Since the tribal tattoos I did on my hand were apparently pretty popular around here, I took the design idea one step further. Since I'm from the northwest, I chose to make this a mule deer instead of everyone's favorite whitetail. If the left antler had a third spike and there were no brow-tines on this guy, he'd look just like Mr. Skull. :D

Really do wish I didn't have to use the "Respect Copyright" thing on this. But I've recently had some issues with morons here on Flickr stealing my work.

NOTE: If I see you wearing this tattoo without my explicit permission, I have full right to walk up to and punch you in the face. Hard. Very hard.

JUST BECAUSE I'M A GIRL DOES NOT MEAN I HAVE TO BE NICE ALL THE TIME. I've punched people with enough force to split skin and break knuckles in the past. You DO NOT want it to happen to you.

Done by Jesse Tuesday at his shop, Tuesday Tattoo in San Francisco- www.jessetuesday.com -Jesse is amazingly easy going and a 3 hour session goes quickly, if not painlessly..

This little creature is from a medieval drawing and was Jesse's idea. I had told him i felt a medieval illuminated manuscrips/botanical feeling would be good and the short tailed weasel turned out to be a great way to bring that feeling. Interestingly, we were not sure what it was when we added it! In most medieval circles a weasel on you would not symbolize anything but nastiness-a dirty little creature that was believed to conceive through the mouth and give birth through the ear. However, they were also considered healers and determined hunters. It also brought the tattoo to life a bit and I think illustrates the whole idea of protection, healing and shelter I feel the blackberry embodies so well.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest brought me many encounters with blackberries, especially Rubus discolor, that terrible weed everyone loves to hate. I love the memories of the long hot hours we would spend picking the berries and trying our best not to be poked. We would take the fruit home and Mom would make jam and sauce enough to last 'till next season, and I'd nurse my injuries. So, with that background, and a love of gardening with a permaculture bent, 6 years of thinking about it finally led me to this. Permaculturists look at the blackberry as a plant that protects health and restores injured land. it is a tough wall that keeps out enemies, but it also shelters weaker creatures and young trees as they grow. It also feeds everyone with abandon! Even those it keeps out! Fun symbolism I can use, and a plant that reminds me of good times.

I may add the quote from Hippocrates later: Life is short, the art long, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult.
