Macro Mondays theme: "One of These Thing is NOT like The Others"

Every once in a while something changes

And she's changing me

It's too late for me now, I am altered

There is something beneath

She's not acid nor alkaline

Caught between black and white

Not quite either day or night

She's perfectly misaligned

I'm caught up in her design

And how it connects to mine

I see in a different light

The object of my desire

Ooh, let's talk about chemistry

'Cause I'm dying to melt through

To the heart of her molecules

'Til the particles part like holy water

If anything

She's an undiscovered element

Either born in hell or heaven-sent

Either way I'm into it

There are few places in California—and maybe on the planet—that can make you think you might just be on Mars. Mono Lake Tufa State National Preserve is one of them. At this high-desert preserve, on the eastern side of the towering Sierra, ghostlike tufa towers trim the edges of a one-million-year-old lake, the salty remnant of an ancient inland sea. Over a million sea birds feed on the surface and swirl overhead—an incredible show of life in this seemingly desolate setting.

Tufa towers are columns of calcium carbonate which form in carbonate-rich saltwater lakes (soda lakes). Underneath the lake, underwater springs pump calcium-saturated water through the lake bed.

When the spring water meets the alkaline lake water, calcium and carbonate salts react to form insoluble calcium carbonate (limestone), which precipitates out, settling in mineral deposits around the spring.

Over centuries these deposits gradually grow into towering columns which can reach heights of up to nine meters (30 feet). Tufa can only form underwater, so it is only if lakes are drained or dry out over many years that the towers are exposed.

My son Seth is in the photo for scale.

The Alkaline Ponds are interesting bodies of water east of Mammoth Lakes, California. At our previous workshop we spent a morning and evening here. This view is as we left our vehicles and walked down the depression to one of the ponds.

Mono Lake, nestled in California's eastern Sierra Nevada, is renowned for its extraordinary saline environment, dramatic tufa towers, and the incredibly productive ecosystem it sustains.

This highly alkaline lake provides a unique habitat for brine shrimp and alkali flies, which in turn support millions of migratory birds.

The striking tufa towers, formed by mineral deposits, stand as iconic, otherworldly sentinels around its shores.

Even in the frigid winter, Mono Lake remarkably remains unfrozen, a testament to its high salt concentrations.

Adding to its geological intrigue, the Mono Lake volcanic field, with vents on its northern shore and on Paoha and Negit Islands, was last active mere centuries ago.

SALDA LAKE

Lake Salda is a mid-size crater lake[citation needed] in southwestern Turkey, within the boundaries of Yeşilova district of Burdur Province. It lies at a distance of about fifty kilometers to the west from the province seat Burdur.

Lake Salda is often included in the Turkish Lakes Region that extends across inner western to southern Anatolia, especially Isparta Province and Afyonkarahisar Province, although Lake Salda is geographically separate from the larger lakes, which are more to the east and, being a crater lake, is morphologically different from these tectonic lakes.

The lake area covers 4,370 hectares, and its depth reaches 196 meters, making it one of the deeper lakes in Turkey, if not the deepest. The lake sedimentary records show high resolution climate changes that are related to solar variability during the last millennium.

The lake is a popular excursion spot for people across the region or from beyond, the more so due to the hydromagnesite mineral found in its coastal waters, which is believed to offer remedies for certain dermatological diseases. The shorelines, surrounded by black pine forests, are also popular among hunters, the game and the fowl available including quails, hares, foxes, boars and wild ducks, aside from the lake's fish. White sandy beaches, limpid water and seven crystal-white islets within the lake complete the scenery.

A township that starts almost at the shore to the southwest of the lake carries the same name, Salda. The local administrative seat of Yeşilova is located to the east of the lake at a distance of about four kilometers and Yeşilova municipality manages the lake's camping facilities.

Its peculiar morphology has led to a number of academic studies conducted on Lake Salda. The unusual alkaline nature of the lake means that is one of the few locations where ancient stromatolite algae still grows.

