The orange-winged amazon (Amazona amazonica), also known locally as orange-winged parrot and loro guaro, is a large amazon parrot. It is a resident breeding bird in tropical South America, from Colombia, Trinidad and Tobago south to Peru, Bolivia and central Brazil. Its habitat is forest and semi-open country. Although common, it is persecuted as an agricultural pest and by capture for the pet trade (over 66,000 captured from 1981 to 1985). It is also hunted as a food source. Introduced breeding populations have been reported in Puerto Rico .

Eucharis amazonica is a species of flowering plant in the family Amaryllidaceae, native to Peru. It is cultivated as an ornamental in many countries and naturalized in Venezuela, Mexico, the West Indies, Ascension Island, Sri Lanka, Fiji, the Solomon Islands and the Society Islands. The English name Amazon lily is used for this species, but is also used for the genus Eucharis as a whole (and for other genera).
Victoria Amazonica is a species of flowering plant, the largest of the Nymphaeaceae family of Water Lilies. It is the National Flower of Guyana. They are commonly called Amazon Lily, Royal Water Lily or Amazon Water Platter. I saw this one at the Florida Zoo.

"Victoria amazonica" also called "Victoria regia" is a species of flowering plant, the second largest in the water lily family Nymphaeaceae. Its native region is tropical South America, specifically Guyana and the Amazon Basin.
The first published description of the genus was by John Lindley in October 1837, based on specimens of this plant returned from British Guiana by Robert Schomburgk. Lindley named the genus after the newly ascended Queen Victoria, and the species "Victoria regia".

The Leiden Observatory was founded in 1633 as an observatory at Leiden University. The Old Observatory of Leiden is the oldest surviving university observatory in the world. This historical monument still plays an educational role for the University and the city of Leiden.
The Old Observatory Leiden is next to the Hortus. At the bottom of the building, a visitor center has been set up with a permanent exhibition on Astronomy. This space is freely accessible to visitors to the Hortus.

Victoria amazonica is the world’s largest water lily and among the largest in the Nymphaeaceae family. The first discovery was in 1801 in Bolivia and it is indigenous to the Amazon River basin’s shallow waters. This species is the national flower of the Republic of Guyana and appears on the country’s coat of arms. The flower is famous for its enormous circular leaves. The common names for the water lily include Amazon water-lily, Victoria-lily, or Giant water lily.

Das ist heute ein Frühlingstag,
der alle Sorgen vergessen lässt.
Einer dieser übermütigen Tage,
an denen man Geigen an den
Himmel hängen möchte
und im veilchenblauen Frühlingskleid
tanzend das Frühstück bereiten.
Heute darf man niemanden ernst nehmen.
Es ist Frühling

This is all around the area of the Bergendal Resort, a hotel of 44 lodges in the middle of the Amazon jungle, 85 km from the capital Paramaribo. A precious place.

Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew
Founded in 1840, from the exotic garden at Kew Park, Kew Gardens has in its collection something over 30,000 different plants whilst the herbarium has over 7,000,000 preserved plants.
The Palm House was built between 1844-1848 by architect Decimus Burton and iron-maker Richard Turner. The Temperate House was built between 1859 – 1899, also by Burton and Turner and is twice as big as the Palm House. This building was restored between the years 2014–2015.
There was a Tea House but it was burnt down in 1913 by suffragettes.
The Orangery was designed by Sir William Chambers and finished in 1761 as part of the original Kew Park. It proved to be too dark to grow oranges and these were finally removed in 1841. It is now a restaurant.
The Waterlily House, again Richard Turner provided the ironwork and the building was completed 1852. Originally built to contain the plant ‘Victoria amazonica’, the largest water lily, it didn’t suit the plant and it was moved to a smaller building. Today there are many different water lilies and a place definitely worth visiting.
The Pagoda was also designed by Sir William Chambers and built in 1762. It is 164ft high and 49ft wide at the bottom. There are 253 steps, it has been closed for many years, then reopened in 2006 for a short while now is closed again. It was supposed to be opened in early 2017 after renovation work, this date now extended to early 2018.
Kew Palace was built by Samuel Fortrey, a Dutch merchant, around 1631. It was later purchased by King George III. This is another building that has had major renovation work done. The leading conservation firm of Donald Insall Assoc. completed the work by 2006.
There are many other Houses or Galleries to visit other than those mentioned, Queen Charlotte’s Cottage, The Alpine House, Nash Conservatory, Princess of Wales Conservatory, Rhizotron, The Japanese Gateway, The Minka House, The Marianne North Gallery and The Treetop Walkway.
A most worthwhile place to visit.

Flower, leaves and flower bud of the Victoria amazonica.
Flowers bloom white on the first night they open and turn pink on the second night.
When the petals turn from white to a reddish pink colour, it is a sign that the flower has been pollinated.

This is a water lily (victoria amazonica) at the botanical garden in Pamplemousses, Mauritius. It is also called the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden and because this rolls of the tongue people refer to it as the "SSRBG". The leaves can grow up to 3 meter in diameter, the flowers can grow up to 40 cm.
The greenhouse for the Victoria Amazonica is the warmest greenhouse in the Hortus. Victoria Amazonica is the largest species in the water lily family. Older leaves can reach three meters in diameter and carry 40kg. What is special is that the flower only opens at the end of the afternoon, and only blooms for two nights: white the first night with a delicious pineapple scent, the second night pink and odorless. The giant water lily in the Hortus is sown in January every year and planted in February-March: a huge annual

Heavy winds yesterday flipped over the unfolding Amazonica Lily pads. Check out its detailed construction. This is what makes it possible for them to hold a person afloat on the surface!
The Amazonica is the largest member of the water lily family. The lily pads are up to 8 feet across and the large fragrant white to pink blooms have a sweet pineapple-like scent on the first day of its two day lifecycle. The flowers will open at night on the first day being white, then turn pink after being fertilized.
The lily pads are up to 8 feet across and are supported by a ribbed underside and anchored to a submerged stalk allowing the leaf to float on the surface. These stalks can be up to 26 feet long and they embed themselves in the lake or river bottom. This rapid growing plant can expand by up to 20 inches per day. While the upper surface has water repellent properties, the underside is protected from herbivorous fish by its sharp spines. Air becomes trapped between the ribs on the underside, which keeps it afloat.
