My seventeen year-old son, like his mother, has a keen eye for neat and unusual things in the wild - from insects to mushrooms, he is always asking about things and pointing them out. And to him I owe this discovery: the Calligrapha, a leaf beetle, from the same general family as various weevils.
It is named ‘Calligrapha’ because of the dark green/black markings on the elytra (the hard shells that cover the wings, as with ladybugs), which are said to resemble artful writing or ornamental designs. The amator is actually one of the least decorative species; others are red and black, or green and black. The eleven segments in the antennae are a species marker.
They eat plants, and can be a bit hard on them, but they are not really destructive. In Canada, they are found (infrequently) in southern and southeastern Ontario - this one was up in North Frontenac, and I reported the location of the discovery after finding very few reports from that part of the world.

For my first visit to britany, I passed by a fisherman as I was looking for a place to set up my tripod. One hour past, when the fisherman came to tell me : "It's a long time to take a shot?" I acknowledged and told him it was a long time to catch no fish. He laughed away and we agreed that amator fisherman or photograph, waiting outside while the sun sets and the night crawls in, could well be our main reason to be out there...

One of them/ both of them, standing there, unaware that they share the moment in thinking and dreaming of another life. Or the life that was supposed to be.
Taken with a broken Orizont Amator camera. The film advance mechanism is not working anymore on this camera so I wind the film for each frame in the dark (which turned out to be not dark enough sometimes).

Esiste una nutrita fetta di fotografi (amatori o professionisti che siano) che crede nello scatto puro, senza ritocco. Io mi sento di appartenere alla seconda parte.. credo che la postproduzione sia solamente il secondo, fondamentale, passaggio dello scatto fotografico. Eresia?? sarà .. purtroppo ho dei grossi limiti tecnici e l'unico modo che ho per superarli è questo! mea culpa! :)

Quest'anno sono, infatti, attese oltre 1800 imbarcazioni, timonate da professionisti, amatori e appassionati di mare pronti a darsi battaglia lungo un nuovo percorso di 13,2 miglia.
Gli Astrophytum hanno da sempre esercitato un fascino particolare nei confronti degli amatori di cactacee, fascino che è andato crescendo da quando sono stati immessi sul mercato numerosi, spettacolari ibridi.
Nel 1827 Thomas Coulter raccolse nello stato messicano di Hidalgo una pianta che oggi chiamiamo A. ornatum, ma che fu descritta nel 1828 da De Condolle col nome di Echinocactus ornatus. Nel 1839 Charles Lemaire attribuì il nome di A. myriostigma ad una pianta raccolta nel nord del Messico. Nello stesso anno H. G. Galeotti chiama Cereus callicoche, che diverrà A. myriostigma, una pianta raccolta in San Luis PotosÃ. Nel 1845 anche J. G. Zuccarini descrisse come Echinocactus asterias una pianta raccolta da Karwinsky due anni prima.
L'Astrophytum (Lemaire 1839) è un genere di pianta succulenta appartenente alla famiglia delle cactacee. Il suo nome deriva dal greco astèr (stella), per la caratteristica forma a costole che dall'alto lo fa somigliare ad una stella e phytòn (pianta). È originario di alcuni areali delimitati del Messico e vive normalmente in terreni semi-aridi e leggermente calcarei.
Gli Astrophytum hanno un fusto globuloso formato da quattro ad otto sezioni divise tra di loro da solchi più o meno profondi. I fiori gialli o giallo-rossi si sviluppano dalle areole presenti alla sommità del fusto.
L'elemento maggiormente caratterizzante gli Astrophytum rispetto alle altre cactaceae è la presenza di numerosi puntini bianchi in rilievo sparsi in misura più o meno rilevante sul fusto di tutte le specie appartenenti a questo genere. Il loro ruolo non è ancora stato ben definito dalla letteratura scientifica, tuttavia si ritiene che la loro funzione principale sia quella di favorire la mimetizzazione della piante negli ambienti rocciosi in cui sono normalmente inserite, allo scopo di ridurre la possibilità di distruzione da parte di animali fitofagi. Si ritiene che altre funzioni possano essere legate alla protezione del fusto dai raggi solari e alla capacità di trattenere più efficacemente l'umidità .
L’Astrophytum ornatum è una pianta globosa, solitaria, che con gli anni diviene cilindrica, potendo superare anche un metro di altezza. Presenta un fusto di colore verde scuro, che con l’età diviene sugheroso, areole con lanuggine giallastra. Le costolature, a volte spiravate, sono per lo più 8, con spigoli acuti. Le spine, di cui una centrale e 5-10 radiali, sono robuste, di colore giallo, ma che col tempo possono divenire grigie o marroni. I fiori sono gialli, con un diametro di 6-8 cm, pistillo pure giallo, frutto deiscente. L’habitat è identificabile nel Messico centrale negli Stati di Queretaro, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, San Luis PotosÃ.
Molti botanici ritengono di non dover attribuire ad A. ornatum v. mirbelii lo stato varietale, stante le scarse differenze con la pianta tipo, anche se geograficamente isolata dal punto di vista riproduttivo.
