Now common in winter in southern Ontario, American Goldfinches were once rare here in winter. The increase in wintering goldfinches is linked to the tremendous rise in bird feeding. In winter, goldfinches are inconspicuous and much less vocal than in summer, usually giving only low te-te-te notes.

• While in their winter habitat, Chipping Sparrows are non-stop eating machines. Each one must consume over two pounds of seeds through the course of the winter to survive. With an average body weight of only 13 grams, this means that Chipping Sparrows consume over 70 times their own weight in seeds each winter.
• Most birds molt all of their body feathers once or twice a year, the Chipping Sparrow follows the same schedule except that it may also replace the feathers on its face and throat up to six times a year.

LAGARTO OVERO
El Lagarto Overo tiene las extremidades posteriores largas, la cabeza prolongada y las escamas dorsales de forma ovalada y muy pequeñas.
El cuerpo puede alcanzar una longitud de aproximadamente 400 mm. o más (distancia tomada entre hocico y cloaca), si tomamos en cuenta la larga cola esta longitud puede ser casi el doble. La cabeza es prolongada y comprimida lateralmente. También presenta dos grandes pliegues gulares (región próxima a la garganta).
En cuanto a la coloración general de esta especie, la misma es oscura con manchas transversales blancas. Su patrón de coloración comprende: la cabeza y el dorso oliváceos, a veces este último puede ser muy oscuro y presentar bandas transversales negras que se extienden desde la nuca hasta la punta de la cola. En las extremidades pueden observarse manchas redondeadas blanquecinas. La zona ventral es amarillenta con bandas negras transversales. En la zona gular se presentan manchas negras irregulares y en la superficie ventral de la cola bandas negras transversales. Los juveniles al nacer son de color verde claro metálico y brillantes.
