This is the mystery new grocer in the Willow Place Shopping Center at 5430 West Broad St, Richmond, VA.
This store opened in 1993 as a Food Lion and closed in 2017. In 2022, construction started on this building to be built as "Grocer at Willow Place" (and shopping the shopping center owner would not disclose the tenant). The tenant still has not been officially disclosed, however the current buildout definitely resembles an Amazon Fresh grocery store. Being the trend with other Amazon Fresh grocery stores under construction, this one has never been completed after Amazon halted the construction of all stores that were being built.

I'm just glad they didn't use plastic bags. Or even worse, that horrible shrink-wrap your amazon books get wrapped in.

For those who like grocery shopping, Amazon Fresh is not for you, but for those like me who hate fighting traffic and crowded aisles, Amazon Fresh is the answer. Yesterday I took our entire grocery list, found all of the items online, ordered them, and this morning before 5:30 AM, nine bins were sitting on our porch.
Goodbye QFC!
The bridge has an incline that's steeper than it looks. There was a man riding a vespa bringing groceries to the town (not in this picture). I wonder if AmazonFresh would ever deliver here. :-) Bagnoregio, Italy.

Checked out the Irvine Amazon Fresh, as well as walked around the bottom half of The Market Place shopping center on 12/1/23.
The Market Place is a very large power center with multiple supermarkets, big box stores, restaurants, and an Edwards Cinemas. The center first opened in 1988 and has seen multiple expansions since. The center is on the border of the Tustin and Irvine city limits, with two ends of the center in different cities. The Irvine side is the side I walked around. Currently, some of the big box stores on this side were recently demolished to make way for new apartments/condos.
The Amazon Fresh at The Market Place opened in 2020 as it's second store, replacing a former Babies R Us. It recently finished a remodel, in order to freshen the store up since the current interiors of Fresh stores weren't very appealing to customers. The store also has an in-store Krispy Kreme, which I would guess to be in response to Albertsons, Vons, Ralphs,Target, etc. having their in-store Starbucks. I definitely appreciate Amazon trying to find another appealing food vendor instead of just copying competition with an in-store Starbucks.
This store no longer uses camera technology to track customers items, but instead uses sensors on their shopping carts. This saves customers from having to scan into the store.

The interior was stripped of all Food Lion buildout entirely in 2023, including the drop ceiling, drywall, and tile flooring, with the space's foundation covered in plastic that's become very moist underneath. The only thing constructed for the would-be new supermarket tenant was a glass entryway with sliding doors on the right side, and if we're going with the theory that it was to become an Amazon Fresh, then this entryway is a feature at some of their other locations. Considering that we're a year removed from when this interior demolition started, I think the possibility of Amazon ever opening here has faded away entirely.

This location opened in November 1992, was expanded in the mid 1990s, and closed on August 1st, 2017. Spirit Halloween operated in this space in September-November 2018 and again in September-November 2020. The store was gutted and renovated in 2023 for a new grocer tenant that never materialized; it's been speculated that Amazon Fresh would be the tenant, but the owners/developers of the shopping center never revealed who the potential occupant was.
Yesterday was our first time visiting this store. It was open on New Years Day.
It was a bit of an adventure. We had to ask for instructions. You enter through a gate with a scan (phone or hand, depending on what you've set up), then after you've collected your items, you scan again to get through the exit gate.
No checkout registers. They say the shelves are weighted and detect what you remove.
The receipt is emailed to you based on the email you provide when you start your account.
The arrival of the receipt was not instantaneous, and in fact what you first receive is a Thank You for having shopped. So, as a first timer, one is inclined to think, "that's it? No itemized receipt?"
It was more than an hour before the receipt came. Initially all you see is the amount spent. It takes perseverance to find the links that lead to the actual list of items purchased, and it's not downloadable (but, of course, copy and paste or screenshots are an option). But it does include full names, prices, and images of the items.