In 2019, a team of planetary scientists from America and Turkey conducted research on Lake Salda's shoreline microbialite sediments. In March 2021, NASA reported that its Mars surface-exploring rover Perseverance showed that "the minerals and rock deposits at Salda are the nearest match on earth to those around the Jezero Crater where the spacecraft landed."

Hoping to protect the Lake Salda area, the nation's environmental authority has launched a huge national park project. The Salda Lake National Park is currently under construction and should be finished in 2023.(Wiki)

Salty bushes and tufa after sunset.

Mono Lake is known for its tufa calcium carbonate rock formations that form underwater where springs bring calcium-rich water to the alkaline lake. In the fall the winds are less at Mono Lake, so sunsets tend to get calm. The alkaline waters of the lake are nearly 3X saltier then the ocean.

With landscape elements like this - blue water, white alkaline deposits - and warm morning light, any bird would look great. That most of the birds present were American Avocets put it over the top for me, and I ended up working this relatively small area for a couple of hours (with one 15-minute break in the car to warm up, as the morning was much colder than it looks).

This pond is part of a larger wetland area along the margins of Chaplin Lake, which forms critical habitat for migratory birds. The saline waters produce huge numbers of brine shrimp, which in turn feed countless shorebirds, waterfowl, gulls, and other migratory species en route to their breeding grounds.

These avocets were easy to photograph, as they quickly accepted my presence while I alternately sat and lay flat in a not-too-damp spot near the shore. Part of success in wildlife photography - or any photography - is recognizing when you're onto something good. This may seem obvious, but it isn't always so. For years I watched my students misjudge a situation and spend too much time in an unproductive location or walk away from some fantastic light because they didn't see its potential. There is no substitute for experience, but sometimes a little nudge or hint from a good instructor can serve as a useful guideline.

The other side of that - and the difficulty in teaching any of the visual arts - lies in not wanting to interfere with real creativity. It's good to experiment with unpromising materials, and it's good to fail, because that's how we learn. Years ago, someone asked me, "How do you teach photography? CAN you teach photography?" My answer was, "I don't know." I can certainly teach exposure and depth of field and how to behave around wildlife and being aware of the light. The creative part? That is our personal journey. We do that part alone.

"Can I be honest?

I'm getting scared of fading out

Hearing the whispers

They say I'm old news now

All that I've wanted

Is being ripped right out my mouth

Can I be honest? Can I be honest with you?

Is there composure in the pain?

Can I ever find my peace?

Will I ever balance me?

Took the shot without the aim

Hoping I would feel something

Will I ever balance me?

They swore that I'd be fine

But nothing feels right

They swore that I'd be fine

There goes my alkaline

They swore that I'd be fine

But nothing feels right

They swore that I'd be fine

There goes my alkaline

Will you be honest? Am I just inside my head?

Know that I panic, 'cause I'm scared of losing this

Do I sound crazy? Losing faith on accident

Will you be honest? Can you be honest with me?

Is there composure in the pain?

Can I ever find my peace?

Will I ever balance me?

Took the shot without the aim

Hoping I would feel something

Will I ever balance me?

I know that

They said it

They lied and I bought it

They swore that I'd be fine

But nothing feels right

They swore that I'd be fine

There goes my alkaline

Swear that I have been trying to change

Balance got the best of me

Vertigo inside my brain

Dizzy, trying to find some peace

Emotions got the best of me

This alkaline's become my pain

They swore that I'd be fine

But nothing feels right

They swore that I'd be fine

There goes my alkaline

(Swear that I have been trying to change)

(Balance got the best of me)

(Vertigo inside my brain)

(Dizzy, trying to find some peace)

(Emotions got the best of me)

(This alkaline's become my pain)

I know that

They said it

They lied and I bought it"

Tso Moriri or Lake Moriri Tibetan: ལྷ་མོའི་བླ་མཚོ, Wylie: lha mo bla mtsho) or "Mountain Lake", is a lake in the Ladakhi part of the Changthang Plateau (literally: northern plains) in Jammu and Kashmir in northern India. The official name of the land and water reserve here is the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve.

