I took this photo in May, at a park in North Vancouver, the same day as I took my "Round Trip" image. This one is an in camera 9 image multiple exposure, using the Pep Ventosa, "in the round" technique.

A couple of days before taking this shot, I had attempted some geese in flight multiple exposure shots ...but forgot to hit the button for multiple exposure and came up with a wonderful series of single shot geese in flight...oh well.

A few days later and with resounding clarity about flipping the switch in mind, another set of geese flew over the hillside on their way to the farmer's pasture nearby. Needless to say, when I got this second opportunity I attempted the shot. I was pretty happy with the placement outcome so here it is.

Hoping all are well and thank you always for the visits

Kylo Ren got another tantrum that led to the fact that the places around these two First Order Stormtrooper began to fall apart. The only thing they had left in a pocket, was the escape route away from the scene.

This is a part of the small series I did earlier this month. This scene here is the second photograph for the series. I'm uploading them in reverse order just because I want them to show up in my stream in a proper way. I'm still working on the first one, and hopefully I can show it to you later.

For me, it suits very well to the story told so far, that there are individuals among the Stormtroopers. I like it very much, it gives me room to play with around the original story.

Kylo Ren got another tantrum that led to the fact that the places around these two First Order Stormtrooper began to fall apart. The only thing they had left in a pocket, was the escape route away from the scene... but oh no, there's a huge pylon, that got down a second ago blocking the way! Will they be able to jump over it, like in the movies...

Make sure you check out the follow-up for this scene which is in fact a shot taken about 3-5 seconds later.

This particular scene was easy to pick from the session. I think particles around a fallen pylon looks really like it got down just a sec ago. I guess, it makes the whole scene a more alive.

Boba Fett. An iconic bounty hunter. Also, all-time favorite of mine.

I've spent hours just to trying to figure out a good angle for this fella. And then another hour for lighting. And now I have baking powder all over the place! Who is a volunteer for clean up?!!

Everything is all in-camera. No photoshop tricks.

They're in the snowy plains of Hoth. Doing what they're doing, trying to find the Rebels, the usual stuff they are programmed to do these days. For the sake of anyone, this duo were seen from miles away and it was very easy to hid yourself, before they were near you.

All I can say is that they still do look majestic after all these years.

After the run, the two Stormtroopers found himself the perfect hideaway. Here they could hide out for so long that dust settles and the stink operation for Darth Vader is taken care of someone else.

The hideout was so perfect, it even offered a space for athletic activities, eg. football. Here they spent the best time together and have already planned to establish a Death Star Football Club, but unfortunately the use of a garbage can as a football, creates a clatter that Darths was easy to find their hiding place a floor below his command center.

Previously in this series: Death Star Bingo, Stormtroopers With Attitude 2 and Stormtroopers With Attitude. There's also an outtake titled as Death Star Bingo.

Is there a more wretched hive of scum and villainy place than Mos Eisley? I believe there isn't.

I've been wanting to photograph a towns and spaceports from the Star Wars Trilogy for a long time now. A certain spaceport town in my mind, I did my research and came to a conclusion, where I didn't wanted to build a part of a town in Lego minifigs scale, as I simply don't have space to store it and it probably wouldn't offer a much of a photographic challenge, either. So, here is the first view of a town called Mos Eisley, in microscale!

I went closer to a droid, that were standing in the field of snowy Hoth. I've assumed, its battery dried out a long time. While I was moving around the droid, I putted my cameras down and all of sudden this thing moved!

One of the cameras I own, is the one which I often abandon on a remote area for a few weeks to check, whether there is any life on the area I'm thinking to move next. I think they call these a trail/game camera? Anyway, it has this automatic function to take a photo, if anything comes up in the viewfinder on the area it's pointed. This same camera here were pointing upwards near the droid and it automatically took this shot! Kinda lucky, I was.

What happened next? Well, that's another story. :)

He turned his head quickly. He was just checking no one was following him. There were some shady business going on and he wanted to secure some privacy for it. But, I was there with my camera. He didn't see me. I'm sure, he didn't have a clue I was there, but if he ever drops on my stream, then he will know. I guess he is okay with it, since this happened a month ago and I never show to anyone this photo of him.

