An Ampelmann system is an offshore personnel transfer system developed from a design dreamed up by young engineers of the Delft University of Technology (the ‘TU – Delft’). Its ramps are telescoping and motion compensated, allowing easy and safe crew access from moving vessels to offshore structures, even in stormy conditions.
The Ampelmann factory can be found at the RDM (Rotterdam) - a former and redeveloped shipyard. You might have guessed that the name is based on the iconic Berlin Ampelmännchen traffic light for pedestrians.
The Amplemann (S type) shown here is mounted on the Aqua Helix, a high-speed crew ship (capacity: 122 passengers), built by Damen Shipyards (check out the previous post).

East German Ampelmännchen
Ampelmännchen (German: [ˈampl̩ˌmɛnçən] ⓘ; literally little traffic light man, diminutive of Ampelmann [ampl̩ˈman] ⓘ) is the symbol shown on pedestrian signals in Germany. Prior to German reunification in 1990, the two Germanies had different forms for the Ampelmännchen, with a generic human figure in West Germany, and a generally "male" figure wearing a hat in the East.
The Ampelmännchen is a beloved symbol in former East Germany,[1] "enjoy[ing] the privileged status of being one of the few features of East Germany to have survived the end of the Iron Curtain with his popularity unscathed."[2] After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Ampelmännchen acquired cult status and became a popular souvenir item in the tourism business.[1]

Zwei Länder, eine Geschichte
Design aus Deutschland erlangte zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts weltweite Bedeutung. Nach 1949 nahm es einen einzigartigen Verlauf: In den zwei Teilen des gespaltenen Landes setzte sich die Entwicklung der Vorkriegszeit unter völlig unterschiedlichen Vorzeichen fort. Gemeinsam mit dem Vitra Design Museum präsentiert das Kunstgewerbemuseum der Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden in einer großen Gesamtschau die deutsche Designgeschichte der Nachkriegszeit. Dabei werden die unterschiedlichen Lebenswelten, aber auch die Parallelen und Querbezüge zwischen Design in Ost und West deutlich.
Prolog
Der außergewöhnliche Fall der doppelten Geschichte zeigt auf, welchen Stellenwert Design unter verschiedenen materiellen und gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen hatte. Im ersten Ausstellungsbereich geht es deshalb um Gestaltung in beiden Staaten als Instrument politischer Propaganda und Werkzeug für die jeweilige Identitätsbildung. Zudem werden Objekte vorgestellt, die eine Verbindung zwischen beiden Staaten aufzeigen. Das Anknüpfen an die Ideen der Moderne oder wirtschaftlicher Transfer waren auf beiden Seiten der Mauer relevant. Die Ausstellung bricht mit der Darstellung bisheriger Retrospektiven und Publikationen zu „deutschem“ Design, die der ostdeutschen Designkultur selten eine eigene Bedeutung zugestanden hat.

Ampelmännchen
1949-60: Wiederaufbau und Neubeginn
Im Jahr 1949 wurden im Abstand von wenigen Monaten die Bundesrepublik Deutschland (BRD) und die Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR) gegründet. Auf beiden Seiten der innerdeutschen Grenze knüpften Designerinnen und Designer an gemeinsame Vorbilder und Gestaltungsideale der Vorkriegszeit an, etwa den 1907 gegründeten Deutschen Werkbund oder an das Bauhaus. Trotz unterschiedlicher wirtschaftlicher Systeme und politischer Ausrichtungen reagierten beide Staaten auf die Bedürfnisse ihrer Bürger ähnlich: mit einem Fokus auf industrielle Fertigung, fortschrittliche Produktkultur und modernem Wohnungsbau.
Auf beiden Seiten wurden Wiedereröffnungen und Neugründungen von Designunstitutionen, Gestaltungshochschulen und Unternehmen vorangetrieben. Einige Firmen hatten sogar Standorte in Ost und West.

Runder Tisch
Im Gesprächsformat „Runder Tisch“ kommen Designer*innen und Designexpert*innen zusammen, um Fragen des deutsch-deutschen Designs und seiner Geschichte zu erörtern. Der Name ist in Anlehnung an die gleichnamigen Gremien von 1989/90 gewählt. Dank ihrer offenen Struktur wurden sie zu Foren, in denen sich Bürger*innen eigenständig organisieren, Probleme offen und sachlich diskutieren und gemeinsam nach Lösungsansätzen suchen konnten und leisteten so einen Beitrag zur gewaltfreien Institutionalisierung der Demokratie. Eigens für die Veranstaltungsreihe haben die Deutschen Werkstätten ein Möbel gefertigt, das sich in der Farbigkeit an den Katalog und thematisch an die Ausstellung anlehnt.

