Took this at my ol' apartment building, when I was living in Pittsburgh.
Spotted in a Worcestershire lane.

I've never been much interested in the art of the studio portrait. It must have been early influences - great photographers whose work I studied when I was a kid. I loved the style of W. Eugene Smith, the way he captured slices of real life, more than, say, Philippe Halsman, although the latter's brilliant, contrived studio setups were both amazing and amusing. (If you don't know the work of these 20th Century masters, they are both worth googling...)
Anyway, for multiple reasons both known and unknown to me, I always gravitated toward the "slice o' life" portrait, almost never asking a subject to pose, just looking for the "decisive moment" a la Henri Cartier-Bresson (yet another masterful, pioneering photographer whose work is extraordinary). So... winding the clock back 44 years... this is my friend Pam, whom I photographed a lot during my Vancouver days in the 1970s and '80s, for obvious reasons. Beyond the obvious, she always has encouraged my work - still does, in fact - and she also liked to be photographed. And I did pose her occasionally, but usually I just tried to be around her with my camera to try to capture her beauty and grace in moments that were "real", not staged.
This may look like a studio shot, but it was just a candid snap in the right light, and she gave me a direct look that I loved. Thanks to the polar vortex, I've spent the past ten days indoors and have rummaged through countless old negatives; finding and scanning this one made me really happy because I'd lost it and forgotten it. Natural window light. A couple of small, distracting details removed from the background in processing.

A baby baboon (Papio anubis) amuses itself playing with a stick in the fresh growth of the rainy season in Ngorongoro Caldera, Tananzai, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its mother was foraging nearby so the baby felt safe enough to play on its own. Loved the foot in the air as it tried to 'climb' the stick.

Wake up, Maggie I think I got something to say to you
It's late September and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused, but I feel I'm being used
Oh, Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone
You stole my heart, and that's what really hurts - Rod Stewart
Magpies have always given me problems. If the light wasn't perfect I could count on getting no details from this bird. Today was overcast and gray but when this bird just landed on this mullein a stone's throw away I knew I had a golden opportunity. I had time for a short burst and not even a chance to zoom out before the bird was gone. It was like Maggie was having some compassion late this September before leaving.
Bailey doesn't know what birds are. Born and raised indoors, they are a source of entertainment in the mornings. She is never excited, just enjoys watching them.

Just a fun shot of a hoverfly in flight taken a few weeks ago in the back garden. The 'sun' in the background was a large dandelion flower and I thought it might make an amusing shot.

Getting wet for the rocks is like putting lipstick on. Body gets a lift and the soul a mirror to look at itself. But you can’t see that virtual smile, the hidden amused expression quietly lurking within its mass … however hard you look … for that you have to split the rock in half.
We were thoroughly entertained by a work train cresting the Summit of the Alleghenies. And they were thoroughly amused by us.