Ahh, Boba Fett and his untold shady businesses. I wish I've could open up a more of this in the future. A story behind the bounty hunter. Well, that's some ambitious goal to achieve, so I'd just might end up showing you photo from here and another from there. It works for me and I'm sure you're okay with it, too.

Moon is turning yellow. The moment is silent and dangerous. Anything can happen in next following minutes.

I've acquired several Tusken Raiders minifigs earlier this year. And I mean, these oldies, with a cylinder heads. I have those new ones somewhere, too, but there's a slight nostalgic feel in these oldies. If you don't know what I'm talking about, compare it to this one. And there you go! I was after a widescreen scene on this one today. It didn't worked like I was hoping for, so I've changed my plan to a portrait of a Tusken Raider in the Night.

This is an artistic version of a portrait of Han Solo. This particular frame came as a bonus from the session with Han, Bossk and Boba Fett. In case you're wondering, this is pretty much all in-camera. All I did is that I tweaked the coloring from the raw-file as it usually done, when you're dealing with material straight from the camera sensor. The 'effect' you'll see here were real.

What I personally like in this frame is, it's peaceful moment, although Han is carrying his DL-44 heave blaster pistol. Also, I dig the mix of photography and a painting-like-feel. I have always thought, I need a brush and canvas to achieve this kind of piece, I've never thought I've could make it happen with my camera.

When the chicken walkers were not freeze of ice and cold, they were pretty darn good vehicles to go from point A to B. At least, that's how the Snowtrooper trio used them on friday nights and especially when they're looking for Hoth After Dark -pub. So far, the search continues!

A bit more explosive photo this time. These sessions are always full of surprises. I mean, you have an idea in your head, but you never know the results, until you crawl your session from your memory card on a big screen.

"I'm in control. I make the rules now." - Cad Bane

This is actually my first Throwback Thursday photo, ever! And I would like to...

Enough of a chitchat! this is an old school from January, 2013. I've been playing with the new version of it for awhile, as a oldie doesn't do a justice for a bounty hunter as it should. This is not perfect and flawless, but it's Lego and all in-camera. All in-camera, you ask? It means what you see here is what you get, the effect around the Cad Bane character is really happening during I was photographing this. I do my shots like that, but I'm sure you already knew that, right!

A portrait of 2-1B Medical Droid.

Rey. The Scavenger from Jakku. A new hope for the galaxy.

When I was finished with Tusken, I've pretty much chose to continue within the set-up by making a few changes to it and here’s what I’ve got in return. There we’re lots of potential frames from the session and I’m sure I can ‘play’ with these later, but this particular frame did the tricks on me. I can’t tell you the exact reason, why I chose this frame, maybe it’s because it sums up the technique, I’ve used for it, leaving out just a bit something, which were found on those other frames. I’m pretty sure, I will continue to playing with this session on some other day!

The annual red deer rut is one of my favourite times of year. The guttural, almost prehistoric sound of bellowing stags isn't something you forget in a hurry!

This majestic stag started his daily shouting rituals in the early hours, and had already amassed quite the group of females. I think he's going to have quite a good rut this year!

Taken all in camera using natural light, not Photoshop.

Nikon D810 | Nikon 500mm f/4.0 VR (sadly the EXIF shows differently as this was a batch export from Photoshop!)

Whilst the 2021 deer rut is just around the corner, last years' fawns are still taking up much of their mothers attention.

This female fallow deer was already being shadowed by an overly-eager male, but wasn't giving him a glance!

As Han run away from the carbon freezing chamber, all of a sudden, he heard steps coming towards him. He had to stop and hid himself behind the corner, before he can continue his escape. He is a bit afraid of the situ as there is no good plan for the escape itself, but that's how the greatest smuggler deals these situations!

Another cinematic session with Han Solo. You might remember an earlier scene I did with him from a few weeks ago. Running and firing a blaster like that is very dangerous.

We were treated to some gorgeous light whilst watching the red deer rut last year and, very luckily, a shaft of it happened to fall on this stag whilst he was taking a drink. This is taken all in camera by underexposing by two stops to only expose for the highlights.