Von dem Tag, als ich die DDR Ampelmännchen sah, mochte ich sie. Nun gibt es in Berlin haufenweise Läden in denen Dinge mit Ampelmännchen drauf verkauft werden.
Es gibt auch ein Ampelmann-Café und ein Ampelmädchen :-)
Gehen, stehen und auch mal sitzen und Kaffee trinken...alles zu seiner Zeit!

From the day when I saw the GDR Ampelmännchen, I liked it. Now there are lots of shops in Berlin where things are sold with Ampelmännchen on it.
There is also a café and an Ampelmann traffic lights girl :-)

The Rotterdam World Port Days - cancelled in 2020 'cause of the Covid pandemic, a crippled edition (partly online) in 2021 (same reason). And now fully back.
Shown here is the Aqua Helix. It is a fast crew supplier (capacity: 122 passengers), built by Damen Shipyards. Prominent features of the ship are its radical wave piercing and stability-enhancing axe-bow and the Ampelmann, motion-compensated telescoping gangway, used to offer offshore workers easy access to oil rigs, wind turbines etc. The Ampelmann will be shown in the next post.
The Aqua Helix is operated by Ocean Express, a joint venture of Damen and Ampelmann. According to a Damen spokesman (who was part of the design team) we met aboard the vessel, it offers a more efficient and more safe offshore crew transport solution than the helicopter. does.

Ich wollte meinen goldigen Beitrag für Flickr Friday fotografieren. Aber irgendwie wollte das mit den Pins nicht klappen.
Beim Einpacken stellte ich fest, dass das Ampelmännchen immer noch in der Tasche ist. Da das Licht auch schon weggepackt war, wurde die Aufnahme mit dem vorhandenen Licht aufgenommen, daher auch der Schatten.

Unter den Linden - Berlin-Mitte
Das Ampelmännchen (het verkeerslichtmannetje) is de Duitse benaming voor het figuurtje op verkeerslichten voor voetgangers, en in het bijzonder voor het ontwerp daarvan in de voormalige DDR. In tegenstelling tot andere landen, waar de verkeerslichtfiguren abstract en zakelijk getekend zijn, is het Oost-Duitse symbool veel speelser. Het is een kort mannetje met een hoed op. Het groene mannetje loopt met een opgeheven arm, het rode steekt zijn armen wijd uit. Na de val van de muur werd besloten dat verkeerstekens eenvormig moesten zijn en dus werden vanaf het midden van de jaren negentig de verkeerslichten omgebouwd naar de Europese standaard. In oktober 1996 richtten enkele ontwerpers een comité op met de naam Rettet die Ampelmännchen (Red de verkeerslichtmannetjes) en werden er veel Ampelmann-producten geproduceerd. De Ampelmännchen werden in zekere zin het symbool voor de manier waarop het Westen in het verenigde Duitsland de westerse cultuur oplegde. De actiegroep had succes: het Oost-Duitse Ampelmännchen mocht blijven en er zijn er weer een groot aantal teruggeplaatst. Sindsdien heeft het Ampelmännchen een cultstatus bereikt en wordt het gezien als een stukje Ostalgie. In januari 2005 is men zelfs begonnen in het westelijk deel van Berlijn Ampelmännchen in de verkeerslichten te plaatsen, omdat deze veel makkelijker te herkennen zijn dan de traditionele mannetjes, maar vooral omdat het door de bevolking gewaardeerd wordt. Het is dus niet meer mogelijk aan de verkeerslichten te zien aan welke kant van de voormalige muur men zich bevindt.
Das Ampelmännchen (the traffic light man) is the German name for the figure on pedestrian traffic lights, and in particular for their design in the former GDR. In contrast to other countries, where the traffic light figures are drawn abstractly and businesslike, the East German symbol is much more playful. It is a short man wearing a hat. The green man walks with one arm raised, the red man extends his arms wide. After the fall of the Wall, it was decided that traffic signs had to be uniform and so from the mid-1990s the traffic lights were converted to the European standard. In October 1996, a group of designers formed a committee called Rettet die Ampelmännchen (Save the Traffic Light Men) and many Ampelmann products were produced. The Ampelmännchen became, in a sense, a symbol for the way in which the West imposed Western culture on the united Germany. The action group was successful: the East German Ampelmännchen were allowed to stay and a large number of them were put back. Since then, the Ampelmännchen have achieved cult status and are seen as a piece of Ostalgie. In January 2005, people even started to place Ampelmännchen in the traffic lights in the western part of Berlin, because they are much easier to recognize than the traditional men, but above all because it is appreciated by the population. It is therefore no longer possible to see from the traffic lights which side of the former wall you are on.

