At high altitude, above 3000 m, the sky rarely disappoints. In the scenery of Lake Titicaca, the spectacle is often incredibly beautiful.
I thought quail were bound by law to only stay on the ground and run across the road, and into the bushes, every time you came across them. Glad this fellow was a rebel...

WONDERFUL FACTS - There was a time when there was no bacteria that would decompose a tree.
The trees that existed 300 million years ago do not resemble the trees we have on Earth now ...
These trees could grow extremely tall, but they had very shallow root systems, so fell over very easily. At the time, no microbes existed that could decompose these trees, so as they fell, they stacked up upon each other, eventually creating what one could consider a blessing or a curse….coal. 🍂

This is the largest of the Phrygian rock-cut facade monuments, measuring 17 m x 16.50 m. It represents the front of a Phrygian megaton type building with low-pitched roof. It is known locally as “Yazılıkaya” (Written Rock) because of the Paleo-Phrygian inscriptions carved on the rock above it along the right side, and in the niche. The upper inscription dedicates the monument to a King Midas, and so it is also known as the “Midas Monument.” The niche probably contained an image of the Phrygian Mother Goddess, and the word “Matar” (Mother) is inscribed there. The monument was carved sometime between the 8th and 6th century BC.
Phrygian Yazılıkaya is located in the area of the Phrygian Valley, in Eskişehir Province, on a plateau that also bears the name Yazılıkaya, at an altitude of over 1,300 meters above sea level. The site dominates the plain, rising about 70 meters above the surrounding terrain. It covers an area 650 meters long, and 320 meters wide.

WONDERFUL FACTS -- For years, scientists have suspected that birds can sleep in mid-flight, as many species of birds are known to fly non-stop for days or even weeks. ... Now, however, according to a new study from the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, researchers have finally found evidence that birds do indeed sleep while flying. (Aug 5, 2016) 🐧

The lake in the heart of the hiking, running and mountainbiking mountain area Corviglia can be used as an oasis of relaxation or as a running track for the individual altitude training.
The lake of Lej Alv above Marguns captures and stores the water that flows down the mountain and the Val Schlattain during the snow melt. In winter the lake is used as a reservoir for the artificial snow on the mountainside; in summer it provides a wonderful excursion destination for runners, mountain bikers and hikers. You can reach the lake via the mountain station of the Marguns gondola or the mountain station at the Corviglia funicular. Given the altitude, swimming in the lake is an option for hard-core bathers only; but its shores do provide a delightful relaxed setting for a picnic lunch as you take in the views of the Engadin mountains and savour the crisp mountain air.

After leaving Cusco, we are on our way to Lake Titicaca and cross the Peruvian Altiplano. We stop at the Raya pass, at the respectable altitude of 4325 m (14,222 ft)!
The landscape is grandiose. A picturesque little church on the edge of the railway gives a touch of color to the overall picture.

Shuzheng Falls (树正瀑布) is one of the four major waterfalls in Jiuzhaigou. Though it is the smallest, its grace and beauty is still amazing. The waterfall is at 2,295M altitude, 25M high and 72M wide.
As always, thanks for stopping by and viewing, I appreciate your comments, visits and invitations.
Viewed from Belmont Plateau late on a winter afternoon.
An aircraft, probably a passenger jet, was caught near the middle of the photo apparently aimed at the office towers. No accidents were reported. The altitude looks quite low. Probably just took off from Philadelphia International Airport.

Hypopyrrhus pyrohypogaster (Red-bellied Grackle / Cacique candela)
The red-bellied grackle is endemic to Colombia where it is found in all three Andean ranges at altitudes of 800 to 2,400m (2,600 to 7,900ft) above sea level.
Its natural habitat is tropical forest, but the trees are increasingly being felled for timber and to make way for agriculture, and little virgin forest remains within its range.
H. pyrohypogaster was formerly classified as "endangered" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature but in 2012 the threat level was lowered to "vulnerable". This is on the basis that, although its forest habitat remains under pressure, it has been found at some new locations where it was not known before. The total population is now estimated to be in the range 2,500 to 9,999 individuals.
Echinopsis pachanoi (syn. Trichocereus pachanoi) — known as San Pedro cactus — is a fast-growing columnar cactus native to the Andes Mountains at 2,000–3,000 m (6,600–9,800 ft) in altitude.[2][3] It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador and Peru,[4][5] and it is cultivated in other parts of the world. Uses for it include traditional medicine and traditional veterinary medicine, and it is widely grown as an ornamental cactus. It has been used for healing and religious divination in the Andes Mountains region for over 3,000 years.

At the high altitude of Ladakh, one of the greatest attraction for tourists is riding the double-humped Bactrian camels- a remnant of the Silk trade period when Ladakh had a live trade with Bactria (present day Afghanistan and Tajikistan).
Domesticated Bactrian camels have served as pack animals in inner Asia since ancient times. With its tolerance for cold, drought, and high altitudes, it enabled the travel of caravans on the Silk Road.

Tso Moriri or Lake Moriri or Mountain Lake - is a lake in the Ladakhi part of the Changthang Plateau (literally: northern plains) in Kashmir, India. The lake and surrounding area are protected as the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve.
The lake is at an altitude of 4,522 m (14,836 ft). It is the largest of the high altitude lakes entirely within India and entirely within Ladakh in this Trans-Himalayan biogeographic region. It is about 26 km (16 miles) north to south in length and 3 to 5 km (two to three miles) wide. The lake has no outlet at present and the water is brackish though not very perceptible to taste.
The lake is fed by springs and snow-melt from neighboring mountains. Most water enters the lake in two major stream systems, one entering the lake from the north, the other from the southwest. (wikipedia)