The red deer rut is now well and truly underway... this stunning stag had already amassed a sizeable group of females and I think he will have a very successful season this year!

This is a highly artistic vision of Darth Vader guarding the space.

I have to admit that this Lego Darth Vader minifigure is just fantastic! Yes, it is a small, black and peppery but you get an incredible photo session with this guy every time when you just dig him out of the box. Also, I think this could work as a small poster quite nicely!

I'm at Death Star. I have a widescreen movie camera with me. It only takes still pictures, but it is only a good thing for me, because these guys are very difficult to get act in front of the camera. If you ask even a little something, response is usually a sneer. However, I captured this Death Star Trooper on film, when he was going repair the Emperor's chair. I guess it's jammed again.

And, here’s Tusken Raider, also often called as sand people. They were a culture of nomadic, primitive sentients indigenous to Tatooine, where they were often hostile to local settlers. I was a bit afraid of photographing him, but I was wrong. I thought I’ve could get some action photos with him, but no. He was kind a mellow, which made things a much easier for me.

After I was done with U-3PO, I continued with the set-up and put this tusken raider from 2002 Lego catalog in front of the lens. It took awhile, before I managed to grab this photo of him. He looked a bit unsure of the things going around him, maybe he was just afraid of my lens, I’m not sure, since, I don’t understand their language. Luckily, I had a protocol droid near me, which were my interpreter in the end. However, he did not ever told me his reasons for his behaviour.

The series continues: Next I'll introduce you the Emperor Palpatine aka Darth Sidious.

Previously in this series: Darth Vader and TIE Pilot.

This must be one of the quickies shot ever made! It took about 20 minutes to get this. I guess I was lucky, cause I had everything from the previous set-up still dismantled and I just replaced the character here. It's really quite a strange experience as a whole if you think about it. You were thinking to you use a lot more time for photography and all of a sudden you're all done! I was lucky, because this is a rare situation.

During the red deer rutting season, the less dominant stags face quite a hard time. Without the ability to create and hold a harem of their own, they seem perpetually sat on the edge of larger groups where they look to avoid attracting the attention of the dominant male.

This particular stag wasn't quite so lucky... as he tried to court a lone female he was spotted and chased right into a lake! Luckily, deer are good swimmers, but his pride certainly took a beating!

“Oct 5, 2020 at 8:59:59am, I Was Enchanted” A 20 year dream realized. On Oct 5th I was packed up a ready to go with two of my hiking buddies to head out for a 9 day high mountain fall color trip to chase the golden large before the snows came. We were all packed up for car camping, so we could climb a trail for sunset, night hike out, and sleep in the cars, then move to another location and repeat. But we had a dream to score a walk up permit to go to the Amazing Enchantments. I have been lucky enough to score a permit to backpack the Enchantments 6 different times in my 20 year career as a professional photographer, but I have never been able to capture a shot of Prusik Peak and Gnome Tarn with the Golden Larches. I even made it up one other time during Golden Larch Time, but there was already two feet of snow on the ground and Gnome tarn was buried, so no shot. So at 5am on October 5th, the three of us all manned our computers hoping to see the lottery permits for the week pop up, as they release them randomly between 5am -9am. We had all given up, we hat not even seen a core permit pop up. I got it in my head that they might release some at the very last second. I refreshed the screen, put in the pertinent information, and hovered over the last number, and entered it at 8:59:59, and 16 permits popped up, and I snagged one for us! They were gone in less than 5 seconds. Oh My God! We are going to the Enchantments! I texted my two buddies, they could not believe it! So change of plans, now we all had to pack up our backpacks and head to Icicle Creek to prep for the hike the next day. And would a first day hike it was. I carried a 62 Pound Pack, 14 miles, something like 6000 feet of elevation gain, to arrive at this spot just in time for Alpenglow. And finally I realized a 20 year dream to capture this shot and Put it In the Bank!!! Shout out to the two guys that joined me on this adventure, Bryan Moore and Randy Gemar. What an adventure it was to see the Enchantments again, the larch were unbailable! Thank you so much for looking, much more to come

Alone and naked he went forward through time and space. A lone droid quiet on the planet of the shapes, where only the sand in the wind moves to a new location, building barriers to life.

