December 2006 - Right angles don't occur in nature, do they?

I learned a lesson about shooting at angles. You have to be careful not to make some images TOO angular.
For this photo inspired by Duane Michals, I captured a black sunglass against a light circular table, with sunglasses creating an intentional shadow element. I chose to work in black and white to reference Michals' signature monochromatic style and his interest in creating enigmatic scenes.
The composition plays with geometric shapes—the round table, the circular object, and the angular shadows created by the sunglasses. Like Michals, I wanted to create a sense of visual narrative and ambiguity. The sunglasses in the foreground add a mysterious element, suggesting an unseen observer or questioning the nature of perception, which aligns with Michals' frequent exploration of reality versus illusion.
I was particularly inspired by how Michals uses everyday objects to create metaphysical narratives. In my image, the stark contrast between light and dark, along with the geometric interplay of shapes, aims to create a contemplative space that invites multiple interpretations. While Michals often includes handwritten text with his images, I chose to let the visual elements speak for themselves, focusing on the relationship between the objects and their shadows to suggest a story without explicitly telling one.

The Atlanta Botanical Garden has an indoor rain forest - these compound leaves are several feet long and the individual fronds are about 3 feet long. I loved the play of angles of the fronds and their shadows.
