One of the more dramatic sunrises I experienced while in Arches NP. It happened to be the first sunrise I had the opportunity to head out for after a late arrival the prior night.
I look forward to a return trip to Arches, probably during the winter to avoid the hassles with tourism.
Rob Elliott, a wonderful artist, takes a moment out from a nap to aknowledge the camera. Minutes after this snap he was back asleep dreaming, no doubt about summer scenes to turn into magnificent watercolours.

I was in Montana visiting a friend, and we were on our way north from Billings, heading to a little town called Jordan. We stopped along the way to do a little bit of catfish fishing, and as we were leaving at around dusk I saw this gorgeous little fox cub run across the street into a den. I pulled out my camera and focused on the entrance, only to see him pop up in a second entrance on the other side of the den. I refocused, and he moved to the first entrance- but this time with his sibling. I finally decided I could spend all night swiveling back and forth between entrances so I just focused on one end of the den and hoped for the best. He popped up one last time, and this was the only shot I got. It was a good one.
Thank you very much for viewing my work, and thank you VERY MUCH for almost 2.2 MILLION views!!

If a thing can go wrong you may rest assured that one of these characters will find an efficient way for it to do so. Rob, Mark, and John and Moon's hiding in there somewhere too.
The wimmin folk in this building don't want to pose for my camera. Can you imagine, eh?

The mighty and raging Napanee River, I have just discovered, sleeps at night. Who knew, eh?
An otherwise boring scene in day-time takes on a whole new character at night. Hmm, interesting.
I hate to tell you how many times Moon wandered through in the foreground during all the exposures for this HDR. Ghost dog, hee hee.

Rob and the Door Knob. Silly me, I couldn't think of another title for this one. I took the shot just before Rob left this evening.
Seems that my ancient Crown flash unit still works somewhat. A few more like it and I could do some portrait lighting, eh.

It's too damned easy for a person to slip through the cracks into obscurity just because of aging. Old farts are too often invisible. That's wrong, just plain wrong!

At the Pioneer Gas station in Napanee.
It's been quite a while since I've taken a picture and it feels good to get back into the swing of things. This old fellow, whose name I didn't get just walked into the station as I was leaving didn't mind my snapping off a few quick shots and then disappeared.

Ya gotta love Moon's ability to hold a pose for HDR triplets, eh?
Still not ready to try making a purdy picture.
Would you invite this discardable example of humanity into your home to make photographs of your little snowflake?

Digital Photography 101, day one, lesson one.
Well, you see, Callum, the light goes in here. Got it? And it's trapped in there and it never comes out again cuz a few pixels ate it. Got it? OK, tomorrow you'll learn all there is to know about HDR.
The Minolta I used to make this selfie is still the best source of chromatic aberration I've ever seen, but for this shot who cares!

A happy picture at long bloody last. (OK, it's just a snapshot, but it's a happy one!) Could I be getting out of my funk? Sure hope so. On the other hand it could just be the ol' bipolar thing pullin' it's nasty tricks. Oh well.
A very rare image of Moon wearing a leash… it was a desperate attempt to get off an HDR triplet. The nice thing about a leash on Moon is that he KNOWS that when he's wearing one of those things that he's being encouraged (what a lovely word 'encouraged' is) to be a home-body. Works almost every time.
Of all the downtown doughnoughts our little doom and gloom dorf has on offer, Mr. Arney is one of the very few it's possible to carry on a conversation with that doesn't suddenly veer into another direction with every breath taken. So whenever we strike up a chat it's refreshing to know that its beginning, middle, and end will all have a common thread.
Allen is making plans to leave Napanee and there are a few souvenir photos he'd like to take along with him; this one and the two below which he 'art directed'. I'm proud that he chose me as his photographer.

My funk may be on the wane, but there's no point wasting a half-decent image, hee hee.

Charlie sitting on his stoop. And while he's doing that I'm giving him a ride in NIK.
IMG_4879_80_81_tonemapped.psd
Camera settings for this shot were such that it was underexposed on the order of two stops. Had the camera original been set to TIFF or JPEG this would have counted as a ruined shot. However, as per usual I shoot only in RAW format and as a result was still able to pull a decent picture out of the frame.
Labour Day weekend, Sunday mourning (spelling intentional) back in the selfie mode/mood. Rather be shootin' neked wimin fer cryiin' out loud or for sobbing quietly.

