Historic horse skull and bones on display in the Osaka Museum of History. The exhibits bear the caption: 'Horse skull, 7th century, Morinomiya site'. The site has a history of several hundred years. It was built in the Tokugawa shogun era. This is the site of the Palace of Mori, which is well preserved. Some unearthed cultural relics are still said to be of ornamental value. The Morinomiya ruins are located nearby but were not included in my off line guide so I did not visit.. (Osaka, Japan, Apr/ May 2019) (Osaka, Japan, Apr/ May 2019)

Silver pendant of winged Cupid, a loop on the top for stringing. 200 AD (1")

The last time I visited this popular attraction was on a rainy day in April 2006.

This time the weather was beautiful and I actually used the audio commentary and found it very informative.

An ancient horse gear excavated near the site of the Naniwa Palace ruins and displayed now at the Osaka Museum of History. This is probably part of the stirrup or saddle. The caption next to the exhibit reads 'Iron Horse Gear', 'Late Kofun period, 6th century. The Kofun period refers to a historical era of Japan dated from around 250 to 538 AD following the Yayoi period. The period is characterized by the construction of large burial or tomb mounds. The Kofun era is usually divided into two phases which are the early 4th century and the late 5th and 6th centuries. More fascinating artifacts excavated from the site of the Newman Wine Vaults- dating back to the 1800s, this counter top case shows fragments of port bottles from that era. At the top is the base of a bottle, in the bottom is the neck of another. At the centre is a complete bottle, painfully pieced together from fragments found at the site- almost complete save for a hole at the side. Wow, this is history for you, a bottle of port dating back to the 1800s! Notes about the Newman Wine Vaults appear in previous and subsequent captions in this album. Funerary bust of a man, Limestone, Roman, Beth-Shean / Sebaste, 3rd Century A.D, 325 mm x 280 mm x 153 mm

Stone funerary busts (protomae) of men and women of various ages appeared in Eretz-Israel during the Late Roman era (2nd-3rd centuries CE). In most cases the depiction is schematic, although in some there has been an attempt to create a likeness. Some of these works also carry names, of Greek, Latin, or Semitic origin, and even the age of the deceased. However, this does not reveal the ethnic identity of the dead because, at that time, it was the general custom to give Greek or Latin names.

These carved likenesses of the dead, including their clothing and hairstyles, display the styles that prevailed mainly in the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire. After the conquest of Eretz-Israel by Alexander of Macedon in 332 BCE, Graeco-oriental (Hellenistic) styles became customary among the population, particularly in the Hellenistic cities. Men and women alike are usually depicted wearing tunics, often with a covering garment. The women's hair is dressed in a variety of styles, sometimes embellished with jewellery. The men's hair is simpler, short or full, sometimes with a beard and/or a moustache.

The portrait bust is made of Thasian marble. The youth Antinoos of Bithynia in Asia Minor was the favorite of the emperor Hadrian. After he drowned in the river Nile, Hadrian had him deified and erected numerous statues, busts and portraits of him in various cities and sanctuaries throughout the Roman empire.

Herm of youthful Bacchus / Dionysos, Marble, Roman, 2nd Century A.D, 185 mm x 115 mm x 65 mm

A carved marble herm depicting the Olympian god Bacchus (Greek Dionysos or Dionysus). God of wine, pleasure, ritual madness, ecstasy, and theatre.

In the 2nd century A.D, Roman artists started depicting him as a youth, with a smooth face. The cult of Bacchus was hugely popular, signifying the freedomcreated by wine, music, and ecstatic dance.

Herm or herma are sculptures with a head, sometimes a torso, and male genitals carved at the appropriate height. They are thought to derive from theancient Greek practice of worshipping divinities that were in the form of cairns or columns of stone or wood. These later evolved into adding a head andphallus to the column. Many herma are of Hermes himself, but others - both gods and real figures like Socrates and Plato - are known. Statues like thisone were apotropaic and kept in many places - at crossroads, in temples, in public places, and in homes.

We didn't realize this part closed early in the day and thought we'd come back to it. Too late. It was the my main interest. Oh, well. The Jerusalem model and half-hour talk was just as interesting.
