of the flower. I used a ebay flash to shoot from the bottom just behind the flower to put enough light/glow to the flower. I was using a Canon 100mm Macro lens on a Canon T1i body for this picture.

Trying to get a good grasp of the droplet shots. I played with the time machine some more. Today's trail session was an eye opener on how Black affects the light source and How the angle of the flash in relation to the camera makes a difference. I will come up with a detailed post on how to do this in the days to come. Until then I'll try to improvise on what I have so a far. Your comments welcomed !!!
I have been pre visualizing this shot for a long time now. I remember seeing a similar shot somewhere in a magazine ad but don't exactly where though. So I asked my friend to bring a story book along with and got this shot. I did not have a lot of chances here since baby Sarah was a little grumpy and was not in her good moods today. So I did the best I could.
Strobist Info:
I used a canon 580 EX II with a diffuser which would put light only forward and not backward since it has a black cover at the bottom and a diffuser on the top. This would avoid the spill light. Also i set the power to 1/64th of the second. and placed between dad's legs and placed the book so that it would cover it. I dragged the shutter speed a little slower to 1/60th of the second so I could get some ambient light. When editing I did not like the clutter in the background so I vignetted the entire pic and had only dad and daughter lit. I want to give a little bit of environment but I did not like the environment. I used a canon T2i and 70-200mm f2.8 L lens.

I was talking about the smoke pictures. Went back and did some smoke pictures last night. The setup for smoke pictures does not really take more than 5 minutes anymore. This is something I could take even if you wake me up in the middle of the night and ask me to take one. Here are the steps that I always follow to make smoke pictures. Also take a look at my entire smoke collection if you have not already.
Please let me know if you have any questions and I might be able to help you out.
I'm having total fun with these droplets. Did some cool research and played with different colors. Here's the entire collection of the droplet shots. Take a look at it and let me know your comments.

This is another picture from eastern washington. This picture is an evidence for how Photography has changed the way I look at things. This line of trees were on the side of the road while I was driving through a high way. As soon as I saw the line of trees I wanted to take a pic of them forming a enclosure. Little did I know that I was able to see a Barn through them. An icing in the cake was the cars passing by the road. So I thought why not put on of them into the shot. I ended with the above shot.
