Every move matters, every choice has a consequence and most of all, you pray that your enemy doesn’t see your plan. Chess has personality. This is what I like about this game. You have all these different types of pieces, all so different but yet they work together so magically.

There’s nothing luxurious about where this game is being played. The stretch of the street is dominated by street food and chess players. Basically, people of all kinds come to play chess here. Thought of having a go but I was getting late to go back home. There’s always next time they say.

After Apollo 11 returned from the Moon, samples of lunar soil were analysed by NASA and found that the necessary ingredients to support plant life were abundant. Lacking oxygen though, and subject to the incredible swings in temperature the Moon sees, the finding was little more than a footnote of interest to a few scientists. Nobody gave thought to actually growing things on the Moon; that would be left to colonists a century later to worry about, or so it was assumed. After all, the main achievement of Apollo 11 and subsequent missions was political — The USA had beaten the Soviet Union.

One idea, promulgated by two plant specialists at Purdue University, was that a subsequent mission might carry a representative collection of Earth’s seeds, to be stored on the Moon, protected from Earth’s unpredictable weather and possible nuclear wars. (The Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway, designed to accomplish the same task on a much larger scale, didn’t open until 2006.)

So, in 1971, when Apollo 14, piloted by Allan Shepard and Ed Michell touched down in the Fra Mauro formation, a small container of seeds was along for the ride. Apollo 14 is best remembered as the flight Allan Shepard hit a couple of golf balls “miles and miles”. Not a single report in the media carried a story saying that if doomsday came to Earth, the potential to restore nature lay in an aluminium box, one the size a person might use on a plane as carry-on luggage.

Shepard buried the box about a 50 metres from the lunar module. The next day, February 6, 1971, Shepard and Mitchell ignited the hypergolic engine of Anteres, their lunar module, and were soon on their way back to Earth, where interest in lunar exploration was already fading.

Unfortunately, the blast from the departing LEM unearthed the seed bank from it’s shallow grave, and tossed it close to a kilometre in the airless sky and minimal gravity of the Moon. On landing the box deformed, broke open, and the seeds were tossed into the lunar soil.

This later fact was discovered in 2042, when Chinese astronauts came to Fra Mauro for a photo opportunity; their government still trumpeting their space achievements after having beaten the US back to the moon in 2033. What they hadn’t planned on was discovering four Irish Black Hawthorns on a ridge overlooking the landing site.

It seemed that the incredibly tough trees, accustomed to the hard Irish winters, poor soil, and lack of sunshine had somehow adapted. Scientists suggested that solar radiation altered the seeds as they lay in the soil, allowing them to extract oxygen and water from the lunar earth. No other plants from the Apollo 14 mission were found by the Chinese.

One of the four trees was immediately cut down, tied to their lunar rover, and dragged off for later analysis.

Earth’s 2016 surface temperatures were the warmest since modern recordkeeping began in 1880, according to independent analyses by NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Globally-averaged temperatures in 2016 were 1.78 degrees Fahrenheit (0.99 degrees Celsius) warmer than the mid-20th century mean. This makes 2016 the third year in a row to set a new record for global average surface temperatures.

The planet’s long-term warming trend is seen in this chart of every year’s annual temperature cycle from 1880 to the present

The planet’s long-term warming trend is seen in this chart of every year’s annual temperature cycle from 1880 to the present, compared to the average temperature from 1880 to 2015. Record warm years are listed in the column on the right.

The 2016 temperatures continue a long-term warming trend, according to analyses by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York. NOAA scientists concur with the finding that 2016 was the warmest year on record based on separate, independent analyses of the data.

Because weather station locations and measurement practices change over time, there are uncertainties in the interpretation of specific year-to-year global mean temperature differences. However, even taking this into account, NASA estimates 2016 was the warmest year with greater than 95 percent certainty.

Ángel Ganivet García (Granada, 13 December 1865-Riga, 29 November 1898) was a Spanish writer and diplomat. He is considered by some authors to be a precursor of the Generation of '98 and by others a full member of it.

He was born in Granada on 13 December 1865,1 into a middle-class family. His father died when he was nine years old. At the age of ten, a fracture nearly caused him to lose a leg; risking his life, he refused amputation and, after years of rehabilitation, managed to avoid becoming lame. Delayed by his convalescence, he began his studies between 1880 and 1890, studying for his baccalaureate and degrees in Law and Philosophy and Letters, always achieving outstanding grades.

He owes his fame above all to his Idearium español, a book which, despite its small length, occupies a prominent place in modern Spanish thought. A controversial work, on the one hand, the Larousse Encyclopaedia describes it as "a capital work of great philosophical depth" and, on the other, Manuel Azaña analyses and criticises it objectively in his work Comuneros contra el Rey (Communards against the King).

He rejects the Platonic stoicism of the Spanish tradition, which has caused Spain's great essential defect, abulia, and proposes an axiological change based on will, ideas and action.

Jan Theuninck

Rimbaud is still relevant now that we are living a season in hell in a civilization that is moving towards a new world order: this communitarianism is already the basis of hundreds of new global rules and regulations that eliminate individual rights because this policy considers that individual rights and freedoms constitute a real threat to the security of the community; the messianic propaganda used reminds us of the dark days of Nazism or Communism. History has taught us nothing: we can see the commemorations of the Holocaust almost daily while today there is a proliferation of chemical (gas chamber technology) and energy weapons on an individual scale. : it is contemporary torture for those who are suspected of not thinking correctly. “Safe City” technology monitors everyone from the moment they leave their door until the moment they return, and they enter your home to place microphones and micro cameras there under the pretext that you are in contact with a person. “suspect” of terrorism. According to Hannah Arendt, preparation for totalitarianism has been successful when people have lost touch with their fellow human beings as well as the reality around them: think about it!
