Macro Mondays 'zed' theme.

Amethyst quartz necklace and earrings.

The image measures 1.5" in width

My second choice for today's MM 'zed' theme. This piece of amethyst was sent to me by a kind Flickr friend, Cindy, all the way from Thunder Bay in Canada, where her family has a mine. It took more than eight weeks to arrive and we both thought it had gone astray, thank goodness it hadn't.

Peace and Love in the corner...must be that time of the season...

I have no conscience, frost is my soul,

I will not leave you, until your body is cold.

I reflect like a mirror but don’t believe what you see,

The reflection looking back.. some say that it's me.

This 12-foot-tall amethyst geode is one of the largest in the world. The geode, which weighs more than 9,000 pounds was recently collected in the Bolsa Mine in Uruguay. On temporary display in the Grand Gallery, it will eventually be the centerpiece in the new Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals, which are expected to open in 2019 as part of the Museum’s 150th anniversary celebration.

Approximately 135 million years ago, red-hot molten magma poured out of vents in the ground, forming lake-like sheets. As one of these sheets cooled quickly, giant gas bubbles formed within the magma and were frozen into the rock as it solidified. This geode formed from one of those giant bubbles, called amygdules. As the hardened magma cooled, water slowly seeped into the cavity, carrying dissolved chemical components that crystallized as chalcedony and then quartz crystals on the cavity wall. Over millions of years, the quartz turned purple, becoming amethyst. The crystals built up over time, growing toward the center to create a geode.

Pure quartz crystals are colourless but amethyst gets its colour from the iron impurities and gamma ray radiation (from nuclear decay in the surrounding rocks ) knocking an electron from an iron lattice site and depositing it in an interstitial state. The resulting +4 ionised iron absorbs certain wavelengths of light, 357 and 545 nanometers; basically absorbing green so magenta is left, causing the amethyst colour. Now isn't that exciting! Most amethyst sold in shops etc. comes from the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, other Brazilian locations and Uruguay, where it occurs in pockets (geodes) within lava flows.

Amethyst quartz; a common sight in mineral shops and usually overpriced, this one came from a junk shop and cost me just £15. Admittedly, the purple could be stronger and the crystals at the edge are a bit hazy looking but it is a good sized chunk, and I have others (pictures pending). These belong on the ledge by the shower...I moved them to clean...but I always have to play with my camera a bit while doing chores!
