Happy National Voter Registration Day!
Please exercise your right to vote this year, and take somebody with you. Voting is a privilege of citizenship that many "American-Americans" did not have...in the not to distant past.
The only way that your one vote doesn't count, is when it's not used!

The Anne Marie transport passengers between the mainland and Sapelo Island. Sapelo Island, a barrier island, had a population of about 70 persons- most who are African Americans descended from enslaved workers. Some families can trace their lineage over nine generations. Because there are few employment opportunities and no schools on the island, workers and students use the ferry to reach jobs and schools on the mainland. Most of the land area on Sapelo Island is designated a the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Is the caption complimentary or derogatory? Did the author see "black" as a handicap that Haben Girma had overcome like her blindness and deafness? Perhaps I'm just being hypersensitive with all this racial tension these days...but I've seen melanin-challenged folks that are darker than both of them. Are their races faded?
😬
Haben's mother is from Africa (Eritrea), but she was born in California...maybe she is truly African-American (if she has dual citizenship). But, Africa is a continent, so that would make her Eritrean-American or an American-Eritrean...How about we just stop at American!
😉
