Ukrainian refugee cat

Michalovce (Slovakia) - All the NGOs are grouped all along the border of Ukraine to provide aid and assistance to refugees trying to escape the war. Animal protection associations, such as "Animals rescue" are not left out and are mobilized to care for and collect pets who are also victims of the conflict. Many fleeing Ukrainians did not want to abandon their companions and a veterinary unit is present in each transit camp. There, the majority of dogs and cats are fed and cared for free before returning to exile with their masters. But these associations also take in animals lost in panic. If their masters have disappeared they will be offered for adoption.

- The cat in the picture is pretty lucky. He is healthy. Her mistress was able to take her away when she fled the bombardments. The day the photo was taken, he had just been vaccinated.

TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Pima Animal Care Center is asking the public to provide foster and adoptive homes to relieve overcrowding after the shelter took in 288 dogs in the past seven days.

Monica Dangler, Director of Animal Services, said the overcrowding is due to the volume of dogs in the shelter, meaning dogs are staying at PACC longer.

“The longer the dogs stay here, the more stressed they become,” Dangler said. “High levels of stress put the dogs at risk of disease and behavioral decline, making it critical to get these dogs into homes quickly.”

PACC is also housing the impound of 37 dogs as part of a cruelty investigation pushing the current census to 496 dogs and 102 cats.

“PACC is in need of fosters, adopters, and rescue partners to help us help these dogs,” Dangler said. “Stepping up now can quite literally help save dogs’ lives.”

Pima Animal Care Center is open from noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. All pets are currently free to adopt, and a $20 licensing fee applies to adult dogs.

For those interested in fostering, PACC can provide needed supplies and performs all medical care. To foster, please come down to the shelter or sign up at this link. To view all available pets and services, please go to pima.gov/animalcare.

The Ukrainian refugee and her poodle

Michalovce (Slovakia) - Canine version of yesterday's photo which featured a cat. This refugee settled with her poodle in the Slovak town of Michalovce a few kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Her husband has enlisted in the Ukrainian army and she does not want to leave her country in case the geopolitical situation improves. She goes to see the transit camp veterinarian every day for her dog who has a skin disease. It seems that he was traumatized by the bombardments. A post-traumatic symptom in the words of the camp veterinarian. And like yesterday's cat, we must soon inject him with a booster vaccine.

A partnership is unfolding at the San Diego Zoo between primate keepers and the Zoo’s François’ langur monkeys. Animal care staff, using assisted-rearing techniques, are getting some unique help from the François’ langur monkey group to raise an endangered 7-week-old baby langur, named Chi (pronounced chee). The monkeys are actively assisting the primate team by periodically transferring the infant to keepers for feeding and playtime, and then taking him back when the activities are over. Animal care staff said this distinctive technique not only allows Chi to receive the care and nursing he needs, but also provides him the opportunity for a normal social structure as part of his family group.

Tschuna, the stunning Amur tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, has an incredible story that captures the hearts of visitors. Born in 2010 at Germany’s Halle Zoo, she was sadly rejected by her mother at birth. Fortunately, Tschuna was hand-reared by keepers, giving her the special care and attention she needed to thrive. In 2012, she arrived at YWP as part of the European Breeding Programme, which works to protect the critically endangered Amur tiger. Tschuna has become a symbol of resilience and a vital ambassador for tiger conservation. Her striking beauty and powerful presence are unforgettable, making her a favourite for wildlife photographers and animal lovers alike.

This striking portrait captures an Osprey, scientifically known as Pandion haliaetus, at the Avian Reconditioning Center in Apopka, Florida. The photograph zooms in on the bird's piercing eyes and formidable beak, features that make the Osprey a highly efficient fisher. The shallow depth of field effectively blurs the background, allowing the bird to take center stage and enabling the viewer to focus solely on its features.

As a photographer, getting this shot required patience and a keen understanding of the Osprey's movements. The lighting conditions were also optimal, highlighting the bird's distinct facial markings and the intricate textures of its feathers. This image is more than just a snapshot; it's a testament to the Osprey's adaptability and survival skills, qualities that make it a fascinating subject for wildlife photography.

Today, I watched two animal care staff members caring for the herd of bison in the wildlife preserve. One used a sprayer, aiming carefully with a stream of liquid. The other threw handfuls of something granular.

I will find out what they were doing. For now, I'm very curious.

This young man was trying to draw both giraffes to himself, log enough for his co-worker to run into the habitat to collect a fecal sample.

The giraffes may have been distracted by the lettuce, but my attention was on his tattoos. Even his employer is spelled out in ink.

Last August, for the second year in a row, I received an invitation from La Collina dei Conigli ONLUS to realize all the pictures for their new fundraising calendar.

La Collina dei Conigli (www.lacollinadeiconigli.net) is an Italian charity based in Monza, near Milan, which rescues rabbits, Guinea pigs, rats, mice and hamsters. Most of them come from laboratories, where they spent lives of sufferings as test subjects: this is the case, for example, of beautiful Clio, the New Zealand rabbit pictured above with volunteer Tiziana.

The main theme of 2014 Calendar was animals and humans, their hands in particular: lovely hands, finally, which cuddle and take care of all the animals homed at the centre, and which help them to recover their trust in humans.

This picture was chosen as the cover for the calendar (you can have a look at the other pages here: milano.repubblica.it/cronaca/2013/11/05/foto/conigli_e_ca...). It was a gorgeous experience to spend a weekend with all the lovely animals and volunteers of the Collina and I hope that the calendar will sell well, so that many funds can be raised to help all the rabbits & Co. saved by this charity. And I'm really happy to say that several pets pictured in the calendar have found a lovely home already, just like Clio, that after 4 years (she arrived in 2009) has finally found a family and a bunny companion :)

If you wish to know more about "La Collina dei Conigli ONLUS" and their priceless work, please have a look at www.lacollinadeiconigli.net or search for "La Collina dei Conigli ONLUS" on Facebook (www.facebook.com/collinadeiconigli?ref=stream). Minimum donation for one copy of the calendar is 10€ (plus shipping fees) and all the money will be used for animals in need. If you wish to purchase a copy, please contact promozioni[at]lacollinadeiconigli.net or lacollinadeiconiglionlus[at]gmail.com; thank you very much :)

This series of photos is about the monkeys of Vrindhavan. The special thing about this ancient city is that one can find is the number of monkeys more than the number of human population live there (most likely).
