Overcast here today so I left this out for double the time of yesterday’s image.
I could just as easily have taken a flower and placed it on top of light sensitive paper prepared with the cyanotype solution, flattening it with glass to make an image. Instead I have made a contact print from a large negative from an old shot of mine of plum blossoms emerging in Spring.
What happens in this process is that the solution of ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide is affected immediately by the UV light from the sun. One needs to experiment with exposure times - this one was just under three minutes. When washed after exposure, the water removes all the solution that has not been exposed, leaving large sections of white paper. The Hydrogen Peroxide bath then brings out the Prussian Blue and sets the image.
This process was first employed in 1841, and one of the first people to use it seriously was English botanist Anna Atkins (1799-1871). In fact, Atkins became the first person to make a book of photographs, "Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions" in October 1843.

Cyanotype print in infusion of hazelnut leaves for get a brown toning. Compared to coffee toning, it stains paper less and no bleach bath is needed.

This is a cyanotype photographic print made using techniques dating from 1842. The labor-intensive skill of cyanotype printing – one of the oldest photographic processes – is combined with modern digital technology and transforms the casual, ephemeral, disposable digital image into a unique, hand-crafted photographic print.

VanDyke Brown print from digital negative, using the classic VDB formula on Bergger COT 320 paper. The image is 8x10 (approx A4) size. I used a hand adjusted curve based on Peter Mrhrar and his free Easy Digital Negative (EDN) process. The digital negative was made on generic inkjet transparency medium with a Canon Pixma Pro-100 printer. The image was exposed in a home made enclosure containing ten UV tubes.
This print was made using techniques patented in 1895. I enjoy the challenges of using the same chemistry and techniques patented over 125 years ago. This labor-intensive practice transforms a casual, ephemeral, disposable digital image into a unique, hand-crafted photographic print.

This is from an original 120 film negative shot on Ilford Delta 400 with Mamiya RZ67 Pro II and 110mm f/2.8, shot wide open, negative developed in Caffenol C-L/S.

26mins UV exposure
4mins in 1.5l warm tap water with 3/4 tsp citric acid
Two further 5min washes in warm tap
1hr soak in tap water.
Dried overnight
Also a test of masking of the edges of the prints for clean and straight edges. This achieved using the method advocated by Bill Schwab on Youtube - a combination of masking the paper and masking the negative.
I used yellow low-tack Frog tape to mask out the edges of the paper, adding some copier paper on top to cover the rest of the paper. I tested two types of tape: this Frog tape, and also the 3M Purple Low-tack tape. I estimated that the Frog tape was just marginally less tacky than the 3M, but it is entirely possible that they're exactly the same tapes branded differently and coloured differently.
I used some strips of Ruby Lith to mask out the edges of the negative too.
Works well, though I have 3 observations:
Registration between negative and paper is a little more difficult with the ruby lith in place;
The Frog tape is pretty low tack but great care is still needed when removing it. Removing some of its tackiness is a good idea, but I wouldn't recommend using a piece of clothing to do this, since the possibility of extra fibres on the print/in the sensitiser at the edges is not good;
Masking paper and negative takes quite a while: I estimate to do 6 sheets of paper probably took me 30mins, but part of that was me figuring out exactly how I was going to do it; masking the negative also takes time, and needs to be re-done for each negative, so do a run of the same negative before moving to another.
