A crossroad with a little temple inside Amritsar, in Punjab, North of India, offers a little peek on the normal life of the city, but to me, recalls one of those places I've seen in adventure movies like Indiana Jones.

One from the archives.Taken just before sunrise on a visit to Amritsar in March 2016.I still cannot forget the peace and tranquility that enveloped me as I sat beside the holy sarovar (pool) all by myself listening to the melodious notes of the early morning kirtan.

Sanjay's sister and her family are coming for a longish visit and I will be a little busy for the next couple of weeks.I will try and peep in as often as I can but I will probably not be very prompt with my commenting.Take care all of you, stay safe.

Taken without a stand just after sunset.

The Golden Temple also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib is the holiest Gurdwara of the Sikhs. In 1578 ,the fourth Sikh Guru,Guru Ram Das built a tank - Amritsar which literally means the Tank of Nectar and the city of Amritsar grew up around it.In 1588 ,the fifth Guru,Guru Arjan initiated the construction of a Gurdwara in the centre of this holy tank. The foundation of the Gurdwara was laid by Hazrat Mian Mir on 28th December 1588.The construction was completed in 1604.Guru Arjan installed the Guru Granth Sahib in it.In the early 19th century Maharaja Ranjit Singh secured the Punjab from external attacks and had the upper portion of this beautiful Gurdwara covered with gold.Hence the name Golden Temple.

The Golden Temple is open to people of all faiths and is visited by thousands of people from India and abroad everyday.

This was my first visit to the Golden Temple and I was simply mesmerized by it.In the three days that I spent in Amritsar I visited it 3 times and captured it in different moods.I also spent quite some time just sitting by myself beside the holy tank listening to the readings from the Guru Granth Sahib or to the holy kirtans and I was filled with sublime peace.

The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, meaning "abode of God" or Darbār Sahib, meaning "exalted court" , is a Gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India.[It is the holiest Gurdwara and the most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism.

The temple is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) that was completed by Guru Ram Das in 1577. Guru Arjan – the fifth Guru of Sikhism, requested Sai Mir Mian Mohammed – a Muslim Pir of Lahore to lay its foundation stone in 1589. In 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib, calling the site Ath Sath Tirath (lit. "shrine of 68 pilgrimages"). The temple was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it became a target of persecution and was destroyed several times by the Muslim armies from Afghanistan and the Mughal Empire. Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809, overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. This has led to the name the Golden Temple.

This photo was taken during late evening, and has two friends engaged on cellphone , even when they are in one of the holiest shrine of humanity. A couple is just gazing at the temple, a lady is standing perhaps to take a cellphone photo and one gent is just sitting idly. Both mundane and religion go together. One can also see on the left the long queue of pilgrims waiting patiently for their opportunity to go inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Everyone inside this temple complex has to be bare footed and has to compulsorily cover one's head.
