Walking and looking. It's amazing what's just above eye level.

The British General Post Office held the monopoly on telephone services for the whole country, except Hull, until 1969.

With fewer people having landlines than before, I wonder what is under here.

This is a Coade stone that was removed from one of the last three remaining public dispensaries and placed above the door to the infirmary.

Coade stone is an interesting substance developed in the 18th century that consisted of clay, terracota, silicates and glass. It would have been molded and then fired in a kiln for several days to produce this fine relief. I believe it depicts the Good Samaritan tending to the man who had been set upon by robbers and left for dead by several passersby.

Early on Sunday. Nothing is moving. Silence. The city still sleeps.

This is a relatively modern rotary egg beater. This one was bought in 1962 by a lovely lady who gave it to me today - she is downsizing her kitchen and thought I might like it. Truth is, I have been looking for one for ages!

This device was invented by Willis Johnson, an African-American, in 1884. Read more, here:

Today's lunch was a soup of butternut squash, sweet potato, tomato, and garlic. I finished it with some grated cheese and basil leaves and black pepper.

We have been blanketed by gloomy nimbostratus clouds for days, and I needed some warmth, color and comfort today!

"What are you going to have for tea tonight?" my friend asked. Salad, I thought. Anchovy toasty, he suggested. And here's the result.

The anchovies were grilled and mixed with cream cheese marinaded in olive oil and pickling brine. The cucumber and carrots were pickled and the salad dressed with some thin mayo. An explosion of flavors.

And here is my new base again as the night draws in. I put a light behind it. It seems to have caused some interference that put the band across the picture. I'll have to find a different light source next time.

Tea today was broccoli, French beans, both on discount, with a tomato, in a light cheese sauce. Throw in an egg in the last couple minutes to bind a bit and provide some more protein. In the wok for 10 minutes all up. Finish with lemon juice and black pepper.

Quick, easy, and cheap.

Cook like a student and eat like a king.

After dinner a stroll in the evening sunshine brought me to this towns tree. The old English name cwic-beám or "quickbeam" has almost disappeared.

The berries must be cooked to remove toxins but make a wonderful bitter jelly that goes very well with game. Just in time for the grouse season which starts tomorrow!

This morning's kitchen. Happy days!

I'd call this the bridge to nowhere, but that's in Aotearoa New Zealand. The canal is still here, but it is silted up. All the same, it's a fine bit of stonemason's craftsmanship.

don't fall off!

I found some clever little spring clips in the garden shop which I have used to fix my new lights to the kitchen cupboards, so the doors will open and close without any problems.

As low, mood lights go, they work just nicely =]

Rain through the open window makes my plants happy.

A bee visits some common ragwort.

This plant is potentially lethal to horse and cattle but is the natural feeding plant for the cinnabar moth, whose numbers are down considerably in the last few years. This particular plant was also full of bees doing their pollination job. Humans should not touch this plant either as it can cause rashes and other irritations.

As I stood next to it in the sunshine, there was the most amazing smell of honey coming from it.
