2018-06-30 ANGELA DAVIS JOHNSON who BLU BLAK at MINT Atlanta
MINT is pleased to present Leap Year Exhibition BLU BLAK: Angela Davis Johnson presents renderings and Hollerin sketches, or Blue Holes | scraps from the archive, a collection of works opening June 30th and on view through July 28th.
this exhibition is an archived collection of almanac entries, myth making, portraiture & arranged objects pulled from the Blue Hole. BLU BLAK looks at the surfaces & meanings of things lost and discovered in the diaspora. It examines the use of myths as both weapon and shield.
OPENING RECEPTION
Join MINT for an opening reception on Saturday, June 30 from 7-10pm at our gallery, 92 Peachtree St SW, Atlanta 30303.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Angela Davis Johnson creates paintings, public art installations, and ritual performances to examine and archive the technologies of black people, in particular black women/femme. She merges art into a contemplative practice to generate works that bring personal and communal visioning around ending poverty, displacement, and state sanctioned violence. Davis Johnson incorporates body movement and sound alongside her vibrant narrative paintings which consist of portraits created with paint, scrap paper, found objects, and fabric. She co-created Hollerin Space, an ongoing community engaged art work with collaborator artist Muthi Reed. She has created works for Mississippi Museum of Art, Elevate ATL, and recently selected as a MINT Leap Year fellow. In 2015, Davis Johnson was selected as an Alternate Roots Visual Arts Scholar for her art and advocacy. She has been nominated twice for Joan Mitchell Foundation Emerging Artist Fellowship and Painters/Sculpture grant. Davis Johnson, mother of two, is based in Atlanta, GA.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
The notion of negative and positive always keep us trapped in the prison of the binary….if we tell stories that have to do with trauma, painful hard moments that have happened to us what can we do in the rendering of that story that also shows us what elements are used to survive? bell hooks
Blue holes are where black memories are hidden and housed. I first learned of physical blue holes through my uncle who told tall tales of bottomless water sources that swallowed coca cola trucks and little children whole. I imagine Blue Holes as interconnected water portals that our ancestors escaped within during the transatlantic middle passage to find their kinfolk in the shadowy land of chattel slavery. Blue Holes are the spaces Zora Neal Hurston traveled in her anthropological studies of the Caribbean balmyards. Blue Holes are where my great grandmother, a healer and midwife, stored her medicinal blue baths. Blue Holes are where the post reconstruction Atlanta black laundresses placed their organizing strategies. Blue Holes are access points to examine the political reshaping of Black identity. Blue Holes are where the myths created to invisibilize black folx who may be missing, brutalized, and/or criminalized are disrupted and analyzed. By no means are Blue Holes rare but are seldom recognized as such. Blue Holes are corner stores ciphering. Blue Holes are House of Black Infinity*. Blue Holes are the inner rhythm of trap music and spirituals and Alice Coltrane. Blue Holes are Hollerin Spaces**.
Ultimately, I believe evidence of the Blue Hole world exist in the body. Human bodies are geographies and landscapes of past lives, histories, and truths. I believe the lines in the face, like maps reveal the pathways to land forgotten. In creation of this work curated sessions for and with black folx (in particular black women) were held. These sessions centered on motherhood, parenting, consent, and deep presence to combat erasure, generational labor, and the power of Black imagination formed the archive of portraits, objects, and renderings.

*House of Black Infinity is the energy space between an individual’s daily lived life and the mass collective lineages/legacies/mythologies defining the Black experience.
**Hollerin Space is about establishing and maintaining an oracle in time space body ether. Timeless and ancient. We make work that speaks across Black geographies. Woman centered work. Revival and putting down work. Tell you what a woman knows and how deep she know dem. Dey/dem centered work. We embodied. Of protein, birth, death, joy, revolution, style, vibration. Ritual. We keep stories. We perform the dream.

Custom made with a mix of skins and programs, including a variety of rainmeter skins and a little bit of resource hacking.
Changed start button to match the Orange/Black theme of the desktop, modded skins to match desktop, and with a little bit of explorer.exe modding, changed the look of the explorer pages.
Happy with the complete results, and aside from a few touchups on the task bar and making a new icon for system monitoring, I think I'm finally completed.
