Test image for the workshop. Three 'A''s generated in Processing with varying contour widths. From this we printed with different colours on a white and black T-Shirt to get an idea of the results. One of the main limitations of silkscreen printing is of course colour but also line width and therefore overall definition of the drawing.

1988. Extracted from the Intellectual Capital Mines in Switzerland. On the way to the Raw Knowledge Distillery.

Our son Adam Florin gave a fascinating talk about generative music at Algorithmic Art Assembly, hosted by Gray Area Art + Technology. He started with a quick demo of Patter, his music composition software, then took us on an illuminating journey through the many people and ideas which inspired him to create his cool freeform generative sequencer.

Brian Eno, who coined the phrase “generative music”, recently likened it to gardening -- but the material practice is just as much rooted in centuries of formal aesthetics, predictive statistics and industrial automation. How can we negotiate the tension between organic and and the mechanical in the algorithmic arts?

Adam has created some amazing digital tools and art exhibits in that space. It was great to hear what he's learned in this fascinating field, exploring the intersection of human and machine creativity. And to top it off, he gave this talk on his birthday, which was the best present of all!

This project is part of the Ars Electronica Garden Hongkong.

The exhibition is an effort to move beyond the focus upon perceptual experience alone in most media art shows. Instead, we want to “open the black box” – to reveal what is not seen. The assumptions behind the exhibition are that what makes media art interesting is the process of mediation, that is, the machine processes that lie between the maker’s deliberation and what we perceive and experience; and that knowledge of these processes enhances our appreciation and understanding of machine-made art. Algorithmic Art is a parallel event to Art Machines: International Symposium on Computational Media Art, 4-7 January 2019, at the School of Creative Media.

Algorithm trading, the new trading tool.

Two passes of a sorting algorithm (Quicksort) that randomly exits before sorting is complete, applied to single rows of pixels. Components compared in GBR order. Processing code is here.

8192 triangles are drawn in 3 dimensional space and used to approximate a source image. An algorithm refines the colors and positions of the vertices until the image converges on the target.

Manually executed algorithmic procedure: using a simple L-system to generate a tree structure, I drew the tree structures as nested rectangles and then pruned certain "branches." The code was run in my head, so to speak, but that was part of the process of moving it over to Processing.

«The International Exhibition of ceramics and glasses in landscape», Saint-Petersburg, 2009

Height: 1,80 m

This project is part of the Ars Electronica Garden Daejeon.

2020 Daejeon Biennale brings together works that harness advanced AI technologies in pursuit of an expanded field of artistic expression. A range of displayed works, in which elements of art and science exist in fusion, will present multidisciplinary approaches to AI, as they take their sources from various fields such as literature, cinema, data science, etc. Simultaneously, the body of work will be a reminder of both the functions and malfunctions of deep-learning algorithms, examining the double-edged sword of AI technologies.
