he's the one I worry about most. His asthma has landed us in the nighttime peds office for the last 3 years in September. Last year was the worst. He couldn't even walk or talk. Now he's off milk, on allergy meds and fish oil. The allergist wanted him on 4 meds/day plus allergy shots. Thank God for our ped who is helping us get a grasp on this holistically and nutritionally, w/o the meds w/ awful side effects. Dealing with all that has made him a worrier, which makes me worry.
Knock on wood, he seems to be better this year. I hope it continues.
I was tagged by photos and tea (photos and tea's Photostream) last week and somehow missed it. So here are 10 things about me that you may not know:
1. This picture is of a shop window that is called the Chocolate Lab--that isn't what you don't know about me. Here it is: I don't like chocolate. I will eat it if I have to, but rarely ever get hungry for it and certainly don't crave it.
2. If you give me gummy candy, I will be your friend forever.
3. I am an only child, but I am not spoiled and love to share.
4. I always thought that I would marry a man who is taller and older than me, but my wonderful Mister is younger and shorter.
5. I have a short attention span....or maybe a fear of being really good at something....or maybe I am just lazy. I can play just about all woodwind instruments and own 6 different ones, but am not really good at any of them. As soon as I start getting good at one, I stop practicing or start learning a new one.
6. I would much rather sit around and read all day than ever do any kind of exercise.
7. My grandparents live in a place called Bobtown. Nobody knows who Bob was.
8. I am allergic to raw carrots. I used to eat them until my fingers turned orange when I was a kid and when I got to college, developed an allergy to them....my throat gets itchy, my gums get swollen and red....so I just don't eat them anymore, but miss them terribly. The allergist told me to just try eating one every now and then, but I am scared to.
9. My parents lived in Brazil for 2 years--it is an amazing country.
10. I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up.
So I guess I have to tag 10 people...Here they are:

Ok so the weather is not as it should be here this time of year. Spring is here though and that means major allergies for Connor. Poor dude has been hacking up a lung lately. Took him to the allergist yesterday and they had to give him an emergency treatment in the office because he was so bad....
Day #2 of probably staying home from school. Extra neb treatments and prednisone. Then some weirdo inhaler thing that is like a powder that you inhale. Seriously, that can't be real good.....
Anyway - where is the warmer weather? We need to break through this pollen crap!
This is Seth. Or SethTron. He adds Tron to everyone's name and suprisingly, it isn't annoying.
I'm AnnTron and very fond of it. Although, I'll still answer to Pistol.
The spool on the left (his right) indicates the amount of DVDs I watched to write my last script. The spool on the right (his left) indicates the amount of DVDs I need to watch for my next script. Seth's spool is the same size as mine.
I immediately went for a massage after lugging the spool to my car.
Seth will be doing the same today.
And, yes, he is a giant.
And, yes, our office looks like an allergist's waiting room.

Lately I have been seeing a lot of these guys.
Turns out that may be a good thing for me. Three weeks ago my allergist diagnosed me with a sun allergy - or polymorphous light eruption. To avoid symptoms I am supposed to either stay out of the sun as much as possible or use a sun screen with a factor of 50+. Since my symptoms haven't really improved in the last few weeks despite me hardly spending any time outside (it was raining anyway) we'll see how that goes. Right now I am doing what I usually do - pretend it's nothing and hope for the best.
Some have been asking, and hear's the answer. I've been doing very little photography this spring and summer after experiencing chronic recurring conjunctivitis since March. Latest episode lasting from June 1st thru July 8th. Many Drs.' visits with many "try this" treatment suggestions to no avail. I had asked that a sample for the lab be taken at each of my appts. to help with diagnosis - with each new appt. and Dr. - Primary Dr., Allergist, and Ophthalmologists. Apparently, that's not the "protocol" these days which probably means insurance doesn't pay for it. But it does mean more expense and aggravation for patients. It was also strange to learn that my regular Ophthalmologist doesn't see patients for conjunctivitis, and I had to find another one that would. Thankful to have had a WHOLE week - free from symptoms. Fingers crossed!! Now to check out your photostreams.

Valerie Harper was an American Emmy Award actress best known for her television role as the feisty Rhoda Morgenstern and best friend of Mary Richards on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Who didn’t love Rhoda? In 2001 I got a phone call from my good friend, writer Catherine Whitney. She was working on a new project, co-writing a book with Harper. It needed illustrations and she wanted to know if I was interested. The book was called, “Today I Am a Ma’am: And Other Musing on Life, Beauty, and Growing Older.” I remember my first response was, “I don’t know if I am woman enough to do the drawings.” So I offered to do one illustration and see if Valerie liked it and we’d go from there. She liked what I did! The project turned into one of the best jobs I ever had. How could it not? I was working for Rhoda! The book was charming and funny and each illustration just worked. As an illustrator you can’t ask for more. Catherine told me, at one point during the job, that Valerie was loving what I was doing. One evening my wife, Brenda, and I came home and there was a message on the answering machine. It was Valerie!! I still get caught up in celebrity. Valerie Harper is leaving a message on our machine!?! Eventually we did speak and it was like I was talking to an old friend. The climax came soon after the project was over. We were in New York City and Catherine got us tickets for Valerie’s show on Broadway, “The Tale of the Allergist’s Wife.” After the show we met Valerie in her dressing room. She was as wonderful as I expected she’d be. At one point she got a phone call from her husband, Tony. The first thing she said to him was, “Tony, you’ll never guess who is sitting here in my dressing room!” I just looked around and said, “Who? Who?” We left the theatre with Valerie. I’ve been on the side of autograph seekers waiting for the celebrity to exit. I had never been on the side of the celebrity exiting the theatre. That was pretty cool. Valerie was a joy. I was a big fan of hers since the first time I met her on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Years later, working for her and meeting her. Excellent!

