In the burial practices of ancient Rome and Roman funerary art, marble and limestone sarcophagi elaborately carved in relief were characteristic of elite inhumation burials from the 2nd to the 4th centuries AD. At least 10,000 Roman sarcophagi have survived, with fragments possibly representing as many as 20,000. Although mythological scenes have been quite widely studied, sarcophagus relief has been called the "richest single source of Roman iconography," and may also depict the deceased's occupation or life course, military scenes, and other subject matter. The same workshops produced sarcophagi with Jewish or Christian imagery. Early Christian sarcophagi produced from the late 3rd century onwards, represent the earliest form of large Christian sculpture, and are important for the study of Early Christian art.

They were mostly made in a few major cities, including Rome and Athens, which exported them to other cities. Elsewhere the stela gravestone remained more common.

This dart point is about 2 3/4 inches in length (70 mm), has a rounded base, and is made of well weathered chert.

The style and weathering indicate that this artifact is probably many thousands of years old. The base looks re-worked and less weathered, so the original may have been a different style base.

It was found near El Sauz in South Texas in the mid 1960's.

This is the finely detailed top half of what may have been a large knife or possibly a dart point.

This half is about 2 inches in length (50 mm), so the original artifact was probably at least 3 inches or more in length (75 mm or more).

The point is still needle sharp and the sides have very fine serrations for cutting.

The Indus Valley Civilisation was an important Bronze Age culture which arose in c. 3300 BC and lasted until c. 1300, though its heyday, to which this ceramic vessel belongs, was in the 3rd millennium BC. The bull, with its hump and powerful horns, is a recurring motif in the Indus Valley, appearing on painted pottery like this example but also on figurines and stamps. The animal may represent the leader of a herd, who is able to protect his followers, or it could be a reflection of the bull’s importance in religious sacrifice.
