Henri Matisse was a member of the Fauvist Movement. The 'Wild Ones' used unrestrained colours rejecting the 'palette' of their forerunners - The Impressionists. In Madame Matisse, subtitled 'The Green Line', the colours are turbulent. The front facing position lends the portrait the charisma of what it was later to become - an icon. Looking around, Stacey's face suited the subject, sometimes intense or dreamy, sometimes wilful and obstinate. Matisse' painterly analytical separation into small planes suits a style made up of stamps in a mosaic graphic image. He said ..."Breaking up colour leads to the breaking up of form and outline. What you are left with is a tease of the retina that destroys repose". In this picture Pete experimentally breaks up the stamp shape, cutting various size triangles suggesting pattern and light values.
