The Eurasian spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia), or common spoonbill, is a wading bird of the ibis and spoonbill family Threskiornithidae. The genus name Platalea is from Latin and means "broad", referring to the distinctive shape of the bill, and leucorodia is from Ancient Greek leukerodios "spoonbill", itself derived from leukos, "white" and erodios "heron". In England it was traditionally known as the "shovelard", a name later used for the northern shoveler.

Now common in winter in southern Ontario, American Goldfinches were once rare here in winter. The increase in wintering goldfinches is linked to the tremendous rise in bird feeding. In winter, goldfinches are inconspicuous and much less vocal than in summer, usually giving only low te-te-te notes.

• While in their winter habitat, Chipping Sparrows are non-stop eating machines. Each one must consume over two pounds of seeds through the course of the winter to survive. With an average body weight of only 13 grams, this means that Chipping Sparrows consume over 70 times their own weight in seeds each winter.

• Most birds molt all of their body feathers once or twice a year, the Chipping Sparrow follows the same schedule except that it may also replace the feathers on its face and throat up to six times a year.

The male Northern Cardinal is perhaps responsible for getting more people to open up a field guide than any other bird. They’re a perfect combination of familiarity, conspicuousness, and style: a shade of red you can’t take your eyes off. Even the brown females sport a sharp crest and warm red accents. Cardinals don’t migrate and they don’t molt into a dull plumage, so they’re still breathtaking in winter’s snowy backyards. In summer, their sweet whistles are one of the first sounds of the morning. • Orioles are insect and fruit eaters. They usually stay hidden in the trees eating and singing their beautiful whistling notes. They can be drawn down from their perches with foods like orange slices, grape jelly, mealworms and nectar feeders.

Another common bird at spring time here in Ontario. The male Brown Headed Cow Bird has beautiful glossy feathers that glistens in the sun. Nature has however "blessed/cursed" this specie with a bad reputation though...I guess nature is nature‍♂️. See below.:👇

Mating season of brown-headed cowbirds takes place from March to April.

Brown-headed cowbirds are not monogamous birds. Both males and females mate with couple of different partners during the mating season.

Brown-headed cowbird is brood parasite. That means that female lays eggs inside the nests of 220 different species of birds instead of her own nest. Female produces 30 to 40 eggs during the nesting season and lays one egg per nest.Most hosts are not able to recognize foreign egg and they incubate it together with their own eggs. Brown-headed cowbird hatches after 10 to 12 days (usually before other chicks) and grows fast. It often eliminates other (smaller and more fragile) chicks from the nest to ensure more food for itself. Young brown-headed cowbird leaves the nest after 8 to 13 days, when it becomes oversized for the nest.

Yellow warbler is able to recognize the false egg but it is too small to remove it from the nest. It builds another nest on top of the existing one and lays new set of eggs all over again.

Many people are perplexed each spring by the sight of a cardinal attacking its reflection in a window, car mirror, or shiny bumper. Both males and females do this, and most often in spring and early summer when they are obsessed with defending their territory against any intruders. Birds may spend hours fighting these intruders without giving up. A few weeks later, as levels of aggressive hormones subside, these attacks should end (though one female kept up this behavior every day or so for six months without stopping).