All alone and naked.

I've been going thru my old frames, again. It's always fun to flip your old stuff on front and see it completely new way. This is a larger version of the Planet of The Shapes (C-3PO), I did originally about half a year ago. There's also one with the Darth, too, if you're interested more about this kind of stuff.

Although, I like the previous version a lot, I dig this widescreen version a bit more. It's more cinematic. And cinematic is always win-win for me for some reason...

Over the years, I've loved trying to see just how minimalist I can make a shot whilst still making the subject obvious. As one of my longest-running subjects, red foxes are usually the main subject of these 'experiments' and I've fallen in love with their outline. Stunning and, sadly, often misunderstood creatures!

Empire's finest today is also known as the money pit. What I mean is that these large, four-legged walkers seem to need full-time care all the time and it's not cheap thing to do these days, when the world economy is what it is. It would seem that this Snowtrooper is a big task ahead if he is going to get that piece of the foot where it belongs…

This is a continuation to an old shot titled as As the Lights Go Down and The Beauty of Hoth from a year back. Back then I didn't have the skills or the gear to get exactly what I wanted, so I'm returning this subject hopefully with better results. Oh, and everything is all in-camera as usual!

Although they can look heavy and cumbersome on land, grey seals are masters of the water. It's amazing to see how much they have mastered this domain and how quickly they can move about in it.

This shot was taken in the early morning as the sun was just rising. With only patchy rays falling on the water, this curious creature was covered in almost studio-quality lighting!

This is the fourth photo from the Mos Eisley Cantina Lego set, which I got in my hands few weeks ago. It was time for Luke to be photographed as a real skywalker.

The set has a few more character to go. I thought Luke to be a difficult piece to get to appear in the right way, but obviously the most difficult characters are only waiting for me...!

Luke and Han battle with the Snowtroopers. Looks like the dynamic duo put things in order here.

This is an action scene from the series titled as Shades of Gray on White. This particular frame caught up my attention, when I went through the pictures other day. It's a mix of artistic view and LEGO's presented a bit different way. There is no artificial effects used here, i.e. no Ps. All in-camera, as it should be in my book. When I saw this frame first time, I thought Snowtrooper on the right is just too visible and moved on. Later, it started to grow on me, in fact, I started to like how one of the guys is out of the game. I don't know. This is just me talking, but I personally like this very much. It would look very interesting framed on the wall.

“Teton Sunset” I am finally back in the gallery after my epic adventure to the Grand Tetons to teach another fantastic group of students my All-In-Camera, Old-School-Style of photography. What a trip we had with a whole mixed bag of weather. This was supposed to be the worst weather night, I even thought about calling off class for the sunset shift. I am so glad I did not. This goes down as one of the most epic sunsets I have ever witnessed in the Tetons and it was a thrill to be teaching the students how to capture it. It was ever changing light and I could have posted 20 different images of its progression. One of these will certainly end up in the galleries. All I need to do is pick one, Hmmm... Thank you so much for looking

“Back to the big Adventure, Hitting the Big 5”

Back to my 18 day adventure hiking and backpacking Washington’s Big 5 Volcanoes. We did 5 nights around Mt Rainier, and this was one spectacular night! I believe each one of the images stands along as a gallery shot! I loved watching the clouds race across the mountain making each and every shot different and unique, finishing with the moon popping out in just the right place at the right time!. This is one of those nights I will remember always, and every time I look at these images I want to drop everything and head back into the mountains. But for now please excuse my absence from posting as Gracie the Adventure Van and I head back out into the field to teach my Big Adventure on the Central and Southern Oregon Coast. Feels like I have been in the mountains forever this summer, so this will be a real change of pace. And as always, these are shot Old-School Style All-in-Camera. And I would like to clear something up. Many photographer assume because I shoot All-In-Camera, I must be shooting in Jpg. This is not True, as I shoot in Raw, and convert the image in my Cannon DPP4 Software to a big boy Tiff File for printing. In both of my Galleries, the Randall J Hodges Photography Gallery in Edmonds Washington, and my Images of the West Gallery in Cannon Beach Oregon, we make REALLY BIG Prints! The time it takes for me to convert an image to be ready for print from the camera takes less than 60 seconds… This the bonus of being an All-in-Camera shooter, no post processing time, so more time in the field. If you don’t understand how this is possible, come take a class, I will teach it to you also! Thank you so much for looking, and Happy Labor Day weekend everyone!