The lake is at an altitude of 4,522 m (14,836 ft). It is the largest of the high altitude lakes entirely within India and entirely within Ladakh in this Trans-Himalayan biogeographic region. It is about 16 miles (26 km) north to south in length and two to three miles (3 to 5 km) wide. The lake has no outlet at present and the water is brackish though not very perceptible to taste.

The lake is fed by springs and snow-melt from neighboring mountains. Most water enters the lake in two major stream systems, one entering the lake from the north, the other from the southwest. Both stream systems include extensive marshes where they enter the lake. It formerly had an outlet to the south, but this has become blocked and the lake has become a endorheic lake. The lake is oligotrophic in nature, and its waters are alkaline.

Accessibility to the lake is largely limited to summer season, though Karzok on the northwest shore and the military facilities on the eastern shores have year-round habitation.

The red cabbage (purple-leaved varieties of Brassica Oleracea Capitata Group) is a kind of cabbage, also known as Blaukraut after preparation.

Its leaves are coloured dark red/purple.

However, the plant changes its colour according to the pH value of the soil due to a pigment belonging to anthocyanins.

In acidic soils, the leaves grow more reddish; in neutral soils, they will grow more purple, while an alkaline soil will produce rather greenish-yellow coloured cabbages.

This explains the fact that the same plant is known by different colours in various regions.

It can be found in all of Europe, throughout the Americas, in China, and especially in Africa.

NUTRITION: Cooked red cabbage is 91% water, 7% carbohydrates, 1% protein, and contains negligible fat (table). It has a high content of vitamin C and vitamin K, containing 44% and 72%, respectively, of the Daily Value (DV) per 100-gram amount, and is a moderate source of vitamin B6 (17% DV).

CULINARY: Red cabbage is often used raw for salads and coleslaw.

This vegetable can be eaten cooked as well.

It is the traditional accompanying side dish paired with many German meals, notably meat dishes like Sauerbraten or Döner.

At Christmas, it can be spiced, braised, and served as an accompaniment to seasonal roast goose or turkey. Apples and a little vinegar are often added to give it a sweet and sour taste. (Source: Wikipedia).

BRASSICA OLERACEA, 2025

(Fuente: Wikipedia).

Greater flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus), male and female

These famous pink birds can be found in warm, watery regions on many continents, from West Africa eastward throughout the Mediterranean to South West and South Asia, and throughout sub-Saharan Africa.. They favor environments like estuaries and saline or alkaline lakes. Considering their appearance, flamingos are surprisingly fluid swimmers, but really thrive on the extensive mud flats where they breed and feed.

Greater flamingos are likely to be the only tall, pink bird in any given locale. They also have long, lean, curved necks and black-tipped bills with a distinctive downward bend.

Their bent bills allow them to feed on small organisms—plankton, tiny fish, fly larvae, and the like. In muddy flats or shallow water, they use their long legs and webbed feet to stir up the bottom. They then bury their bills, or even their entire heads, and suck up both mud and water to access the tasty morsels within. A flamingo's beak has a filter-like structure to remove food from the water before the liquid is expelled.

Shrimp-like crustaceans are responsible for the flamingo's pink color. The birds pale in captivity unless their diet is supplemented.

Greater flamingos live and feed in groups called flocks or colonies. They find safety in numbers, which helps to protect individual birds from predators while their heads are down in the mud. Greater flamingos also breed while gathered in groups. Once mating is complete, a pair takes turns incubating their single egg. Young flamingos are born gray and white and do not turn pink for two years. In years when wetlands and pools are dry and food scarce, flamingos may not breed.

The colony works together to protect each other from predators and to take care of the young. It is believed that flamingos are monogamous, according to Sea World. Once they mate, they tend to stay with that mate. A group of flamingos will all mate at the same time so that all of the chicks will hatch at the same time.

As an experiment we tried to grow a broccoli plant over the winter, and this was the result - one sad little floret. I'm guessing it did not like our soil, which is a bit alkaline for many plants. So not the perfect crop for here.