Summit Shah The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to know and avoid foods that cause signs and symptoms. Usually, the first reaction to a food allergen occurs when you eat that particular food. Sometimes, exposure can occur without your knowledge, such as when a food allergen is a small part of a larger meal or a mixture of different foods. This is especially true in restaurants and in other social settings. It is the first exposures that prime the immune system to the food. Summit Shah is your trusted allergist in Columbus, Ohio that will help you learn everything about an allergy. There are no drugs or treatments available that prevent food allergies. I am supposed to go to Birmingham on Wednesday for a week to see my sister and her family, and my 91 year old mom who is in a nursing home and suffers from dementia. Won't exactly be on the road, but more like on the airplane to Chicago, and then Birmingham. The problem is that I developed this horrible rash with blisters on it last Tuesday, and it's on my left side bum area, which makes it hard to sit. I went to the dermatologist on Friday, and found out it is shingles, which apparently lays dormant in your system once you've had chicken pox. The derm said that stress can weaken your immune system and once that happens, latent things can step forward. Along with the blisters are my swollen lymph nodes which feel like a narble beneath the skin and throb and hurt.
Okay, this is going to be another illness paragraph, and I am writing it to see if anyone understands what may be going on with me because perhaps you have experienced it yourself. For the last six months, my body has been super stressed out as I have been experiencing extreme body heat, and I'm thinking this is what may have brought on the shingles. It's mostly in my upper body, and I get so hot that I don't even take hot baths or showers anymore because it makes me feel even hotter and really sick. I have stopped eating meat because it makes me feel too hot, and I have been consulting a Chinese website that lists warm, cooling and neutral foods, and I am eating a lot of cooling foods like avocados and cucumbers and sesame oil. (Who knew sesame oil was cooling??) If I eat a warming food, I really feel uncomfortable, like there are burners beneath my skin and they are on medium heat. Ok, so this is not menopause because I've been there and done that, and this is more intense that that anyway...
I have been to an allergist, a naturopath, an endocrinologist, my primary care physician, a dermatologist, and no one can figure out what's causing this. Oh, and acupuncture and even it doesn't help. So I guess I am writing this in the hopes that maybe one of you, perhaps, can shed some light on this, albeit cooling light!
Thanks for listening!! I realize this might just also be one of those freaky things that burns itself out and moves on. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!
Hope you are all feeling healthy!!! And big hug!!