“Alpenglow in the Dunes”

After suffering through a crazy windstorm the day before, I found the dunes to be wiped clean of footprints and I was able to capture this wide open view in alpenglow. This is kind of one of my secret locations in the dunes that I would bring my students to on the next night. I am booking my Big Adventure in Death Valley Class for 2022, Feb 21-26, the cost is $995 per student with a $500 deposit for the entire 6 days of this spectacular class! Please give me a call 425-210-2506 if you would like more info or to book your spot, and I will trach you to shoot like this, right in the camera! Thank you so much for looking!

The good thing about lockdown limiting my time out in the field was the ability to go through some of my older folders and, finally, edit up some images I missed first time around.

This young cygnet is one such image, taken all-in-camera in 2019 using natural light. One of the great things about swans is how naturally high-key they are and, once you find them on a dark lake, they can create some lovely, moody images.

I'm not quite sure how cygnets came to be known as 'ugly ducklings'. I for one find them to be one of the prettiest of the baby birds!

“Sunset, Sunrise Mono Lake”

Just back in the gallery after teaching my Big Adventure in Death Valley. It was so nice to be in shorts and t-shirts again and experience some nice warm sunshine! I had another great group of students, and I gave them one heck of a tour of Death Valley and the Alabama Hills. They all did a great job learning and using my Old-School, All-In-Camera Techniques. I have a ton of new images to show from this trip, but I decided to show my very last shooting day first. After class, I visited the amazing Eureka Dunes deep in the Death Valley Back County and I have some epic shots to show from that location. Heading out from there we made it to Mono Lake just in time to capture the very best sunset I have ever seen on this unique Lake. The very high salt content of mono Lake creates these strange formations call Tufa’s. I love these fascinating formations and finally on my 5th visit to the area I got the Gallery Shots I have been looking for. That was followed up by an excellent sunrise, then it was a two-day drive to get back home. Lots more to come from this trip, thank you so much for looking!

It's Obi-Wan, legendary Jedi master, mentor of both sides of the Force. This is the fifth minifig (and the photo!) from the new Lego Mos Eisley Cantina set so far.

What a fun object to photograph this was. As soon as I saw this on my computer screen, I knew this was the frame I'm gonna use for this serie!

“A Two Hour Delay”

After teaching my Wallace Falls Class on Monday, I arrived back at Gracie the Cabin, to make my way to Larrabee State Park for sunset. I had plenty of time as I left the parking lot at 1:15. I made it about 10 minutes and was caught up in a backup for a jack knifed truck on Highway 2…Dang it! OK, OK, I can use the time to get ready. So while we were stopped I hopped in the back and made my lunch…then we moved… then it ate it…then we moved... then I packed up my pack…then we moved…Then I put on my boots…then we moved…and so on…two hours later I started to drive out of it…Dang it, it was after three. I drove as fast as I could without a ticket and made up some time, then just as I get to Chuckanut drive, I get behind the slowest driver ever!!! Dang it! ...Man…please…go faster…I can see the sun very low in the sky…Please go faster… This guys is doing 20 miles an hour in a 35 zone…Come on go faster…Dang it! I am going to miss sunset!….Please go faster….Now he has 20 cars behind him….please go faster….Finally he pulls over….Go….Go….Go…Finally I pull into the campground, pull Gracie up on her ramps, grab my pack and we are off jogging with the packs…Go Faster….We got to Hurry…Go faster….Finally we make it, drop the packs, set up the cameras and shoot….shoot….shoot, and then it was over. Holy Cow! What would have normally been an hour in a half drive turned into almost 4 hours, and I got there just in the nick of time to get this shot! Sunset in the San Juan’s from Larrabee State Park…Put that in the Bank!!! And that is what it is like sometimes, being a professional nature photographer! Now take a breath and go for a 6 mile night hike to de-stress…Thank you so much for looking
