Amy Spanos started a project to promote more awareness to self-harming. I am an ex-IV drug user and an alcoholic in recovery, so I think I can understand what it must be like to self-harm. I work with many young women in the program who also self-harm and continue to be unable to stop abusing and cutting themselves. I beat myself up everyday in my mind and sometimes I cry for no apparent reason, just because it seems like I am not good enough. The girls I work with say that they experience the same types of feelings.
I can never see how much my friends and family love me. It takes me listening to other people in the program and seeing their joy for me to realize that they love me too. If it was up to me, somedays I'd think the whole world would be better off if I wasn't there. And there are other days when I can see the truth unobscured by self-pity. It's hard to get out of it :) Seems like a roller coaster ride, but I've been sober 4 years since November 20th, and it's a much better roller coaster ride in here than it is out there :)
I encourage you to add something to the project, even if you aren't doing a 365, it's good to be reminded of how amazing and special we really are :)