Waiting around in the office after my allergy shot. There is one other lady in the waiting room with me.
Thought process, "This book is boring."
"I wonder if she'll think I'm strange if I bust out my camera and start taking photos of my legs."
"Then again, I am wearing red and gray striped socks and boots."
"Hell, what do I care .. she just talked to herself .. out loud."
I'm knitting my first pair of socks (also my first time knitting with double-pointed needles) with KnitPicks Felici Self-striping yarn. I got a good deal on 3 balls of it from someone in a craft forum, so I think I am going to make knee-high socks. A few veteran knitters have yelled at me about picking a complicated pattern as my first pair of socks...Mel says I should have done a basic pattern (with needles bigger than the insanely small size 1 I'm using), and if I had, I'd be done with both socks by now. Instead, I have this much done of ONE sock.
To be honest, this pattern didn't seem that complicated, but because it's not just knitting or ribbing, it is taking longer, and I'm not really slaving away at it; I only work on it waiting at the allergist or when I sit and knit with Mel. I like it so far, and can only hope I continue to feel this way about it so that I will have the will-power to make a second one. :)
The house dust mite (sometimes referred to by allergists as HDM) is a cosmopolitan guest in human habitation. Dust mites feed on organic detritus such as flakes of shed human skin and flourish in the stable environment of dwellings. House dust mites are a common cause of asthma and allergic symptoms worldwide. The mite's gut contains potent digestive enzymes (notably proteases) that persist in their feces and are major inducers of allergic reactions such as wheezing. The mite's exoskeleton can also contribute to allergic reactions. The European house dust mite (Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus) and the American house dust mite (Dermatophagoides farinae) are two different species, but are not necessarily confined to Europe or North America; a third species Euroglyphus maynei also occurs widely.
Summit Shah Primary immunodeficiency diseases (PI) are a group of more than 300 rare, chronic disorders in which part of the body's immune system is missing or functions improperly. Some primary immunodeficiencies are more commonly associated with allergic issues. Allergic diseases and symptoms occur because of an active immune system that reacts to things that are usually harmless, such as pollens, pet dander or foods. Because primary immune disorders are caused by genetic defects, there's no way to prevent them. But when you or your child has a weakened immune system, you can take steps to prevent infections. Summit Shah of Premier Allergy can help you in preventing your allergic reaction. Prevention is better than cure. Feel free to call us at (614) 401-2397. Premier Allergy Reviews Allergies are the result of a chain reaction that starts in the immune system. Your immune system controls how your body defends itself. Your immune system overreacts by producing antibodies called Immunoglobulin E (IgE). These antibodies travel to cells that release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction. Give up? Gas line mark out. The other stuff's been that way for years here (infrastructure collapse). The ground settled a little. I guess no one noticed before now. A lot of yellow paint.s being sprayed around Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA lately.
One of the many projects going up quickly in the area is on Tucker Station Road - currently being built by a company called Citiscape Residential out of Indianapolis, Indiana. One of the site superintendents was so kind as to give Pancake and me a quick tour of the site, indicating they were funded by the Carlyle Group, purported to be one of the largest investment firms in the USA and elsewhere. The site super said they simply followed orders to get this complex up fast, I will give them credit for that. Units are being sold. It is a busy place. Most places if done right will get the surrounding infrastructures in place (roadways, traffic flow, etc...) prior to building these pizza box dog kennels. What this 300 unit subdevelopment and dozens of others do is wreak having on the current population with any type of immunocompromised system (infants, children, the aged, disabled, etc...) or those with eyes without cataracts as these conditions could be prevented with knowledge and integrity of those who'd approved and constructed them. It does guarantee current eye doctors, lawyers, dermatologists, heart doctors, lung doctors and allergists their job security. He did say the MSD inspectors do get out of their vehicles on occasion. The fast completion of these buildings at the expense of the local people, animals and environment is nothing to be proud of. www.carlyle.com/sites/default/files/documents/CarbonNeutr...
February 29 is making a return after a four year hiatus, marking 2016 as a Leap Year. February 29 is also Rare Disease Day. I had all but forgotten 2016 was Leap Year and knew little about Rare Disease Day (www.rarediseaseday.org/) until I sat down with Vicki Kipreos, NCBDDD’s Management Officer, where she shared her experiences living with Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CVID) - a rare form of primary immunodeficiency.
The National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (www.cdc.gov/ncbddd) works to explore conditions impacting some of the nation’s most vulnerable populations, including work with less common conditions and diseases. But due to limited funding and research in the area, there is little known about CVID.
Common Variable Immune Deficiency (CIVD) is a genetic mutation of B cells causing the body to stop making antibodies and subsequently the body is unable to fight infection. For many years Vicki fought pneumonia, asthma, and other breathing problems. She suffered through bronchitis, ear infections, strep throat, and other debilitating illnesses. During these times her physicians never looked for the root cause of her illnesses, they would only treated the symptoms. It was in 2009, when Vicki had a severe bout of pneumonia that hospitalized her for several weeks that the outlook of her condition changed. Treatment included heavy ineffective steroids, but still nothing to address the root cause. During one of three more hospitalizations that summer, a physician recommended she have a full allergy test performed by an allergist. The allergist, who also happened to be an immunologist, learned very quickly from her tests that she had CVID and he explained to her that her body has stopped making antibodies to fight infection.
Relieved to have finally found the root cause of her ongoing illnesses, Vicki’s physicians quickly identified appropriate treatment. While there is no cure for CVID, treatment includes a regimen of immunoglobulin infusions which Vicki is able to perform regularly in the comfort of her home. While demanding, Vicki is happy to have the treatment that now enables her to live a normal life. But Vicki has never let her condition keep her from the activities she enjoys and loves. A mother of two adult sons, she continues to live a full energized life. She’s active in her church, works full time, enjoys crocheting for family and friends, and loves to attend concerts with her husband! In addition, she serves as a liaison with the Immune Deficiency Foundation (IDF) (primaryimmune.org/), a non-profit dedicated to improving the improving the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life of persons with primary immunodeficiency. She uses her voice to raise awareness around the signs and symptoms of CVID, and she often speaks with physicians about the condition, leaving behind educational materials/pamphlets for their offices that serve to educate patients and the medical professionals within the practice.
Vicki enjoys sharing her story and educating the public and hopes to continue doing her part to raise awareness. She is currently busy planning Atlanta’s inaugural 2016 IDF Walk for Primary Immunodeficiency (PI) with the goal of furthering the understanding of PI and raising funds for research and education.
Just as Leap Year is an occasion rare enough to make us take notice when it returns, many diseases considered rare, impact the lives of those around us. Their strength in dealing with those sometimes invisible battles is an example to all.