If ya don't ask 'em if ya can shoot 'em they sure as heck don't come along and blurt it out The worst thing a potential model can say is no. Now if you have rejection issues like I do that in and of itself can be fairly devastating, but in reality it ain't no deal. What I'm trying to say here is that I'm glad I asked this man if I could shoot his incredibly interesting face.

Moon at noon playing hide and seek with the dog catcher. He's supposed to be wearing his 'tags' and a leash. Moon does not like being on a leash, so we spend a fair amount of time hiding in the alleys of the town.

As you walk through life happy as a lark without a care in the world and you happen to pass a blind alley from which emerges a rabid Pit Bull whose daily menu lists the blue plate special as being Fat Man's Ass, well, it just ruins your whole day.
Because my dinky apartment isn't large enough to accommodate a mobility scooter apparently Ontario Assistive Devices won't grant me a new one. Sure, they realize I need one to go shopping and get to my various medical appointments and that's all well and good; it's a shame they imply, that I don't happen to live in huge luxury apartment wherein I could actually drive a mobility scooter because then they'd give me one in a flash.
I'm back in my dark place.
The unfortunate blind man who possed for this picture is the first one to bear the brunt of my renewed frustration and nearly terminal anger.

Out in Mission, BC there lives a man name Gerald Tapp who owns a number of old scrap marine vessels that he keeps on a Fraser River waterfront property he owns.
Among the derelict vessels he has there is the Queen of Sidney- one of the original two ferries built for BC Ferries.
I'm not good with cars....an old Chevy? Plymouth? sitting on the dock with the Queen of Sidney in the background.

I wish Wallace's Drugs would find a different colour of 'yech' to paint their exterior walls.
Shadows within highlights within shadows within highlights. Ain't this HDR stuff grand? Getting harder and harder to find myself in these selfies too.

Deacon Dave is as close to a paragon of virtue as anyone's likely to find in Napanee. He feeds the hungry three times a week at the Morning Star Mission. He feeds souls too.

Juggernaut, 2017 . Juggernaut is the Anglicized form of Jagannath (“Lord of the Universe”), the Hindu god. Early travelers reported devotees being crushed to death by the wheels of the huge chariots used to transport the idol in religious processions, creating our modern concept of an indifferent, massively unstoppable force. . Napanee is sponsoring its First Annual Photo Contest and it's FREE. Try to remember the word 'free' as I give you a few of the contest's rules and highlights. Everything inside double quotes is from our town fathers.
"Entry Fee: FREE!"
"Copyright: All entrants must sign off, giving the Town of Greater Napanee the rights to the photo being submitted. Photographs entered may be used (in any form - electronic or print) within promotional campaigns to highlight Greater Napanee."
"Photo entries will NOT be returned and all photographs entered become the property of the Town of Greater Napanee to be used however seen fit. The Town of Greater Napanee reserves the right to use and NOT use all submitted photo images at our discretion without paying compensation to the photographer, contest entrant, or the photo subjects."
And they want model releases thrown into the bargain too! When I read that I nearly doubled over in laughter.
"If there are people in the photograph that are recognizable you must complete a Photo Release Form indicating you have that person’s permission to use the photograph."
It's pretty easy to see what our benevolent town fathers are doing: they're getting ready to publish a few brochurs and spruce up their website and save tonnes of money in the process. Free my a** these low-life politicos are behaving like the supporting layer at the bottom of the barrel of dirty political tricks!
I don't know about the rest of the world of photographers, but copyright in my work is pretty valuable. It's valuable enough that laws around the world have been written to protect it and to use my copyright to pay for entrance to a free contest strikes me as being rather a high price to pay.
OK, that's enough of a rant for today.
A few days ago this woman asked me, "Are you a real photographer?"
I was flummoxed. No rejoinder. Nothing. All I had was a great big question mark in the middle of my confused little mind.

I was in the hospital again yesterday. An ambulance took me away and I don't know why. When I woke up in the hospital I wasn't a model patient. It was only after the police arrived that the hospital staff fully understood that I wasn't much interested in being on their guest list. In retrospect that may not have been the smartest thing I've ever done.

I really should know her name; after all, once a woman has seen you in your underwear riding about on your mobility scooter in the dead of night it's only fitting that introductions be made and names be remembered.
I have since learned her name is Mrs. Todd.

With apologies to Nancy Sinatra.
These Crocs weren't meant for walkin'
Yet that's what they're to do,
I'm gonna take these Crocs, Nanc, and,
And walk right out on you.
Here's wishin' you a gooder life,
And me some peace at last
Let's get this thing done over with
And both forget the past.
