Another awesome bird at Bird Kingdom. This one was kind enough to pose for a few photos before flying of again.

This strange dinosaur like bird was one of my most wanted as we canoed into the amazonian jungle at Napo Lodge in Yasuni National Park.

It is the only member of the genus Opisthocomus and is the only extant genus in the family Opisthocomidae.

Genetic studies show that the hoatzin is the last surviving member of a bird line that branched off in its own direction 64 million years ago, shortly after the extinction event that killed the non-avian dinosaurs.

Uncommon in Amazonia

In 1992 Antony Gormley was asked to develop an art project in line with the UN conference on climate problems and the uncertain future of the Amazone forests.

He asked young people from the favelas of Porto Velho to cooperate. With simple instructions, they created 48.000 little figures from local clay.

Exhibited 30 years later in museum Voorlinden, they filled two large exhibition spaces.

Do you care?

This is Parauacu or Amazonian Saki Monkey - Saki monkeys are a secretive group of primates native to the tropical forests of South America. They are often hunted for food, even though their elusive behavior makes them difficult to find. This is a species endemic to the Brazilian Amazon Forest and it is endangered due to the loss of it's habitat and hunting.

“Saki monkeys, like many rain forest primates, are excellent indicators for the health of tropical forest systems.” Dr. Russell A. Mittermeier, President of Conservation International and Chair of the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group.

This is a wild saki monkey photographed at Juma Lodge 3 years ago. Does he have a chance?

Enjoy your weekend.

Parauacu or Amazonian Saki Monkey (Pithecia mittermeieri) - to celebrated the Amazonian Day.

As you may know, the Amazon is one of the most valuable natural heritage sites of all humanity and the largest natural reserve on the planet. With seven million square kilometers, five and a half million of which are forests, the biome is essential for the environmental and climate balance of the planet and the conservation of water resources. It's essencial to our survival. It must be preserved!

Have a Peaceful Thursday!
