A long overdue trip to the farm was most unsettling as my father-in-law has been overtaken by the cruelest of diseases. Alzheimer's has stolen his ability to recall even the most basic things in his remarkable life. He is beyond the point when he is able to simply recognize those he has known and loved. A person who had the storytellers gift just a few years ago is now unable to share his precious life events.
This was a shocking encounter to say the least. Two revelations for me took hold during our short visit. First was the obvious in that this disease was winning in it's attack on John's mental functions and it is maddening. The second is I just did not know just how strong my Mother-in-law is. Her love for him has always been obvious but her conviction and care for him through this period is most humbling.
She has grown where he has diminished and endures despite the confusion that is now his reality. Her faith in God is where she draws strength and it is obviously needed daily.
There are several Diseases that need to be conquered and dementia and Alzheimer's have to be towards the top of this list.
Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease (AD), also known as Alzheimer disease, or just Alzheimer's, accounts for 60% to 70% of cases of dementia.
It is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and gets worse over time.
The most common early symptom is difficulty in remembering recent events (short-term memory loss). As the disease advances, symptoms can include: problems with language, disorientation (including easily getting lost), mood swings, loss of motivation, not managing self care, and behavioural issues. As a person's condition declines, she or he often withdraws from family and society. Gradually, bodily functions are lost, ultimately leading to death. Although the speed of progression can vary, the average life expectancy following diagnosis is three to nine years.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most prevalent reason of dementia that has inflicted an approximate 5.3 million individuals in the United States.

Ooh, stop
With your feet in the air and your head on the ground
Try this trick and spin it, yeah
Your head will collapse
But there's nothing in it
And you'll ask yourself
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Way out in the water
See it swimmin'?
I was swimmin' in the Caribbean
Animals were hiding behind the rock
Except the little fish
But they told me, he swears
Tryin' to talk to me koi koy
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Where is my mind?
Way out in the water
See it swimmin'?

One of my favorite photos and one of my favorite songs.
Copied from comments: In my mind, i imagined this man looking back at the blur of events in his life. Since then, my beloved grandmother was afflicted with the evil scourge of Alzheimer's disease and this photo kind of took on a more ominous and scary vibe. Less bittersweet and more sad. I think that's way it's so personal to mE.
This is an older endeavor from me. Back when I first move to LA I used to take my old Canon to work and take pictures at lunch. This looks like it may have been scanned from a print but I'm not sure.
At the "End to Alzheimer's" annual walk, people carry different colored "flowers" that symbolize someone who passed away or someone they are currently caring for.

Dementia, Alzheimer, it can happen to all of us.
Let's take better care of people in nursing homes
They are still real people, even if they are 'Lost' ..

LE MANI DELL'ALTRO

This is my sister who developed Alzheimer at 58. This is one way she deals with it. I purposely made the photo a little out of focus and dark. She is now 65 and struggling.
Une peau mangée de sillons profonds
parsemée de quelques flocons
sur les joues, le menton
un visage de terre d'hiver
et dedans une histoire de 88 ans
que la brume consume, l'effaçant doucement
Paysage d'une vie déshabillée, dénudée, dénuée d'idées.
Rien que le silence de l'absence
Mais parfois s'allume une lune
dans les cieux des ces yeux
pâle lueur, flamme incertaine
fulgurance intense, la douleur au cœur
s'arrimant pour quelques instants
si courts si lourds d'amour
échange d'espoir avant la nuit noire.

For numerous years I've participated in the annual walk to end Alzheimer's. The walk is so well organized with kids from local high schools cheering us along the way and a variety of strategically placed musicians too. For those interested, I wrote a short story about my relationship with my Dad in his final years with the disease that was published in a literary journal. Click here and then move the slider bar to Page 80.
Part of Grayson Perry's Who Are You? exhibition in the national Portrait Gallery in London, glazed ceramic pot.
Perry's comment: Christopher Devas has Alzheimers disease. He was an immensely capable businessman, magistrate & sailor. The tragedy for his wife Veronica is that not only is Alzheimers robbing him of his memory & identity, it is also destroying a large portion of their shared memories. Close couples are joint custodians of each others experiences. Veronica has dubbed the disease 'Altzy'; I have portrayed it as a demonic figure snipping up all their family snaps.
A powerful image.

Myosotis, other wise known as the "forget me not", is a symbol used by Alzheimers charities and for awareness of the desease.
This was taken in the garden earlier in the year. And is dedicated to my Father who had Alzheimers and lost his battle the night before I made this submission.
