Seems like stepping back in time!

I cropped this because I took it from the van while we were quite a distance away. Also there was a big ugly electrical wire running along the road and it looped down into the picture.

This lovely farm scene is down township road 370, which branches off Ohio route 557 between near the village of Charm. I took this photo on October 10, 2013 during a little drive in the country while visiting the area. Notice the little Amish school, Steam Valley Parochial School, in the foreground.

Perth East (Perth County), Northwest of Kitchener, Ontario, has one one of the largest Amish communities in Canada. This community operates its own Amish school system and to raise operating funds, they hold an annual, one-day auction sale, a huge auction sale. This year, the auction was held on a farm about 2 km Northwest of the village of Milverton, Ontario A substantial portion of a 100 acre farm is used to first lay out the items for sale, erect massive tents for food preparation, sale and consumption, cooling areas, and then carry out the auction process. By 'items' I mean everything from plants to quilts, antiques, farm equipment, horses, carriages, furniture, small animals (rabbits, chickens, ducks, turkeys, etc.), hardware, etc. At any given time there are up to nine auctions going on, each dedicated to a specific class of offering. Thousands of people attend, both from the Amish community, local farmers, the simply curious and me. Here two Amish ladies stand beside a small shed of indeterminate function (a possible outhouse?) seemingly discussing whether or not to bid. - JW

Taken using a hand-held Nikon D7100 fitted with a Nikkor 18-105mm VR lense set to 48mm, ISO100, Aperture priority mode, f/8.0, 1/125 sec. PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: resize to 9000x6000, use camera WB (camera was on Auto WB) but slightly warm it up, slightly reduce exposure, slightly increase contrast, slightly increase black level, slightly increase vibrance (with skin tone protection set to 'on'), apply noise reduction, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: there were two issues I wanted to deal with: distracting detail on left (which could be cropped off) and the man in the upper left who's shirt and general colour was distracting so I decided to desaturate him. Slightly modify the tone curve by pulling down the bottom 20% of the curve and darken only the darker areas, slightly boost overall contrast, duplicate the image to a layer below the colour layer and convert that new layer to B&W by using the B&W film simulation tool with the Ilford Delta 100 model, use a soft-edged eraser tool to remove the man from the upper right corner revealing the B&W version from the layer below, create new working layer from visible result, crop off the left side to get rid of distracting details, sharpen, save, scale image to 4000 vertical (by approx 5000 horizontal) – my preferred size fro prepping an image to be posted on-line, add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, scale to 1800 wide for posting.

As we wandered around the 20th Annual Amish School Auction (a fund-raiser for Amish schools in the Perth East area, North-West of Kitchener, Ontario) just Northwest of village of Milverton, Ontario on the weekend, we were looking over the row of buggies for sale when we came across this young lady going for a 'test ride' in her buggy of choice. This buggy is fairly typical of the several main types used in the region by Amish and other Anabaptist groups. The sheer scale of the auction was impressive, with nine auctioneers in operation simultaneously as they sold off the various groups of auction offerings including not just buggies but horses and other smaller livestock, furniture, antiques, quilts, plants, hardware. The crowds came out despite the mud following the preceding night's rainfall. Lots of fun. - JW

PP in free Open Source RAWTherapee from Nikon RAW/NEF source file: resize to 9000x6000, use camera WB but slightly warm it (camera was on auto WB for original capture), enable shadows and highlights and recover highlights and shadows (both small amounts), slightly increase contrast, slightly increase black level, slightly increase vibrance (with skin tone protection enabled), enable noise reduction, save. PP in free Open Source GIMP: adjust tone curve to set black point and then slightly pull up the middle of the curve to brighten the mid-tones, duplicate the image to a layer below the original layer, in the new layer adjust the tone curve to brighten the face of the little girl and then increase contrast as well as decrease the red channel colour saturation to get a better-looking face tonality, use a large soft-edged eraser tool to remove the face from the top layer to reveal the better face from the layer below, create new working layer from visible result, adjust colour balance to remove a slight green cast (add magenta), slightly increase overall contrast, sharpen, save, scale image to 6000x4000 (my preferred size for prepping an image for posting), add fine black and white frame, add bar and text on left, scale to 1800 wide for posting.

Additional facts about Amish schools:

Cooperation, not competition is the main spirit of plain schools

The school years usually starts around September 1 and ends May 1. There is school on Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. so they are done quicker to help on the farm.

The school day usually runs from 9 AM to 3 PM

Students are called scholars

Scholars and the teacher either walk or take a horse & buggy to school

Scholars begin school at age 6 and attend through the 8th grade at around age 14

All scholars bring their own lunch

Grades 1 through 8 are in the same room

Scholars usually do not receive homework because of the chores they have to do at home

Older scholars help younger scholars learn

Basic subjects are stressed: reading, writing, spelling, english, arithmetric - the old fashion method. Other subjects taught are geography, history, penmanship, health, german writing/reading, and singing.

Each school has between 25 to 35 scholars

Scholars and the teacher keep the school clean

Amish men take care of the heavy upkeep of the school

Amish schools accept no local or government funds to support their schools even though the Amish pay the same taxes as the English. The community supports the school

Teachers are usually unmarried and only a couple years older than her/his 8th grade pupils. They usually have no education beyond the 8th grade

Teachers salary varies but is usually around $25 a day

Parents visit the school unannounced

The Amish all male school board meets once a month and has 3 to 5 members

Drinking water is hand pumped

Lanterns provide light except for the Old Order Mennonites which use electricity

Outhouses serve as toilets

Supplies, such as blackboards, needed for the school are purchased from schools that are being torn down

Religion is not taught in the school but a Christian example is expected

In 1972 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Amish right to religious liberty in the school

The price of a one room school in the late 1980's was approximately $18,000 plus lots of donated labor. The price covered building, outhouses, shelves, and blackboards. Usual size is 34' x 30' or a total of 1,000 sq. feet. Land is usually donated by an Amish owner.

In 1989 in Lancaster County, there were 4,650 scholars in 156 schools. 103 of those schools were Old Order Amish. 53 schools were Old Order Mennonite.

Late 1980's costs in Lancaster County of Amish versus public schools. Annual per pupil cost of instruction: Amish $200 Public $3,445

Amish Country / Lancaster County, Pennsylvania / Amish Farm and House / Tourist Property / School House Interior

Amish children get out of school by the end of April. This is an end of school picnic with teachers and students playing a game of baseball. As much as they love the game the Amish do not go to major league ballgames.

These buggies are all lined up at an Amish school. The children go to school until they are about 16-years old. The children were in the school house (far left) while the horses stayed warm in the barn behind the buggies. I had to be quick to take the picture while no one was around. The Amish do not like to be photographed ~ they think the process will steal their soul...

An Amish school house built in 1977. In our times that would be old and they would want to put millions into a new school
