More often than not, my morning trip through the newspaper leaves me frustrated and angry. People can just be such dumbasses, you know?
So imagine how thrilled I was this morning to find... not one but TWO sane, common sense ideas getting some time in the public eye.
First was a column about polygamy. We have this polygamist community in BC and people have been tearing their hair out about it (selectively) for decades. Finally today... for the first time in print... I see that someone shares my opinion. That polygamy... in and of itself... is about arrangements among consenting adults and should not be legally prohibited. And that... if people are concerned about the sexual abuse of girls within the sect... well then, they should get on investigating child welfare concerns and leave the issue of plural marriage by adults the heck out of it.
Next I was treated to a (FINALLY!) sane discussion about prostitution. Some long-time local advocates for working women's rights are planning to open a brothel - and I'm right here, cheering them on. When the interviewer raised concerns about violence, the project proponent wisely pointed out that sex and violence (just like polygamy and child abuse) are separate issues. She said, "The only reason there's a problem with violence in the sex trade is because it's been allowed. Because we just don't want to see it, period. There would be a problem with violence in the banking industry, too," she said, "if anyone who cared to could just punch a teller in the face and walk away without consequences. Sex is not inherently violent," she pointed out, "any more than banking is."
She also pointed out that the guys who buy sex from hookers are, by and large, "average" guys. So why shouldn't the women (and men) who serve them be afforded the same basic workplace rights as your average guy?
Ahhh... it's all so sane and common sensical that it boggles the mind. Now if we could just get past those archaic superstitions about marijuana...
almost kinda like empty your pockets.... pretty much what i have or carry everyday.
