The Jim Jim Falls is a plunge waterfall on the Jim Jim Creek that descends over the Arnhem Land escarpment within the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory of Australia. The Jim Jim Falls area is registered on the Australian National Heritage List (Wikipedia). The falls drop is 200 metres and the image was captured from a light plane from an altitude of around 750metres. It was very bumpy! (Best seen in full screen)

Sand dunes with scattered scrub covering them near Uluru (Ayres Rock) in Central Australia. The redness is due to iron oxide in the sand, which is a feature of the "Red Centre" and indeed most of inland Australia. This scene was my first view of the "Red Centre" .

✍️The BUTTERI, the shepherds on horseback, the herdsmen, are the symbol and soul of an ancient land: the Tuscan and Lazio Maremma, a land where the sky belongs to the sea and the sea to the Mediterranean scrub.
The buttero is a name that derives from the Latin “boum-ductor”: driver of oxen.
Their origins date back to the time of the Etruscans.
They are epic figures who keep the ancient equestrian traditions of working riding alive.
They communicate with the herd with whistles, calls and shouts: secrets of a trade, the result of a long oral learning made up of age-old knowledge, handed down from father to son.
The BUTTERI ( cowboys) are still today considered the best tamers of Italian wild horses.
Their reputation as excellent and reckless knights, their silent, hard, solitary life, their presence for centuries in a still wild land, make the figure of the Buttero the most authentic symbol of the Maremma.🐎🐂🐂🐂🐎
Sawley Abbey
Sawley Abbey was an abbey of Cistercian monks in the village of Sawley, Lancashire, in England (and historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire). Created as a daughter-house of Newminster Abbey, it existed from 1149 until its dissolution in 1536, during the reign of King Henry VIII.
Mungo National Park is located in Outback NSW. It has been inhabited for the last 40,000+ years and has seen many changes, from rich river lands, lush with forests to the now semi arid landscape. Time has sculptured amazing scenery which at sunrise and sunset change color by the minute. One feature of the area is the 'Wall of China' filled with lunettes. This is but one of the many.
This is sacred land.
This land is spiritual.
We have just returned from a dream holiday in South Australia and I thought I’d kick this new series off with some highlights of the Flinders Ranges. This photo is of a pioneer cottage located in Arkaroola, approximately 700 kilometers north of Adelaide city centre in the northern Flinders Ranges.
In 2011, the South Australian premier Mike Rann announced a ban on mining and secured its nomination for World Heritage listing.

We’re on our way to Udabno, tucked between colorful hills and bathed in the warm light of the setting sun. Down in the valley, countless cows graze peacefully in the evening stillness. b>Udabno lies in eastern Georgia — a land of vast emptiness and rolling hills, near the border with Azerbaijan. It offers a striking contrast to the lush, mountainous regions found elsewhere in the country. Here, an expansive semi-desert landscape unfolds, with soft, undulating hills, dusty paths, and endless horizons. The earth glows in shades of yellow, red, and brown, especially when the sun hangs low in the sky, and the silence feels almost tangible. You’ll often have the entire landscape to yourself. The surroundings are perfect for quiet walks, picnics, or simply soaking in the silence. From time to time, shepherds pass by with their flocks, adding to the timeless, almost dreamlike atmosphere. Especially in the early morning or at sunset, when the light turns golden and the hills glow in warm tones, the area feels truly magical.

Kakheti is a region in southeastern Georgia, bordering Armenia and Azerbaijan. Coming from the Adnyamathanha word ‘patatjildna’, meaning peppermint gums, Parachilna township was originally surveyed in February 1863, around 10km from its current position.
When the Great Northern Railway was built in 1881, Parachilna was moved to its current location, becoming a maintenance station for the railway and an important siding supplying Blinman and surround areas. It’s also on a railway line that used to connect with the old Ghan line that crosses Australia from Darwin (north) to Adelaide (south).
After enjoying a beer at the nearby Prairie Hotel, I came across this sculpture located on the platform of the old railway station. To my surprise a helicopter musterer flew into the scene and I managed to capture this silhouette of it.

The rugged beauty of the Flinders Ranges unfolds against a backdrop of an endless blue sky and the rich, terracotta hues of the earth. At its centre stands a lifeless native pine, a stark testament to the resilience and fragility of nature in this ancient landscape.

Grass trees epitomize the Australian bush. They are beautiful, ancient, hardy, thrive in nutrient-poor soils and respond to wildfire by flowering profusely. Most species are extremely slow growing and are often very long lived with some estimated to be 350 - 450 years old.
I photographed this particular beauty at Sillers Lookout Arkaroola in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia.

Cradled by ancient mountain ranges on the edge of the desert, Wilpena Pound is the crowning jewel of the Flinders Ranges. Early amateur theories mistakenly suggested the Wilpena Pound was an ancient volcano and I could certainly see why this was the prevailing thought.
The Pound is popular for bushwalking and of all the places in the Flinders Ranges, this place was perhaps a highlight for me.
I took many photos and I could see why artists are drawn to it. I liked the lighting here and it reminded me of some of the early Australian impressionist paintings.

This remarkable sandstone promontory lay beneath the sea during the Oligocene geological period (about 38 million years ago) and contains millions of fossils. One of Australia's oldest fossil marsupials (the possum-like Wynyardia bassiana) was discovered here in the mid 19th Century and is estimated to be approximately 25 million years old.

A distinctive geological feature just outside the Flinders Ranges National Park is a rocky ridge line known as the Great wall of China due to its resemblance to the original. Scientists believe the wall was formed when the rock surrounding the much harder and resistant quartz was weathered and eroded away.
As you get closer to the ridge line, you can really see the resemblance. However, I was fascinated to see this sign in the middle of the South Australian outback and wanted that to feature into my composition.

Ochre has ongoing importance to many Aboriginal people. It has spiritual significance and is used in ceremonies, rock paintings and to decorate weapons and sacred objects. Ochre was traded throughout the ranges and further afield, to the south-east and to Queensland, with red ochre being especially prized.
The artists made red, purple and yellow pigments from ochre clays such as those depicted here, grinding it up (usually with a stone on a grindstone slab) and by adding water.

striking volcanic rock formation in the Teide area on Tenerife set against a deep blue sky, sculpted by time and the forces of nature. The rugged textures and dramatic lighting highlight the raw beauty of the landscape, evoking the untamed spirit of Earth's geological wonders.
Nilgiri is visible almost continually along the Jomsom Road, which comprises about 1/3 of the Annapurna Circuit. There are Roadheads at Beni and Nayapul, both accessible by taxi or bus from Pokhara. From Beni you can walk, bus or jeep it all the way to Muktinath. There are also daily flights from Pokhara to Jomsom. If you are heading north, Nilgiri is that big mountain on your right. There are many fine Teahouses along the Kali Gandaki.

My husband and I took a drive through Monument Valley a couple of years ago, which is absolutely glorious! We stopped to admire this view, when I noticed these horse riders cutting across the sand. I don't usually photograph landscapes (you might want to check out my husband's landscapes - Bill Alley), but this kept to my interest by including living beings in the scene!
Grand Canyon, 2014.
A team of explorers traveling down the Grand Canyon on the back of mules. The hike starting at the South Rim all the way down to the Colorado river is long and exhausting on a winding road that runs along the edge of the cliffs. A lot of people prefer riding the mules for this reason which are specially trained for this terrain.
Sadly, it's hard to appreciate the vastness of this landscape from this image - it must be viewed in full size.