Collision with wind turbine.
At 11.06 hrs. on 10th. April 2018, Vos Stone was operating in the Baltic Sea's Arkona Offshore Wind Farm at transition piece TP AB01, a wind turbine under construction. While a construction team was making the necessary preparations to feed cables at TP AB01 they were called back to the ship due to deteriorating weather conditions. The return of the team to the ship was carried by means of the Ampelmann 'walk2work' (W2W) gangway and was completed a littler later. Just minutes after casting off from the wind turbine, the ships master decided to test an emergency control system, which resulted in the loss of control of the ship.
The wind and waves pushed Vos Stone back against TP AB01. The 1st. Officer regained control of the ship shortly before the collision, but there was no longer sufficient time to prevent it. The turbine sustained minor damage, while three crewmembers onboard the Vos Stone suffered minor injuries as a result of the impact. The damage to the ship was so bad that it needed repairing at a shipyard.

Une des fresques “légendaires” de “East Side Gallery”, long pan survivant du triste Mur de Berlin, sur mille trois cent mètres de long, livré désormais intégralement aux artistes, plus ou moins talentueux, du “street art”
Certaines fresques changent parfois, recouvertes par des plus récentes, mais celle-ci est épargnée et, malgré les dégradations naturelles ou vandalisatrices qui l’ont affecté au cours du temps, le mythique baiser langoureux entre Brejnev et Honegger (le communisme partage tout, même ses bactéries, c’est bien connu !) renaît indéfiniment de ses cendres soviétiques…
Et l’image est devenue une icône berlinoise…
Ce que les Berlinois appellent “Ostalgie” (la nostalgie de l’Est) : La Trabant, le petit bonhomme Ampelmann, et les vieux insignes et images soviétiques d’un autre âge, constellés de drapeaux rouges, de faucilles et de marteaux, d'ouvriers robustes, et de matrones agricoles à la morphologie généreuse…
La propagande mensongère n’avait pas attendu les réseaux sociaux !
Et chez les photographes, n’oublions pas les boîtiers Zenit russes, dont la légendaire robustesse leur permet encore de caler occasionnellement des armoires normandes.

This 3.5m tall Giant Ampelmann statue with the inscription ’25 Jahre Deutsche Einheit’ (25 years of German unity) is now visible on the grounds of the Hessische Landesvertretung in Berlin from In den Ministergärten or Ebertstraße.

Ampelmännchen Signals, also known as Ampelmann or ampel men, are East German pedestrian traffic light symbols that were introduced in Berlin on October 13th 1961. In response to the growing threat of road traffic accidents, a traffic psychologist named Karl Peglau developed the first pedestrian signals for use in the GDR capital. The vehicle traffic light, which had directed traffic alone up to that point, was joined by the pedestrian traffic light with Amplemann.

Les boutiques Ampelmann Shop sont dédiées aux produits dérivés du fameux Ampelmann, le feu de circulation pour piétons distinctif de Berlin-Est, devenu source de polémique lors de la réunification et un des symboles du phénomène de l'Ostalgie (die Ostalgie en allemand tiré des mots Ost (Est) et Nostalgie) désignant les regrets de certains Est-Berlinois sur des éléments perdus de la vie de tous les jours dans l'ancienne République démocratique allemande (RDA).
Berlin est la capitale et la plus grande ville d'Allemagne et la ville la plus peuplée de l'Union européenne. Située dans le Nord-Est du pays, c'est également l'un des seize Länder de la République fédérale.
Fondée au 13e siècle, Berlin a été successivement capitale de l'électorat du Brandebourg (1247-1701), du royaume de Prusse (1701-1871), de l'Empire allemand (1871-1918), de la république de Weimar (1919-1933) et du Troisième Reich (1933-1945). Après 1945 et jusqu'à la chute du mur de Berlin en 1989, la ville est partagée en quatre secteurs d'occupation. Pendant la guerre froide, le secteur soviétique de la ville, nommé Berlin-Est, est devenu la capitale de la République démocratique allemande, alors que Berlin-Ouest était politiquement rattachée à la République fédérale d'Allemagne, devenant ainsi un bastion avancé du « Monde libre » à l'intérieur du Bloc communiste.
Après la chute du mur, Berlin redevint, en 1990, la capitale de l'Allemagne alors réunifiée, et les principales institutions fédérales y emménagèrent en 1999.
