Asia, Cambodia, Angkor Temples

Ta Prohm: One of the must visit temples among hundreds of Angkor temples. The trees growing out of the ruins are the most distinctive feature of Ta Prohm. It is left as it found so the visitors could get a glimpse how the ruins look like when it had found out. The restoration project team cleared the jungles and pathway so that people can walk around and they maintain it from further destruction. Most of the part left untouched.

Personally, I like this temple as it gives the feel of past and how it look like when a city that was one of the biggest when its glorious time, gets abandoned and lost in the jungles. What make those people to leave that place all of a sudden ? There are a lot assumptions but still the exact reason is unknown. It got hidden in the jungles for centuries!

Angkor - Tha Prohm

Angkor - Tha Prohm

Unlike most Angkorian temples, Ta Prohm has been left in much the same condition in which it was found: the photogenic and atmospheric combination of trees growing out of the ruins and the jungle surroundings have made it one of Angkor's most popular temples with visitors.

The five towers of Angkor Wat rise on three levels around a large central shrine. The complex is surrounded by thick walls and a wide moat that symbolize the boundaries of the world and the ocean. The view of the temple from the end opposite the moat, with the towers reflected on the waters, is impressive.

The Bayon is a well-known and richly decorated Khmer temple at Angkor in Cambodia.

The Bayon's most distinctive feature is the multitude of serene and smiling stone faces on the many towers which jut out from the upper terrace.

When you are visiting it, it seems that you are being observed all the time for these mysterious faces.

This astonishing vegetation surrounds the Angkor's temples. It's really impressive when you are there. It explains that this area was absolutely forgotten during years.

Angkor was once the capital of the Khmer Empire from 9th to 15th centuries. The Khmer empire was one of the most prosperous and sophisticated kingdoms in the history of Southeast Asia, and its prosperity were expressed through a wide range of architecture. This city contains hundreds of temples. The population may have been over 1 million people. It was easily the largest city in the world until the Industrial Revolution. The city of Angkor was founded on political and religious ideas adapted from India, and the temples of Angkor were intended as a place of worship for the king and a way for him to ensure his immortality through identification with the Hindu gods.

In 15th Century, Khmer kingdom started falling. In 1431, Thais sacked the city. The king moved his capital to some other place. Everyone moved out and the city got abandoned. Slowly forest devoured it and got hidden from outside world for centuries. Why the people moved out from there, like that - no one knows exact reason but archaeologists make some assumptions. It was in 1863, French explorer, Henri Mouhot, publishes a journal about these temples in the forests which are only known to some locals and monks. Today's latest laser technology helped the archaeologists to find the 'lost city' and they are still working on it.

When someone walking here, he is not only seeing a temple but feeling the past and how it looks like when a city gets lost.
