Crossing the Aoyu Bei (Carp's Backbone)
Huangshan, China
You must conquer your fear of heights, or at least ignore it, to experience the beauty of Huanghsan. What its mountains lack in overall height -- the highest reaches only 1,850m (6,115') -- they make up for in unparalleled steepness.
At 1,810m (5,937'), The Tiandu Feng, "Heavenly Capital Peak", is the third highest peak. It has quite the views, however to get there you must first ascend and pass the Aoyu Bei, "The Carp's Backbone", a thing ridge with sections dropping off on both sides pretty much all the way to the bottom. The rope railing provides little reassurance, and just when you start celebrating your crossing, you realize you will have to cross it again to get back down.
Halfway across the backbone, my friend Elaine froze and screamed. Her altophobic husband fared better but spent the time coining new names for it, like, "Shit-Your-Pants Pass". We made it, but like clockwork, whenever we stopped to collect our breath and commend our bravery in Huangshan, we'd be passed by a tour group of old Chinese women wearing flats.
For some armchair traveling, there's a neat site that has 360 panorama movies of some World Heritage sites. www.world-heritage-tour.org/. The movie for Huangshan is interesting but looks to be taken from one of the less intriguing areas. Although, if you drag your mouse down and spin it around you'll get a sense of the dizziness some of the trails induced. Or you might just vomit from vertigo.

Oh glorious! I was so excited about taking today's picture I couldn't sleep! I hope I didn't disappoint. I was a little rushed, and still have started getting ready for work because I had to run to Target to buy some stuff for today. I don't own any dresses, are you kidding me?! Well, I do now. Oh, and those are supposed to be ANKLE socks. I have no idea whose ankles are that freakin big, but ya know.
So, first and foremost-please pray for my friend's daughter, Lily. She had to have two blood transfusions today. I'm sure she'll be fine, but a few extra prayers can't hurt. Secondly, I was rushed because as I was pulling out of my driveway I noticed a woman and her daughter on the side of the road. Like a retard I stopped and asked if they needed help (one day someone is going to have that butcher knife and get ME with it. Oh well). So I drove them to the gas station because he car was out of gas, and we are not anywhere in walking distance! So THEN I went to Target, got my stuff, hurried home, changed and went to set up. It has been POURING the rain here. So I had on a pair of stupid house shoes getting ready to tote this stuff to the side of the house. As soon as I turned the corner, there stands my landlord. I have on this dress, a big coat, a cut up teddy bear, equipment, flowers, and a butcher knife....
"Hey um, going to take some pictures?"
"Oh yep, thankfully it's stopped raining..." Smiling...please don't look at my knife...
"Oh well, stay out of the mud..." He stares at me for another second..."You're nuts ya know." And he walks off...

Yes, yes I am. And I also hate Valentine's Day. I'm not bitter about being single. I'm a hopeless romantic at heart. I just LOATH the idea of this stupid Hallmark holiday aimed at sucking the money out of poor men who are trying desperately to stay out of trouble with their wives, girlfriends (or both). It's ridiculous. If you can't effn show me you love me every other day of the week, don't bother today. Silly Teddy...
